***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

== ACE PILOT GROUP BUILD (FINAL WEEK) ==

Starting September 1st, you have two months to build, customize, and paint a mobile suit of your choice into your own personal design. This can range from just a repainted Zaku to a kitbashed Gundam loaded with any spare rifles and Rocket Launchers you can find. Any suit from any series is fair game, just stick to 1/144 kits and you're good. When you're done feel free to post it in the thread, but also send pics to [email protected] so that all the entries can be judged/posted at once when the group build is over (If you don't want to be judged for the contest just feel free to mention it when you send in your pics).

Prizes include:
>1st Place: Any HG kit under $25 + an Action Base 2
>2nd Place: Any HG kit under $15
>3rd Place: An Action Base 2
(Note: Shipping is to USA and Canada only)

Group build ends on November 7th, lets gunpla!

I was about to mock you for accidentally posting a picture of the box instead of the kit, then I actually looked at it.

How's the articulation in the legs? Since it's got no ankles it seems like you wouldn't be able to get much in the way of posing out of them.
>>
>>14907011
I hope I at least place in this damn thing.

The knee and hip joints actually have a very wide range of motion, but sadly the weird ankles only provide a few degrees of pivot back and forth and almost no movement from side to side, they also lack the typical front the back sliding motion of other kits due to the joint construction. The big knee guards also fold over and bump up against the front and side skirts when the leg is bet and raised high angles

The arms also have a fantastic degree of flexibility , thanks to double jointed elbows and unobstructed shoulder pads, the only issue here is the small forearm protrusions that cover the hands, which block movement.

The head, obviously, also lacks any significant range of motion because of its size and neck cowling, but the torso has a huge range of motion to make up for it. Overall its a pretty good figure, 7/10 (would be 8/10 of not for the feet, ground type when)

Especially the Grazes
>>
>>14907238

Pretty much everything that isn't the Gusions is good.
>>
>>14907260

Gusion is fine.
Gusion Rebake and Rebake Full Shitty are full shitty.

I have the Gusion fully built, and a 1/100 Graze on backlog. I just got my little brother into the hobby and he completed his first kit, the GH Barbatos Luspus, so I can got a quick review on that. Cant tell you about the Graze models, but I hear very good things about all of them, likely 10/10 model.

I'll be purchasing more high grade IBO kits in the near future, with the Astaroth O being most likely my next purchase. I'll post figure run downs as the come, for those who are interested

Thanks for the info. Do the arms get more than a 90 degree bend? It looks like the thick forearms would block that.

>>14907238
I've got the 1/100 Graze Kai and Grimgerde and the HG Barbatos Lupus. Lupus might be my favourite HG, it's a stellar kit that nails the proportions and has great shelf presence. I only wish the hip binders looked better. The 1/100s are both great, especially the Graze. You get pretty much everything needed t make the vanilla Graze besides the backpack. Grimgerde has balance issues but does fine on a stand.

The Rebakes are stickeriffic, the stickers look like shit, and even with all the stickers they missed out on very basic things where they could have used a sticker or molded it in 2 colors so you have to paint anyway.
>>
>>14907373
>>14907377

The stickers really are a shame, I have a lot of hope that the 1/100 Full City is a massive improvement over the HG. The 1/100 Gusion Rebake was pretty decent, but unfortunately expensive as all hell since they insisted on boxing it with the vanilla Gusion parts.

I'll try and review the Gusion and the Lupus tomorrow if I have the time

I have recently acquired a large sum of wealth. Should I buy Sazabi Ver Aja or RE 1/100 Nightingale? I've had bad experiences with MGs being unable to support their own weight

i just finished sazabi actually. its an awesome kit with a lot of heft to it. nightingale is a kit ive never built, but ill vouch for sazabi

speaking of, the main wrist joint in his hand is super loose and the glue trick doesnt help. should i look into a new hand or is there something else i can try.
>>
>>14907752
>>14907752
oh its pretty sure. But the build is uncomplicated, colour seperation is non existant apart from the thrusters. God so many thrusters. it has MG hands for no reason and the arms and wrists droop just from holding the weapons. Detailing is crap.

