***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

== ACE PILOT GROUP BUILD ==

Starting September 1st, you have two months to build, customize, and paint a mobile suit of your choice into your own personal design. This can range from just a repainted Zaku to a kitbashed Gundam loaded with any spare rifles and Rocket Launchers you can find. Any suit from any series is fair game, just stick to 1/144 kits and you're good. When you're done feel free to post it in the thread, but also send pics to [email protected] so that all the entries can be judged/posted at once when the group build is over (If you don't want to be judged for the contest just feel free to mention it when you send in your pics).

Prizes include:
>1st Place: Any HG kit under $25 + an Action Base 2
>2nd Place: Any HG kit under $15
>3rd Place: An Action Base 2
(Note: Shipping is to USA and Canada only)

Group build ends on November 7th, lets gunpla!

I would call it too busy. I dislike designs like the Guncannon precisely because they take away perpherial vision for a humanoid giant robot (even if there's still unseen side cameras able to give it, the main camera should have as great a viewpoint as possible).

I'd say leave it as is. It'd also be difficult to reach that top mag, since it would also put the Zaku's forearm in front of its face to draw, rather than just across its chest with the other mags.

08th MS Team Zaku II
Seemed a fitting test kit for my first real attempt at doing a kit properly. I've snapped together lots of kits but wanted to start actually doing proper work on them. And the 08th Zaku kit seemed like old enough to be low enough quality to really practice seam filling and painting, and I have two of them, so if I messed up it wasn't a big deal

arnt the RGs notorious for being hand grenades? Maybe im thinking PGs
>>
>>14890741
>Is there a way I can reconnect it besides glueing?
Nope. You're gonna want to drill a tiny hole in both sides of the broken peg and stick a pin in it to reinforce it after you glue it. And you're gonna want to use something like tamiya cement, as it dissolves the plastic a little so it actually welds the parts together when it dries

>>14890752
I have no idea what happened it just fell off. I have some tamiya cement and Ill use that. The kit looks really nice though so this was a big disappointment
>>
>>14890756
It's a rotating joint and it's too small to just pop in
>>
>>14890750
The RG kits beyond the Gundam MK-II (and excluding Zeta) are very solid.

Anon probably just applied a lot of force onto the inner frame by holding onto the kit by its arm or something. Maybe he was moving the arm in a direction it wasn't supposed to move. Like in real life, that would cause broken bones.
>>
>>14890768
I wasnt moving it when it fell. I posed it,took a shower, and when I came back it just fell
>>
>>14890776

If you masturbate in the shower, its haram.

This is allah's vengeance.
>>
>>14890741
>>14890767
>>14890763

Yeah, don't use the cement unless you want to keep one arm in a fixed pose forever.

See the color differences between the point where it disconnected and the inner area? The difference in color is because they are different types of plastic. The inner frame portions are molded in different plastics at the same time. Theoretically, this should mean nothing is broken and is just popped off. How hard have you tried putting the part back in?
>>
>>14890786
Decently hard. It kind of looks like part of the peg broke when it fell and is still inside the other part. I may try to use the arm from another rg
>>
>>14890574

Pic unrelated.
>>
>>14890741
Did you like use some lacquer-base stuff on the RG frame?

I'm pretty sure RG frames are ABS.
>>
>>14890917
Oh, yeah, I primarily use an airbrush and masking when painting, with a small brush to take care of any cleanup that may have bled through.
I used a Paasche airbrush but I'm still learning its finer details, and just use in in a very basic capacity. For example my Zaku was done with one of those cheap airbrushes that use a can instead of a compressor, and it came out just as good.
>>
>>14891215

The Graze Ritter sword is a little different.
>>
Anime ja nai!
>>
>>14891495
RG Frames are a mix of ABS and PP plastic, Bandai use their differing melting points to make the frames pre-jointed. The plastic types for most gunpla are specified on the runner and in the instruction manual.

That said, Tamiya cement only works on ABS/PS and has no effect on the PP parts.

