Depends on how you do it. Beams should be treated with respect. I really like Amuro and Chars second fight, where Char freaks out a little over how powerful the beam rifle is.

I like both beam and solid projectile weapons, but beam weapons are way OP and I like them when they're fairly rare AND not completely overpowered to the point that one MS with one can change the course of a battle with it.

I gotta admit that one of the fine points of IBO is the fact that there are no beams.

I dislike beam spam. I like a single shot from a beam doing massive damage. Like Amuro one shotting basically any suit during One Year War with his precise aim, or V2 style blow up a dozen suits with one massive beam.

Itano Circus is where it's at as far as spam goes. Missiles are best ballistic.

All I want in my goondamn fights is two robots shooting each other with good ol ballistic weapons.
Beam shit is op and boring to watch, melee weapons tend to have terrible designs and be boring to watch in mecha shows, Gouf custom sword is pretty neat though, I love how it's just a sword shaped club that smashes shit rather than cutting it.

Beams can be fun if they're treated as something special but when they've used every episode it's just lazy.

I like beam stuff when it shows things melting and burning up, not instantly exploding. Like how in Gundam Unicorn when mobile suits would get sliced up, leaving glowing ridges where they were diced.

Otherwise, I like ballistics and missiles more. They usually have cooler sound effects accompanying them in my opinion.

I don't really mind either as long as there's a lot of 'em. I guess solid edges out for all the visceral mechanical stuff. Rotating barrels, ejecting shell casings, loading magazines and all that good shit.

I like a mix. There's a tendency to treat beam weapons as the ultimate in weaponry just because they're cool and futuristic, but realistically there are going to be defenses that ballistics are good against that beams aren't, and vice versa. Different armor materials, different forms of energy shielding, stuff like that. So I think it would be nice to have a situation where a fighting force, if not an individual mecha, needs to have a balanced mixture of beams and bullets and bombs in order to cover all the potential issues.

High caliber balistics for single shooting weapons.
Rapid firing is whatever for me, thou multiple gatlings are fun to watch.
Tuning forks are their own category altogether, something like quantum beam rifle of Lucifer from Macross works great thanks for it's two modes.
As for melee, clubs, mostly. Or Da dao like swords, like those used by chinese in Muv-luv. Inertia is a bitch to stop and kinetic energy transfers nicely to inner working over the armor.
