First season is pretty boring, TSR is what made me actually like the series. I hear the later parts of it more or less drop the high school bits, cautiously optimistic about that.

On one hand, fuck high school settings, on the other, I'll miss not being able to watch Sosuke autistically bumble his way through normal human interaction. Seeing only his combat side seems like it'd be boring.

The highschool parts are exaggerated in the first season because they added some side stories.

While the first volumes ARE more lighthearted they don't have as many highschool bits.

Still it's the best way to start the series because those moments make you like the characters and get to know them, the series becomes more and more serious and sad at points so you can feel for those characters, unlike other mecha where it's just senseless fights and the characters are poorly written.

Basically the school bits get dropped after TSR. sosuke loses the arbalast and goes to a 3rd world to fight in armslave deathmatches after mithril is destroyed. After mirthil falls, it becomes less "we are a powerful super funded group and this kid can do w/e he wants for comedy reasons because unlimited funding and skill" to "WE GOT NO MONEY, OUR WEAPONS HAVNT BEEN SERVICED IN A LONG TIME AND SHITS GOING DOWN" struggles.

I honestly felt that Sophia should have been explored a fuck ton more. And my biggest complaint was no one reached the height of Gauron. The only one that came close was Kalinin, and thats only because emotional ties.

Leonard never once felt like a threat or even like a antagonist. He felt like a spoiled little bitch who couldnt be bothered to do a god damn thing and was bored to even be in the book. I know he was suppose to come off as this highly intelligent guy who was beyond most people and it was a bother to have to fight, but he never lived up to any of that shit. He was a mediocre pilot in a great AS, his hand to hand was far below even webers, his intelligence was never once really brought up or even mentioned. He was a bitch.

Its sad when a random thug (dude who tried to blow up the highschool and fought sosuke at the death match) had more presence and stay than the big bad of the books.

Leonard had the blueprints for a great endgame villain. He was super smart, built human sized AS's, was suppose to be an amazing AS pilot, was considered by Amalgam to be one of the best strategists ever born, etc. If they followed that, the final fight should have been batman with an army of men and armslaves and he had tons of preptime, as well as could see the future (in probability). That would make an amazing end fight.

The only way that could work better in animated form is to set it up from the get go since it came out of nowhere in the novels and generally give him a better motivation either have something happen during the story that makes him lose faith in humanity and MITHRIL don't make it like he was never on their side the entire time and it could work.

There's really no way of knowing how much is going to be CGI and how much is going to be 2D.

They have three mechanical directors working on this. Two of whom are extremely proficient at 2D. Nishii was one of the main animators for 00 and Matsumara was the chief mechanical director for Break Blade and Rinne (both of which had 2D for mechs). Not to mention Yoshioka is working on this too and he does a ton of shit for BONES.

So it's really a complete fucking tossup how much is going to be 2D and how much is CGI.

2) the little we had have been heavily modified from the original plot and could hardly be retcon without remaking the entire show

I liked the first season for the balance of military action, intrigue, and lighthearted school humor.

I liked Fumoffu for being hilarious as fuck.

I LOVED TSR for ramping up the darkness and using my attachment to the characters from previous seasons against my heart.
There's some incredible dramatic material in that season, and what a shame KyoAni never made another good series again.

I'd say TSR is my favorite but without the other two series it simply won't have the same impact.
