I like ZZ just fine but I'm not crazy. The best thing I can say about it is that it's more like 0079 than Zeta was, especially after the tone shift.

As for OP, stick with it until said tone shift. Although if you care about Gundam at all you should probably finish it even if your feelings don't change.

There's still a bit of weirdness with Moon Moon and Tigerbalm, but that Looney Toons stuff stops when they leave Shangrila.
(my headcanon is that there's something wrong with the air and everyone is literally high as fuck during the Shangrila arc)

Just skip it. You can go from Zeta to CCA with little trouble. ZZ is more for hardcore completionists anyway. The only things you really need to know about ZZ is:
-Zeon remnants have another spacenoid uprising and lost again
-Londo Bell is now the Feds' special operations arm after the failure of the Titans
-Zeon remnants were experimenting with making cloned cyber new types called Puru/Ple

I'm going to be honest OP. ZZ is a mistake. It's the only Gundam I have no intention of ever watching again. The second half is decent, but it's hard to shake that somehow all the characters are the same goof ball scooby doo wacky caricatures from the first half. Like Glemy starts off as a random teenage pilot whining how he wants his mommy and suddenly I'm supposed to take him seriously as a leader of Neo-Zeon?

Even after the 'hump' of ZZ, the humor doesn't go away and comes up during the most inappropriate times. There is another lolrandumb arc in Tigerbaum near the end of the series, and part of that ends with a wacky comedic chase through the streets by a dumb looking industrial mobile suit that suddenly gets all 'tear jerky' because a random secondary characters dies. It's straight up moronic at times.

If you aren't liking it, don't force yourself to watch 40 more episodes just because people on the internet say you should. There are some genuinely good episodes, I think the earth arc is a pleasant watch. But it's not worth it if you hate it already.

I've got 5 episodes left of ZZ. So far, not as good as Zeta, but better than 0079, except for that early goofiness. All I have left of UC is V after this.

Why do people use "It's too goofy" argument to describe why they think ZZ is bad, as if that's somehow an objectively bad thing?

I like ZZ because it's kinda goofy, and a nice change of pace after Zeta. I don't even hate Zeta, but if ZZ was just Zeta Season 2 it would've started to become a huge slog. Plus it's not even THAT much goofier than some of the stuff in 0079. Do most UC fans just like to pretend Gundam is/should be way more serious than it actually is?

I don't know what he did that was so bad to cause you to loathe him so much, Beltorchika didn't understand what was going on between Kamille and Amuro which is very much part of the narrative, and Amuro has spent seven years as a war-weary instructor under house arrest. I can't hate him for that, I can't hate him for how he reacts to things and I can't hate him for not wanting to go back to war.

It also concerns me that you reduced the dynamic Beltorchika had with Amuro and Kamille to "annoying."

I plan on watching all Gundam series' as my first foray into actually watching anime, and I recently started ZZ as well. I find myself yawning throughout. It probably doesn't help that I can't find a dub, no matter how shitty it might be, but I'd just really prefer to watch and have the ability to look away if need be and still be able to know what's going on.

Guess I'll have to get used to it though, seems like a good chunk of Gundam series' don't have dubs, at least from what I can tell.

I wouldn't give a damn if it was "too goofy", the problem with the show is that it switches gears about a third through into a "serious war drama" like its precursors, only to then change gears again and end up as this bizarre mixture of comedy and drama for the final third. I enjoyed the beginning silly episodes of ZZ, even if they were an awful aftermath to Zeta. The Africa and Ireland arcs were very good in themselves. But then the final third is just about the stupidest thing I've ever seen. All these mood jumps are what ruined the show for me.

I struggled through ZZ and at the end of it, it was not as bad as what I first thought. The only thing that really bugged me was judau's personality. I get he is suppose to be happy and optimistic, but people die around him and he doesn't he grieve or seem to give a shit. Sometimes he is boiling with rage and a minute later he goes back to happy go lucky. ZZ is still miles better than 08th ms team.

So, here we have Fa who has been through lots of battles, who knows how to handle a mobile suit, a Gryps Conflict veteran. She may have not been the best, or good, or decent, but she certainly has had tons of experience. So how in the flying fuck junkyard kid who doesn't even know how to pilot mobile suit is already a x10 better choice than her? I mean, yes, Newtype magic, I get it, my point is that he should've gradually surpassed Fa.

This is something that annoys me since Zeta. The thing about 0079 is that other characters besides Amuro did grow as fighters too. Most notable example is of course Kai who after Mahiru's death became kind of really cool and was taking down Zeon troops on his own. But since Zeta everyone is constantly being saved by Newtype boy.

ZZ is fine but it certainly is not "Best Early UC" like >>14869179 said, in fact, it's probably the worst of the long form early UC shows. That's not to say it's bad, but it's not amazing. Judau is fun but ultimately extremely hollow past being hotblooded and goofy, his friends aren't as bad as people say but they are inconsistent. Glemy turns into a different character on a dime to fit some archetypes, and isn't a strong villain, and as a result of the shift to him playing the villainous role, Haman is severely hampered, at times breaking the defined characterization she's been given.
The explanation of the Puru project that Glemy has somehow been working on for so long is silly and their existence makes the viewer scratch their head.
Overall I don't want anyone to get the wrong idea and think I'm trying to prove that ZZ is terrible, but the there are a few serious problems that have been acknowledged time and again. However as of late (and possibly as a result of the Zeta shitposting), it got a massive elevation in popularity.
By all means, OP should finish it, and it is fun (and Moon Moon isn't as bad as they say), but it's understandable if OP has problems with it. It went through a confusing development process and that really shows.
