It's basically a JRPG. Three girls get tossed into a magical fantasy land, they eventually contract with 'rune gods' that manifest as giant robot-like things and at the climax they have magical giant-robot fights.

S2 has more robot action (including a faction with actual robots in a giant battleship) and some trippy "people's emotions change the makeup of this world in real time" stuff.

I generally don't like mecha, but I love Rayearth. The second season was so powerful. The first was good too, but can't really be considered mecha.