Honestly, if I could swap my nightingale for a sazabi I'd do it in a heartbeat

You get a display cabinet from ikea and put them all in one spot. If one cabinet isn't enough you get another and put it in the opposite corner of the room.

Just don't stack the cabinets along a wall next to each other like at a museum. That's tacky af.

Not really, it's pretty simple and understandable

Painters invest that little bit of effort in their pictures because they already put so much into their painted kits, they want it to look good. They're more serious and dedicated to it.

Snappers are simply much more casual. And there's nothing wrong with that.

Get off your high horse.
>>
>>14910122
Here's something funny.

I have multiple PGs, dozens of MGs and a handful of HGs in my backlog. Their combined value is easily in the four figure range.

Yet I consider buying a camera too much of an expense just for taking pictures.

I dunno, maybe if it was shaped like Dorothy Wainwright and delivered pithy criticism while I took pictures with her cybereyes or something.

A camera really can help your kits look nice, but getting a proper light setup is a huge step in the right direction and is a lot less expensive. I took this pic with a nexus 6p phone camera, but I used a popup lightbox with 2 neutral white lights. If you have a pretty decent phone it may make more sense to just learn about the lighting you need and spend 50 bucks on that.

In the future don't apply all the force down on the blade, try and slide the blade along the nub like if you were slicing meat, that way if the blade slips the sharp part doesn't have all the force on it. Or you can aim the blade for your fingernail instead.

My very first attempt of modding one of my kits has been a success.

The problem now is that a combination of lack of experience and a shit camera means I cannot take proper photos.

I've made some room in the head of my GM and fit an LED light in there and it looks great. I can't photograph it without looking like pic related though.

If I add light, the LED gets drowned out. But without the light, it's just not quite there.

Super excited it worked though, I'll need to figure out a better solution to the battery placement though(they are affixed to the back of the head).

Lookin' good guy

I wouldn't stress having a great camera vs brushing up on a little photography. In this case you would want the camera stable (mounted or braced) with a lower light sensitivity (it's the ISO number in your manual controls, should be able to play with it between 200-700 ISO). A slower shutter speed (a longer exposure) will make the light stand out. So a stable camera, that is set to be more sensitive to light, given the time to pick it up, can have a nice highlight. Most cameras, from phones to the pocket-friendly automatics have a manual mode.

Your pictures aren't technically horrible. I think you're using a miniature version of the attached pic, which is awesome. I think you're are just a bit dark environmentally, which can be worked out in a few ways.

Number one is white balance: the white background has a lovely lack of feature but is pretty much gray. This is not a super common feature in cheap digital cameras. It basically means your camera balances color by picking up on true white, and the other colors sort out from there. You may want to search your camera's model online manual for deep features and find how it may white balance.

Second: natural lighting. There is no replacing true lightning. It seems your strongest light is above and to the right of the model. Look into getting a second (equally strong) light source involved on the other side. Ideally this will eliminate most/all shadow. Given your nice backdrop, look into making one or two "box lights" at home.

Three: if you're going to trying playing with manual (the more you mess with it, the more proficient you'll get, and it's much easier with still items) you may try a small bump to the ISO. However since ISO is sensitivity, a high ISO can make your photo grainy and lose quality. Real lighting is better vs bumping up ISO.

