This is such a cute and charming little show. It's the right amount of cheese but the animation is surpassingly consistent. Felt like a more well put together 70s Toei motw Mecha show.

It's pretty smart with its budget and you hides lazy animation by making the art target stylish detailed for the kind of art direction it has. There is actually not that much animation reuse outside of the stuff that happens every episode which is the monster and impact summoning and a couple shots inside impact's cockpit.

Then again with a very 70s feeling kind of anime made in the 90s it probably alleviates the budget, only series with a similar feeling animation is Medabots but Medabots had way more reused animation. Another thing that could be a source of budget was the sound design is a bit shitty in some regards(sounds mixing and copious use of some public domain sounds mainly), but it shows this was when Konami still gave a fuck.

It likely helps that Katsuyoshi Yatabe (the director http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=creator&creatorid=1743) had helmed the first three Brave Series, so he certainly knows how to handle a weekly formula (heck, isn't Makuamuge basically a Dino Geist/Draias/Ohboss analogue?).

Considering that Bee Train did that one, it's no surprise. Its head Koichi Mashimo eventually used budget saving methods for artsy stuff.

Yeah he knows how to cut corners in just the right ways, particularly so the big fight every episode is well animated and satisfying. He knows that really well key frames distract the audience that you go several seconds where dialogue is just lip flaps over beat static images, then when animation does happen its usually very well done and appealing. Guy definitely knows his stuff for formulaic series, and yeah Makuamuge and Seppukumaru feel like Brave stuff infused with Goemon style.

As for Medabots what you said is also true because that series liked reusing a fuck ton of animation so that everything new could be really well animated and dynamic when the action kicked in. There's a bunch of filler before the tournament arc which meant every episode was like 50% reused footage but then the arc kicks off and its got some of the most animation I've seen in a weekly show off its period.