How hard is it to customize a build? I'm a novice builder, only 3 HGs under my belt, and with a lot of issues, but I wanted to try taking advantage of the halloween sale and make a customized/switched about version of a suit, and just wondering what you can do with customization? Is it just seperate weapons or can you mix and match accesories?
>>
>>14892928

It's basically up to you. There is a lot of flexibility depending on skill level.

And generally for HGs, most weapons can be held by other kits even from different series. Some can't because of peg issues, however. But those can be ground off if you're willing to get rid of the peg.

It's entirely up to you with how you want to take it.
>>
>>14892921
It's a pretty nice build for a cheaper price. If you were willing to spend more then I would recommend the Buster Gundam as a really solid build, but it doesn't have a lot of accessories. The SEED GAT MG like is all very similar in terms of build though, but they are all nice.
>>
>>14892934
Yeah, I'm just wondering if the banzai hobby sale is still going. I wanted to get some zeon suits and maybe have a Rick Dom with some more heavy artillery, maybe the Kampfer's mine belt with it.
>>
>>14892948
I think they still have stuff on sale. It looks like % might have changed a little but the HGUC Rick Dom is still a smooth 30% off.
>>
>>14892887
Can't go wrong with a Tallgeese. Pretty unique build compared to the other Wing MGs.

MG Double X is nice and fills a lot of space with the Twin Satellite Cannon deployed

Buster and Duel are good SEED picks

You may be able to find the Turn-A for less than 50, fun build, cow included

Exia is fun and sharp looking, get a stand

Shin Musha if you enjoy your gundams even more Samurai than usual
>>

I did. But I had only built the Gouf Custom and the Gundam Wing HGBF kit before that, couple nubs, broke his beam saber, and broke his jetpacks. Feels awful.
>>
>>14892978
I can't speak for the Hygogg (I personally don't like it) but the Kampfer is a solid zeek suit.
>>
>>14892978
Hygogg's arms are pretty cool to put together for a quick fun build.
>>
>>14892978

Pretty much all the yellow on an HGUC Kampfer is a sticker or has to be painted in. The Hygogg is really iffy because the design makes it difficult to pose freely, mostly due to how topheavy it is and the tiny, tiny feets.

But they both look good.

This is my first time buying from Japan, whats the recommended shipping method?

>>14893207
Depends where you are in the world. If you're liable to get hit with Import Tax, I'd recommend SAL or RSAL, otherwise, grab EMS for faster shipping.

SAL is 17$, RSAL is 30$, and EMS is more then my entire order. I'm probably going to cheap out and grab SAL and hope for the best.

Be aware that SAL is pretty slow by most people's standards. Usually I get my SAL orders around 2-3 weeks after I order.

EMS is when you buy an expensive MG (think MG Psycho Zaku ver Ka) or a PG.
It's quick and insured so if anything happens to your expensive kit you get reimbursed. Meanwhile if you buy a PG via SAL and it disappears, you're out $160~
I'm not entirely sure of the point of RSAL, actually. It's faster and tracked, but at the price point it almost feels like you should spend the little bit more for a proper insured courier like EMS.

ECOAS version has a completely different colour and visor attachment. Stark is an armor set with missiles. so no they couldn't do the same with ECOAS making it an armor set.

Green Stuff, is a sculptable resin putty that sets hard. Its primary use is in sculpting miniatures, and its ver popular among wargame hobbyists for sculpting modification for their miniatures. You can also use Green Stuff to make press molds of model parts. Investment is a 2 part silicone rubber mix that can be poured as a liquid around an object to make a high quality rubber mold once it sets, that can be easily cut in half and removed.

the hg the-o is so fucking worth it. I was on the fence about it for the longest time because it looked kind of shit in photos and I thought the engineering was going to be dated and terrible. Not so. The few instances where it shows it's age (no 360 rotation at the hips, etc) detract only the slightest bit.

So I decided on customizing the Dom Tropen, and I'm trying to think of what ways you could optimize the suits loadout.

Obviously its a desert suit, and the bulk of its armor was purposefully built to keep from the sand getting in and to prevent overheating. Did the Titans/AEUG ever have a counter to this? I'd assume the big advantages from the Tropen in combat would really show as battle wore on, or the best way to equip it would be with smaller explosives/machine guns that would shred enemy armor to let sand get in, damaging parts, but maybe I'm overthinking it.

