You know it's pretty shocking how easy it is to forget that her does stuff like this. I've heard Turn A described as a pulp fiction style anime, and remembering stuff like the above (alongside giant robots from space fighting bi-planes and other pulpy goofiness), I cannot help but agree.

All Loran needs is some more muscles, a shift in how the story perceives him, and some Western-style inking applied to him and he'd probably make a fine mild mannered comic book hero.

Daily reminder that never again will a Gundam song be as good as Tsuki no Mayu.

I got to episode 30 something and got bored of it, i havent yet even thought of going back to it, the lack of action and seemingly pointless filler parts really put me off, last part i watch i remember watching, Loran getting captured by some tribe of people and i was just sitting there going to myself 'this is not what i wanted to watch gundam for'

I feel you and I was kind of frustrated that it took 37 episodes for Loran to fully hit his stride as a pilot and for the greater outer space battles to start (imo the ideal Gundam battle is something like the standard fare from Zeta. Brutal, intimate, gritty battles in the cold depths of space), but everything that makes Turn A different is kind of a hook.

After completing it, the whole series seems like a clever, meta statement on the Gundam series and that whole arc's religious/primitive perspective brought that out. In the rest of UC, the characters have a very literal, scientific perspective but the ones in Turn A had neat way of looking at things in terms of myth and symbols. Strange that there isn't really a dominant, powerful religion in Turn A like Greco or Victory.

I think I'm one of the few Gundam fans who doesn't like Turn A. I still have about 10 episodes to go (been watching it over time since I picked it up on Rightstuf a few months ago) but so far it's felt like a drag and I really only want to finish for the sake of finishing, not so much that I want to know how it ends.

From what I remember, it was mostly maligned by male teens and kids who expected a "mech" show. It has always been LOVED by many female fans (not many enough compared to male fans) and adult male fans - at least in Japan, except that the gundam design was criticized hard by the majority. A lot of kids were disappointed and the TV view rating dropped so miserably, gunpla buyers didn't like it and toys and videos hardly sold, and Tomino was bashed hard.
Kids hardly understood the story, it was hard to follow if you skip any, easy to miss out details, and not much mech fights. I'm sure male fans had a hard time relating to the chars as the protagonist was a rather feminine (it was the first gundam ever that the protagonist was played by a female VA) pacifist, the important characters were mostly "strong" women, not even a single moe girl in it. Mech fighting is never the main part of this show; gundam is used as a tool or an icon mostly.

I have it on pretty good authority that the main character was supposed to be a woman. But the stupid Sunrise executives didn't think that a Gundam show with a female protagonist would sell, and made the director turn her into a man. As a sort of "protest" the main character was made to cross dress as ofter as possible, and have very feminine features.
