I understand that Kondo does his own artistic take on stuff and, while I love to see non-MS weapons kicking ass in a Gundam setting, it's really jarring to see a freaking A-10 fighting against Zakus.

I think the creative freedom of doing what he wants in Side Stories, which are not ruled by "UC canon", allows him to get more passionate about working on manga. Kondo has a artboner for real life military vehicles, all the way back to WW2 stuff, so any artist that get the chance to draw personal favorite stuff in commissioned work is going to jump at the chance.
