If you have a mecha show that has idols, school setting, yuri and moe in spades you'd better run away because there is simply no way anything good will come of it.
Now, small doses of those elements can be useful and funny to have in a mecha show.
But if you sacrifice the mecha part of the fucking mecha show for some stupid lolis then you're betraying the show's mecha(nical) nature.
As a case in point Delta was fucking shit because we had barely 1 full episode out of 24/6 (I even forgot how many episodes this fucking failure was) of mecha content. This is not the way to do it.

Walkure Attack is basically the first anime related album in 5 years that went platinum and which is not JAV Live or Nana Mizuki. Those are exceptionally good sales.

This, a lot of 2016's mecha shows were generic copies of generic moe,sol,and LN adaption anime.
The mecha genre is dying because instead of producer's and creators adding in these elements when needed they do it to capitalize on trends.

Mecha anime can probably work with these elements when the creator gives a shit, but most recent examples are just using them as otaku bait to boost sales.

Then these otaku get latched to the franchise/genre bringing their shit taste with them and the market shift forces studios to make content that panders to stupid stuff.

Or some of these otaku become anime producers themselves, but because most of what they're influenced by is mass-produced low quality anime they make more of the same.
This is way different from the earlier days of otaku culture because back then being an otaku wasn't just about liking anime, it meant you liked anime primarily, but with other geeky interests like movies,games, and books as well.
Also the people creating anime didn't have that much to take influence from within the medium, so they looked elsewhere.

This problem isn't even exclusive to mecha anime alone.
The entire fantasy adventure genre has been corrupted for at least a decade, I mean when was the last time we got a fantasy show that wasn't some cheap LN adaption, or a harem, or used a boring world that stole mmorpg and lotr elements while adding a gimmick?

Anime is nowhere near as experimental as it uses to be outside a handful of studios.
And even when those studios not making risky stuff they need to crank out more shitty shows to keep themselves afloat.

Mecha just doesn't have the LCD appeal anymore. But that said, idols aren't going to reinvigorate the genre.

I actually think Macross Delta could have been on the right track, much like Frontier was, but the pop music element seemed like a distraction. Frontier's idol mess seemed more organic because it was gradually built up.

Moe is the "thing" right now because there are so many sad people wanting to relive their sad high school crushes in Japan and there will always be more people who like jacking off than there are people who like robots.

It's a generational thing. Generations have things they like and genres come and go. Westerns, for example. Grandparents and great grandparents liked them, but with few exceptions it is not a common genre these days. It occasionally is resurrected with great appeal, and that's fantastic.

Consider the "sword and sorcery barbarian fantasy" of the eighties, or the slasher thriller films of the eighties. Consider the hard boiled detective stories of the 30s and 40s. Genres come in and out of popularity, but they do have people who will always be fans, and there will always be resurgences of popularity.

Her inclusion in the jenus family is the cause of that.

Battles in every episode is something only ADHD kids would want so they can discuss it next day in school with friends. For absolutely anyone else it's obvious this requirement will hurt narrative, plot and pacing. It would leave less time for characters and make those battles less impactful or completely meaningless.