Lastly, start sizing down your photos some. The first picture I posted has under 1/4th the file size of yours and still looks sharp. Photoshop or say, Gimp (it's free) can allow you make copies of your photos to scale them down to post online. You can scale down the pixel X and Y dimensions while still retaining most of the quality in the jpgs you're taking. Look up a photo digital resizing guide. And don't be afraid of cropping out some of open space.
>>
Hi so I'm new to this. I'm on my second build but I must be cutting wrong cause I'm getting stress marks after cutting out of the runner and trimming. Is there anyway to fix these mistakes besides practice or is it not that much of a big deal because of the quality of plastic? My second model is the HG Gundam 00 Shia Qan[t] I'm thinking of painting at a later date.
>>
>>14911043
Cut closer to the runner instead of near the part.
Maximising the distance between the cut and the part reduces the chance of you stressing the plastic. Use a knife or file to trim the nub down. Sand it down using grit starting at low numbers such as 800, then increase in grit till the edge is smooth. You shouldn't really need to go past 1200 for a HG.
>>
>>14910935
It's the VF-1 that has the problems. The transformation gimmick it has causes a handful of problems, and it's best to stay away from the kit. If you want a VF-1, there are alternatives, but none of them transform. Wave has 1/100 strike and super Valkyrie and Batroid kits for around $40, but if you want GERWALK, you'll have to buy both. Hasegawa has a wide arrangement of VF-1 kits in 1/72 and 1/48, but they're all traditional models (ie. require glue and paint). They range in price from just over $10 to about $50, and they also sell a photo etched parts add-on and a weapons set (Hasegawa is known for including the bare minimum in terms of ordnance and selling them as an additional set)

Thanks for the advice but the gap between the plastic piece and the runner is really small so I kinda find that kinda awkward for me. Most of the runners were like this I'll probably get better with practice and experience.
>>
>>14911084
So cut the runner instead and then make smaller cuts afterwards.
>>
>>14911084
The stress marks are less noticeable on bright/light colour plastic.

Getting stress mark on a clear plastic is the worst, though.

Yeah, apparently the AX330 defaults to 3200, which may explain the grainyness in some of my shots.

That said, it is technically my fathers camera, so I need to remember to switch it back to Auto mode when I'm done, since both my parents can be rather technologically illiterate at times.

I really need to re-download GIMP...
Gelgoog Guy of the /toy/ thread suggested a free photo-resizing program, but it's really spammy about wanting you to buy the premium version.

While I can just use MS Paint to resize, GIMP would allow me to do actual post-production work, which if I'm not going to just throw the pics up straight from the memory card I might as well do.

Thanks, this is actually pretty easy and I think almost anyone with an airbrush can learn to do this. Maybe the most difficult part is learning to get the gloss even without dry spots and keeping the color consistent, but there's no precision shading or anything, so it's actually a lot easier than it looks.
>>
>>14912515
Do you let them air dry? Do you do anything special on the the smaller bits like the hands (as the smaller grooves look really clean)? Any those shoulders: is the trim separate from the whole top of the shell? If so, do you just use some decent tape to shield?

Man that makes me wish my Tryon turned out as good as that. Sure I did this with cans, but I realize that it's impossible to do a proper candy coat with that. I probably should get around to getting an airbrush setup somewhere, but it'll be hard to do that in an apartment I would think.
>>
>>14912534

What do you mean by air dry?

I did very little bodywork on this, a good metal finish will emphasize small details which is why you don't even really need to line.

The trim on the chest, shoulders, feet and fuel tank is all masked off because they are not separate pieces. I just used Tamiya masking tape and you just take your time and use little pieces.
>>
>>14912562

Yeah I think yours turned out great especially for cans which often produce really iffy metallics
>>
>>14912596
Cool beans. And by air dry I just mean letting it sit and naturally dry. Versus say, running a gentle fan nearby.
>>
>>14912603
It's airbrushed. The paint doesn't stay wet for very long.

>>14912556
You can use it for some parts, but you may have trouble with more recessed areas
>>
>>14912603

Oh yeah I would never use a fan for this, with glosses and especially enamels like this you have a much higher chance of wrecking the finish by blowing dust onto the wet paint. In fact when I do this stuff I use a large styrofoam box and put the pieces in on the sticks and close the top for a day so no dust gets in.
>>
>>14912615
Thanks.
>>
>>14912620

I should clarify that the colors are the enamels, the silver is not an enamel, it is a very "hot" lacquer that is different than a lacquer based acrylic like Mr hobby paints. It's more like thinner with super fine metal dust in it, and it dries extremely quickly but is also very delicate and will rub off.

