He is history though.
>>
>>14851009
In some ways that's unfair, in other ways it's accurate. I'm more interested in the author-insert aspect of Yang. I think he starts the story off around the same age as the author was when he was writing the books, and the author is a history buff.

Yang is the sort of Mary Sue whose flaws are all exceedingly perfect in their humanity and/or lovable. But I don't care, I couldn't help myself, he became my ultimate role model.
>>
>>14851009
How can you be Mary Sue if you die?
>>
I keep trying to get into this series but I always get bored after watching for like 20 minutes. I really want to like it but I just find it so fucking boring. Does it get less slow later on?
>>
>>14851330
>Does it get less slow later on?
You'll appreciate the slow start after a few episodes. If it didn't have such a slow start the rest of the series plot points wouldn't have as much apunch as they do
>>
>>14851301
Next you're going to tell me Jesus Christ isn't a Mary Sue.

Less a mary sue, more just the undisputed best at his job. A mary sue is typically great at everything.

This, after El Facil he got boosted up a lot even got shit on till his captain died.

Unless most others in the fleet they respected him and focused on minimizing casualties not going until you die for glory
>>
>>14851330
Have you seen the movies? Best way to start the series.

LOGH is meant to be binge-watched, if you watch 10 episodes consecutively, it's like watching an extremely well paced, long-ass movie.

The nice thing about Yang's flaws is how they get him killed
>>
>>14856421

Liking alcohol doesn't make you an alcoholic. Unless there's a scene where he completely fucks something up because he couldn't resist the allure of drinking and had to drink even when he knew it wasn't a good idea or something that I'm forgetting then he wasn't an alcoholic.

At the start of the series its true that Yang only "likes" alcohol. If you keep track on his consumption and the comments from his colleagues as the series goes on, it becomes pretty evident that Yang Wen-Li used alcohol as a way to deal with his feeling of guilt for killing millions of people.

Don't get me wrong, Yang wasn't a raging drunk, but he did usually make certain to have a pleasant buzz going on when he needed to be brave enough to kill a few million people in a space battle.
>>
>>14856574
Wow so he enjoys alcohol what a flawed character totally not a mary sue
>>
>>14856933
Enjoying alchohol for fun =/= using it for a coping mechanism. McNulty is an alcoholic for basically all of The Wire, but at least at the show's beginning, he's very functional. You don't have to kill Olde English on a park bench at 2 p.m. to be an alcoholic my dude
>>
>>14856533
Spending an alarming amount of the household budget on alcohol and having your adoptive son confront you about it makes you an alcoholic, or at least shows a problem with alcohol.
>>
>>14856421
>Abused sleeping pills
The only time I saw the sleeping pills used was before the Terraist attack. If you consider the situation, it might be quite difficult for Yang Wenli to get some sleep otherwise. I don't see the evidence which points towards a problem with sleeping pills

>>
>>14851009
How is he a mary-sue? Yang is, more or less, useless outside of history knowledge and applied battlefield tactics. He barely got by in life and was satisfied with just not failing, always needing others to baby-sit him through life. Julian, despite being the adopted son, acts more like a father and a nanny to Yang. Reading the book: it's made obvious that Yang would have no issue trashing his own house and wearing same rags like some loser NEET, not to mention constantly putting things aside out of lazyiness untill the last second.

Hell, outside the alcoholic issue mentioned here, Wenli doesn't even know how to socially handle himself. From all perspectives, he was nothing short of a loser. Relatable loser, but a loser.

Yeah, one scene that I didn't pay much thought to the first time I saw it but really stuck out to me when I rewatched it with a friend was the part early on when yang doesn't want to go give his speech. When I saw it first I was like "oh, he doesn't want to be some military pawn," but on second viewing there's also undeniablly an element of "why would I leave the house for that"

Is there anything he couldn't do? He's a good fighter pilot, a beast in close axe combat, and looks to be as good a tactician and strategist as Yang was. And honestly his personality seems to consist of, "I'm taking care of my foster father," "I'm going to fuck up the guys who killed my foster father," and "my girlfriend is a German tsundere."

