The combined toy looks half-way decent if you squint and look from a distance. But given Hollywood's track records, we'll probably get those shitty 'guy-in-a-suit' proportions for the CG.

My main problem is that the zords we're fun since you could clearly identify all the different bots/parts that went into making it.

Aww man this is disappointing, I've read a bit of the script and was some what excited from what I read.

Now seeing what the actual design they went with just crushed all of that excitement.

Post other terrible robot designs. I need some shit to compare this to. We need to establish a baseline of terribleness.

I just don't really "get" it. If they were not going to be slavish to the original, I expected them to fall in line with recent trends and make something similar to either Iron Man, Bay Transformers, or Pacific Rim. But this, this is just out of left field. If you told me this was an armored form of the red ranger, I'd probably believe you. It really does not come off looking like a machine - it looks too "organic".

The problem here is that it's not the fucking Megazord. Daizyujin is basically God-tier as far as sentai robot designs go, even if they just Hollywooded its shit up, it would still be less jarring than whatever the fuck that is.
I don't dislike the design on its own, I'd be okay with is if it was the design for a generic sci-fi powersuit thing or something from a fantasy game, even if the feet are fucked up, but I simply can't accept it as the Megazord.

It works, just not very well.

Tyrannosaurus detaches its head, tail, and legs, turns the torso sideways and that forms the upper torso. The tyrannosaurus legs attach to where the head and tail were formerly attached to form the shoulders, the tail and I think the head become the left arm sword while the back cannon becomes the right arm cannon. The triceratops and mastodon both transform the same way: the underbelly folds out and back to become each thigh, the transformation joint doubles as the knee joint.

Sabertooth tiger just kind of folds up to become the lower torso.

Pterodactyl attaches to the back I guess and I think the head either comes from it or it's inside the tyrannosaurus.

It's not a hypothetically bad transformation structure, but the proportions and actual details are awful.

Why would this happen? The Rangers in this movie are still good guys, even if their Zord is ugly. They're also far more convincing teenagers than the older rangers are now days.

Saban isn't going to have their heroic teenagers with attitude job against some forty-to fifty-year-olds with a mech that today's kids don't remember and aren't nostalgic for.

I went so long without paying attention to this minus the pics I saw on /m/ but unfortunately the trailer played before Dr. Strange so I had no choice.

Just as personal rule of thumb, if the first movie trailer for a nostalgic property does that thing where you see the regular humans and them doing shit and then slowly discovering something weird is happening and then they only show the actual thing the property is famous for for like a few seconds at the end, it's a bad bad sign.

I don't think that's out of the question, although it won't be a success on the level of, say, one of Bay's Transformers films.

Just judging from the trailer, it looks like a "teenagers of low social standing get powers" story in the style of Chronicle, but with more overt superheroness and with a more diverse set of characters. It could easily tap into both the super hero markets and the adolescent fiction markets (ie Hunger Games) and become a modest success.

Now, that isn't to say it'd be the kind of movie the average /m/ poster or even sentai fan will like, but the rest of the world doesn't care what /m/ likes or hates.