>"You want it to hold the rifle without drilling a metal rod in? Well FUCK YOU"
>>
>>14912891
It really depends on the plastic. On some plastic you can snip pretty close to the piece and after sanding you won't see anything (i.e. most white pieces). On other pieces you'll have some stress marks left no matter how careful you are. When I was building HGUC revive Qubeley, for example, the difference was amazing. On the white parts I could be pretty carefree, but on the pink parts I had stress marks even if I snipped 5mm away from the piece, gently shaved it with a new blade, and sanded down the rest with progressively higher grits.

If you're painting, all that matters is that it's smooth. The stress won't show through the primer and paint.

MG Jesta is supposed to be the tacticool spec ops suit of UC. So its default dark blue colors actually work well. But if you want to get experimental you could try something in really dark gray(because straight up pure black usually looks shit) for maximum tacticool.

>this MG Gundam Thunderbolt I bought at Youmacon has 100+ Water Slide Decals.

Then dont put on the decals. It will still look fine without decals. Didn't you watch Gundam Build Fighters? You are suppose to enjoy building gunpla. If you are this upset over the decals, just put on the few you like or none at all, no one is forcing you to put each one on.

I personally love decaling, the look when it is all done is worth the time investment

>When is the best time to apply the stickers?
When the parts are built, because their might be stickers/decals that go across a seam where parts join. HOWEVER, once in a while it may be easier to place decals in certain spots because assembly can make some spots difficult to position a decal or sticker where it needs to go, so I would study the decal placement guide to see if there might be spots like this where decaling ahead of time would be beneficial.
>>

How do I go about sanding if the kit has a gloss injected finish? I'm working on the Qubeley Mk. II, and while the undergating is fine there are still some problem spots. Would future clash with the finish, making it stand out more?
>>
>>14914765
Use sanding sponges.
>>
>>14914782
Do they give any advantage over sticks for gloss injected kits?
>>
>>14914787
They're very gentle on the finish, and once you reach 1000 grit or less they basically end up polishing the surface instead.

So what you could do is carefully cut the nubs down to almost nothing, then start with 400 grit sponges and work up from there. The 4000 grit stuff I use can make bare plastic look like waxed and buffed metal.
>>

We were just discussing Rodi and other IBO variants in the show thread.

Honestly, with the IBO HGs all having near complete inner frames, you'd think pumping out other variants of frames like the Rodi would be a no brainer?
Hell, looking at Dalong, the only real issue I can see against just using the original Man Rodi's frame for the others is the space thruster in the insole!

...Damn, now that I think about it, the whole reason we may have gotten the Landman Rodi this season was specifically an excuse to re-tool the Rodi Frame Runners for the more flat footed Spinner and Garm!

Because if it does under that leg armor, then I wouldn't doubt it getting a kit, same with the Spinner, Garm, and Landman Rodi.

>>14915267
did, didn't have time to pick some up, did
>>
>>14915291
Topcoat isn't going to help that shitty texture, which is probably caused because your paint wasn't thinned well. The black looks decent enough, but the white looks bad and you can see the brush strokes in it. Red looks decent in some places, but god awful in others, and the gold just looks atrocious.
White is very hard to paint because it's overpowered by every other colour and stains easily. You want to make sure your hands, brush, and workspace are free of paint before you do a coat of white, otherwise you end up staining the piece. White primer, or sometimes white primer on top of grey primer, can also help.
>>
>>14915300
The white paint i had died on me half way through, had to thin down the congealed chunks of paint, red died early on but I replaced it, the gold is all my fault. Not used to painting big surfaces, thanks for the critsism, i can use it to not maul my kit next time

Well if you look at the Landman Rodi, you'll notice it doesn't have those thruster bells on the insole like the space-borne Man.
I'm guessing if it IS a recolor, it's been slightly retooled so the inner frame can be reused for the Spinner and Garm.

Eh, the Hloekk might be doable in HG...
Notice just how much of the HG Graze Frame leg length is the foot piece?
If the "sole" of the Hloekk foot is actually the bit that makes up the HG Graze Frames' ankle, it might still be doable...