>>14857109

It's true that that's the first and only time you see it happen. LoGH doesn't go into super detail of the daily life of its heroes though, so it's not surprising that such a detail is "sprung" on us.

As usual, the story forces you to read between the lines to actually understand the characters. We already know that Yang is a bit of substance abuser. We know Yang has expressed regret about the consequences of his actions. And now we learned Yang used sleeping pills to get rest. So, he had a prescription for sleeping pills. Might it be that Yang has trouble getting sleep at nights? Why? He's a young guy with no medical conditions.

Well, if we put together everything we know about Yang Wen-Li, I think it becomes pretty apparent that
>Yang has trouble sleeping because of guilt/nightmares
>He has a prescription for sleeping pills to help him get rest
>Knowing he has a habit of using substances at an excess, it's not completely unlikely that Yang also used the sleeping pills a bit more than necessary

With that said, saying he "abused" sleeping pills is unsupported. he might have used them "correctly".

>>14856933

Yeah, because it shows that Yang isn't some flawless ubermench. He's a "real" human being with human emotions, and his strength of character isn't unfailing. He's a flawed person.

He had all the telltale signs of a burgeoning alcoholic. He just died before any of it came to fruition.
>>
>>14856421
Also
>probably killed way more people than hitler
>>
Yang's greatest reason for his success is that everyone he fights just goes full retard in his presence. Like he was the only person in history to ever read a naval strategy book and everyone else is winging it.
>>
>>14857480

No because you'd have to be insane to want his life.
>>
>>14857480
He spends like the first 5-10 episodes being tortured?
If he were a Mary Sue, they'd never show him in a position of weakness like that, and at best would have just been captured by no fault of his own.
>>
>>14859862
>Like he was the only person in history to ever read a naval strategy book and everyone else is winging it.

Wasn't that kind of one of the underlying points?
>>
>>14859943

For a novel series that tries to be a world that even if it isn't 100% realistic, is convincing, it's odd that literal admirals never studied strategy.
>>
>>14859973
Based on the books, the admirals studied strategies to fight each other, their meta strategy evolved to fight based on previously employed meta strategies from their lifetime. Yang, on other hand, employed more traditional strategies that everyone slowly over time neglected. It happens more often with real life historical battles than you think.
>>
>>14860516

Yeah, for instance Napoleon was famous as the greatest general of his time (for a good reason), and he famously stuck mostly to the book.

Of course, Yang is probably more based on Yi Sun-sin than anyone else. Their stories are pretty damn similar.

In a straight fight, the thing that made Yang so amazing was probably that he never made any mistakes. Reinhardt literally one sees Yang ever commit one tactical blunder, and then he becomes so ecstatic that he collapses.
>>
>>14851412
I'm an atheist who's never read the bible or been to church and I know JC lives. He walks out of a cave or some retarded shit. I think that's what Easter is about? Or was it Christmas? Whatever.
>>
>>14861167

He dies and comes back to life 3 days later.

Or he faked his death, but honestly that's a lot of shit to fake.
>>
>>14860516
Famous example in our world is Afghanistan. The Americans thought they could do what the British and Soviets couldn't. Instead they made exactly the same mistakes and fought the same battles.

Why didn't anyone in the Pentagon learn? After Vietnam there were a lot of books written and seminars given at West Point about how to fight an insurgency but nobody bothered to study them.
>>
>>14861180

But the soviets were winning when we got involved because those gunships were a hard counter to everything.
>>
>>14861185

>>
>>14861180

Glass the whole place from orbit? Unleash the Thor's Hammer device on them for maximum dickishness?
>>
>>14861193
>Unleash the Thor's Hammer device

We never actually built that (or so they tell us). It wasn't "cost-effective", the killjoys. DARPA would've loved it.
>>
>>14861185
Well Iran and Pakistan were giving shelter, weapons and training to the Taliban just as the US was doing with the Mujahadeen in the 80s. Life is unfair.
>>
>>14861193
They already tried that in Laos, Cambodia and North Vietnam.

Is blowing up your Xbox because you cannot clear Ninja Gaiden really winning?
>>
>>14861386
>They already tried that in Laos, Cambodia and North Vietnam.

No we didn't, we never tried a "kill fucking everyone" policy.