The other way to go about it was thikning of a rushdown type suit with Dreissen's spear, and maybe the guncannons off Guncannon as shoulder mounted weapons to fire while closing the gap.

I'm just trying to recall desert warfare and make some adjustments based on th at. I was gonna see if I could add some cloth like Mamluks used to have but it makes no sense since the armor design of the Tropen was built with that in mind. I just feel like the typical mindset for a specialized soldier would be to kit themselves with their environment in mind. Maybe a Gouf cannon hand, and a vulcan attachment for riddling holes in armor.

soup, guys? recently started building these kits and I'm fucking loving it. I was building this wonderful kit and just as i got to the legs, I realize that some of the parts for one of the legs aren't there. I'm sure at some point, I must've clipped them out and put them somewhere but I've given up hope of actually finding them. One of my friends told me I could try bluefin in hopes of getting it replaced but they don't look like they're gonna reply for a while. I did find that gundam/zoid store but same thing
So I was wondering, what have you guys done to lost/misplaced parts? and what's happened to those gundams?
>>
>>14893970
Personally, if it's just armor, I'll sometimes leave it off in RG's or the like [battle damage] But on HG's, if I like the kit enough, I'll just pick up another if I absolutely have to.

Also yes, I just started on that kit the other day [is car theft anon], and I'm loving it, I've gotten the torso built, but I've been too busy to get back to it right now.

Also in reference to that, someone was saying the Mr. Hobby nippers are crap, just gotta say, personally, using them, I've found them to be quite a leap up from the old nippers I had [which I'm not even sure the brand.] I quite like these new ones.

>"Build 2 now and then pray you don't lose the other one"
Is this really a problem?

I'm actually serious on this, I have no idea on how "normal" people assemble their gunpla since I keep everything at what I assume are insane levels of organization.
>>
>>14895053
Blurry as fuck.
I'm kinda divided on foot braces actually.
Two piece means they're easy to assemble, but they have the potential to become unaligned if you don't glue them together.
One piece might be a bit finnicky with stretching, but I've dealt with stuff of that caliber (one-piece rubber tracks for a tank) and once it's on it's all one solid piece.
>>
>>14895061
I'm probably not normal, but I build everything straight from the sprue.
Nip off part, file down the nub and sand, then assemble. Nip off next part, file it, Ad Infinitum until the kit is assembled.
I guess everyone else removes all of the pieces, sands them all at once and then assembles from unmarked pieces but generally sorted pieces. I suppose I'd do that for a kit I was going to paint.
>>
>>14895069
>I guess everyone else removes all of the pieces

>>
>>14895138
Are you willing to mod? If so then it'll take time, but it's possible. If not then you're rolling the dice.

It highly depends on what you intend on doing and the age difference between kits.

I'd suggest looking at instruction scans at dalong and checking how the parts connect together. Once you know how easy or hard it is to do what you intend on doing, then decide whether you'll go through with it or not.

I never understood this "snapshit" mentality when the kits are literally snap-together, articulated, and colored mostly correctly outside of some details.
>>
>>14896794

The running "snapshit" mentality is that, most snapfitters don't:

Clean nubs
Panel Line
Decal
Do any level of customization.

Essentially they just snap the pieces out, slam them together, and that's it... 0 additional work is put in.

That being said, that's where most of us start, it's essentially the old "Fuck N00Bz" mentality from online gaming, just put into Plamo. I don't really get it either, it's much easier to guide and teach than people think, though I will admit, sometimes the level of "stupid questions" get a bit, annoying.
>>
>>14896794
Snapshit is the annoying tripfag.
>>
>>14896794
Hey man, we are here to have fun, not to be anal about details. What's the point of spending a few days on a kit when I can build 3 or 4 in one day?

you have to realize that it is these people who are giving bandai tons of money for R&D
>>
>>14896794
snapfags are probably Bandai's most desired type of customer because they:

1. Work through their backlog at incredible speeds

2. Buy tons of model kits because they complete kits at very fast speeds.

Advanced builders are the worst because they:

1. Buy one or two kits per year

2. Spend an ass load of time working on those kits, thus making Bandai unable to earn more money off of sales
>>
>>14896831

You know a lot of advanced builders straight build plenty of kits to relax and fill the time between working on their sick customs, right?
>>
>>14896837
So what you're saying is that there is no reason for snapfags to exist?
>>
>>14896794
I don't have a problem with people who snap kits together. I have a problem with people thinking they're expert modelers for being able to "finish" a kit in ~2 hours and post it here like they're done the bare minimum and proceed to post their nub-filled un-panel lined kit. It just looks bad.

