With Gears Online basically dead/defunct/outdated at this point, including their forums, I feel like we ought to make a new database for FSS. The material from Gears Online hasn't been updated in years (since the early 2000s I believe), and most of the scans are ancient, which means lower quality images. Considering the crapload of new material we've had since then (various updated artbooks, new charcters, the entire Goticmade retcon), the entire site is no longer really useful other than providing the most basic information about FSS.
I've been thinking about doing this myself for a while, but never really got around to it because it's kind of a beast to tackle. Is there anyone else here who would be interested in helping me out with this?

You'd have to find someone interested in translating a shit load of new character profiles and mecha.

A good chunk of the descriptions written in the character and tech bios of the manga have already been translated in the English version, but Gears hasn't updated that either. All it has are very brief descriptions. Occasionally there is some great stuff (like the MH internal structure which they translated themselves) but for the most part the site is horribly half-assed. Especially the character bios.
Gothicmade doesn't even need description. They are just reskinned MH. All that needs to be said is the general differences between an MH and GTM (which we already have full translations of) and which GTM is which MH.

They're the same designs you dingus.

>dat batshu
>dat bang doll
WTF why are they soo ugly

You should contact Archive or go to /tg/ and ask there. The chucklefucks on /m/ can't contribute shit because a grand total of 5 people at most here have even read FSS. I would like to help out but it's too much work for me right now. Do you even know where you would even host the site?
Have you thought about contacting the admin of Gears Online too? It might just be easier to get permission to update their pages instead of making something from scratch.
>>14885804
they are worse designs
>>14885816
>>14885829
I agree, but they are new art and have to be updated for reference's sake.
>>14885825
Never been to /tg/, and I don't know what Archive can even do in this case. All I want is manpower to help me through this, but I could easily pull it off myself if I had more time.
I'll worry about the domains and hosting when I actually finish all the profiles and image editing.

Also, the amount of information I can write will only be based on what the books have to say, so mostly tech data and such. Character histories and the deeper lore stuff would be challenging.
So far I've been looking at the Designs books and cleaning up the MH lineart in them, and it's like getting a BD release of your favorite 80s anime. The scans from Gears Online really are dated garbage.

Going through this stuff just makes me miss the Mortar Headds even more.

Even designs I originally didn't like like the Blue Armor now look fantastic.

And my favorite of the bunch, the original Neptune. This is twenty times better than the older lineart.
:^)

anon, youre doing gods work. seriously, thank you for this.

Everyone's favorite fat fedora tipper
>>14886398
Not all the new lineart is perfect unfortunately. Nagano never updated the colors on the old Ashura Temple so it still looks terrible.
>>14886432
Ideally it should have been similar colors to the newer MP version.
>>14886463
>>14886525
Now comes the big boy. Gears Online managed to get the stitched version somehow but this is obviously better quality with updated colors.

The existence of the new designs doesn't remove the old ones. These pictures are a testament to that.
Bump
It's interesting that Nagano would always go back and modify his lineart to match the current times. I've never seen any other mecha designer do this, and usually if they do it's for an anime adaptation or if they hand it off to someone else to redraw it (i.e. Katoki and Okawara).
>>14887821
Compared to the older version.
>>14887822
What was really interesting was that Gothicmade wasn't actually the first time he pulled off a retcon of previous designs. For example, LED Mirage, Cross Mirage, Rouge Mirage, Vatshu and Junchoon were all redesigned at some point in time. Unlike Gothicmade though these redesigns were easily identifiable as the successors to the originals.
The Junchoon's early type, for example, had been retconned to look like the Engage SR3.
I don't know what to make of these Mortarheadds and Gothicmades, and Nagano's designs in general.
Some of them look incredibly elegant and refined, but others are total clusterfucks.
>>14887851
Nagano's designs are not for everyone, especially people who can't stand strange proportions and impractical design cues. Anyone I know who holds Ebikawa as their #1 designer hates Nagano with a passion.
The original Five Star Stories looked awesome, but this Gothicmade looks like shit.
New is not better than old.

Whoa, I've certainly never heard that opinion before
