Giant Robo follows a lot of accepted dramatic conventions but it doesn't even attempt to tackle human nature except on most generic terms, to say nothing of psychology so I don't see anything all that Shakespearean about it.

I personally hate F91. Cecily is a terrible character who ping pongs between alliances, other characters are introduced for apparently no reason beyond immediately being killed, a massive secondary cast is established yet never fleshed out, the villain is a poorly conceived pile of generic stereotypes whose ultimate goal is to kill the earth with saws, and Seabrook is just kind of dull.

What F91 did you watch? I was assuming for a few seconds that you were on about Crossbone too - but that's just as inaccurate to Crossbone as to F91.

For a start, while the units in F91 do have/use some conventional weapons, presuming conventional means "bullets and not beams", they're secondary in most cases and outside of the G-Cannon it's really just vulcans/machine cannons (which see little to no use) or the shot lancers. Which are not exactly conventional given that they're space lances. The villain aesthetic isn't "Zeon + Space Pirates" for either F91 or Crossbone, given that F91 is German stormtroopers (and thus vaguely Zeon given the shared heritage) and Crossbones is mostly just "anything goes, including circus performers". Neither of them include villains based on pirates though. There's only 1 Gundam in F91 for that matter, and I'd hardly describe it as scary. Nor would I describe any of the Gundams in Crossbone as scary, though it does have several. Crossbone also isn't "depressed" Tomino, or really Tomino at all - though F91 is kind of depressed Tomino I guess, since it includes lots of civilian death. Maybe my post wasn't literal enough. They're not "pirates" but they have something approaching a jolly roger for an insignia and Cosmo Babylonia is an officially unrecognized force (like pirates).

The opening scenes of F91 were pretty gruesome, I'd say it outdoes Victory. I can only compare Tomino's work with his other work when trying to analyze his works but I don't think anything in any Gundam series has topped the sort of 9/11 mayhem happening everywhere on screen in F91. That woman who gets knocked dead with a shell casing for instance, there's your prominent example of conventional weaponry btw.

I wouldn't say the gasmask look of the Crossbone grunts are scary, so much as they're intimidating - though again, that's really more quibbling over the word and I agree with the sentiment you were almost definitely looking to ascribe to them. I disagreed with you mostly because the F91 you described didn't sound like that on screen to me, though given your reply I can see what you meant. As for whether it's more gruesome, I suppose it really comes down to your definition and personal opinion. The gruesomeness of F91 is really more distant from the characters and plot, which are mostly fairly hopeful despite the horror around them while that of Victory is less gruesome in the social scale and more on a personal level and grinding the characters involved down for melodrama much more than in F91.