>Hey, would a silver sharpie work well for minor battle damage/chipping? Or is there another, better method?
silver sharpies need fixative on them, otherwise they eventually flake off
source: Buddy's 1/2 Tardis and the despair after moving it and all the autographs fell off.
>>
>>14897129

Even if sprayed with a finish after?
>>
>>14897120

Drybrushing works well of course, but for just minor stuff get black, silver, and brown colored pencils, they are cheap and work really well. Best used on top of matte paint or matte topcoat. I use silver all the time for edges.

a finish should do it, just something to keep it on

Yes and no. Paint chips would be the base color of whatever was underneath the paint. I would prefer using steel or a rusty brown color.

As far as techniques, remember to think scale. The chipping should be to scale of whatever kit you're building. You could use a various number tools to replicate this. Most people use a piece of a sponge and drybrush it on edges, or use a toothpick or fine brush and gently dot in areas where armor would make contact.

Don't be afraid to look at tanks or ww2 aircraft. That will give you a better idea.
>>
>>14897148

you can even break off some of the "lead" and grind it up to make dust for effects, it's one of the easiest ways to try some basic weathering

Nice meems bro!

I thinned the shit out of these paints before brushing. And did some rudimentary dry-brush weathering. I personally feel quite accomplished with this little guy.
>>
>>14897759
You did too many layers or something then. You can see where the paint has pooled in some places (especially the right forearm). Brush strokes are also noticeable. Some masking tape could also have been used for the collar, you'd get a more crisp line that way.
>>
>>14897773
I did use masking tape. That was just me trying to do some panel lines, which is hard with a bit of a shaker hand. But yeah, I did see it pool up a bit. I need to get a handle on the brush more. Thanks for the feedback!

If you have shaky hands, it might be easier to do a panel wash. The only extra thing you would really need to do is apply a gloss coat over the paint. Future is excellent for this and can be easily brushed on.
>>
>>14897788
I've been looking for Panel Wash everywhere and can't find it in stores. I'm a little skeptical about buying online since I don't know if it's the right stuff, (had bad experiences buying paints online, so I don't like doing it) and I typically stick to Amazon. Maybe I should invest in some good Panel wash though.

>>
>>14897799

Always try thinning enamel paints and cleaning up with a q-tip.
>>

You could always try to make your own. Just need some enamel paint and zippo lighter fluid (turpenoid-based) or mineral spirits (white spirits). Lighter fluid works better for this as it's less aggressive than mineral spirits

Yeah, I've been debating on this myself...
Thing was, the wear on the arm and guards was an application of my technique for doing the bladed edges; Applying a line of paint to the leading edge, then running the surface across a paper towel in the direction of the wear.

That's kinda where I'm at a loss on the legs; Which edges are the leading ones and what direction is the wear going?

I also ringed a few of the circular joints in silver for rotational wear, but I think it only really worked on the Domehead seams.

>I'm no master poser, but try to have some bend in some of the limbs, have the torso turn to the aiming direction instead of straight forward,
Alright, I'll even dig out my Full Armor Gundam Thunderbolt's stand for aerial posing.

Honestly, the probable reason this last batch of pics is so plain is that it was more a showcase for the paint apps.

I don't like the backpack because it is so fuckbig that it makes the suit look fat from the front. It's kinda like the AGE-3 where if you have the backpack on it looks really huge, but then you take the backpack off and it's a skinny fuck like AGE-1.

The backpack of the Reginlaze shows through the waist because the waist is so thin, and then you end up with this huge block optical illusion.

Other than that kit is great.
