It looks alright, I guess, although I'm not really having a lot of strong feelings either way for it.

Didn't they already do a "stealing the Death Star plans" plot in some game or novel or something?

enough that they had to retcon that the plans were scattered into multiple pieces like the triforce
>>
>>14833057
>No Z-95s in sight
PLEASE, I BEG YOU
>>
>>14833131
Considering that Rebels showed the Rebellion had A-Wings and B-Wings years before ANH kinda makes Z-95s redundant.
>>
Visually incredible. Script sounds like it's gonna be ass though.
>>
>>14833149
I really dislike that retcon.

I get they're recontextualizing the Galactic Civil War around the idea of rebel cells pooling together to tear down the empire, but I liked the idea of RotJ being the point at which off screen windfalls were parlayed into more advanced weapon systems like the B and A to keep the Imps pressured.

The B in particular doesn't work well as a contemporary of the Y considering it's practically everything the Y is but far better at it, hence it works as a next generation gunship.

Then again the old EU just never had the balls to say "yeah we had A's before Endor" and just called them Spearheads.

But I liked the idea of Spearheads being the Z-95 of A-Wings though.
>>
>>14833057
looks super generic and shit
>>
On one hand, this is a lot more visually stunning than episode VII was. Despite their flaws, I loved the visual splendor and scope the PT gave us. VII was obviously trying to distance itself from that, but I felt it went too far. This is different. This feels like a galactic, not just local conflict again... while still being faithful to the OT visuals. I like that mix.

But, I'm also not sure if it feels like a proper Star Wars film. VII definitely did, even if it was a big fat rehash, it still had the beats and style built into it. This feels different, and I'm not sure if I like that yet or not.

Then again, as a confessed fan of many EU works along with clone wars and rebels... I'm sure my tolerance will adjust.
>>
is /m/ the rebellion and the normies are the empire?

For the most part it seems like if it wasn't in an actual movie, it's subject to retcon. We all know the Z-95 and A-Wing/B-Wing stuff from the computer games and West End Games expanded universe stuff, but they're OK with changing that up if they think it makes a better story. Sucks for the purists but I guess it lets them make more stories.
>>
>>14833057
Looks really boring. Oh well.
>>
>>14833339

/m/ is the CIS or whatever they're called.

>>
>T-65s
Awwww yes
>>
>>14833149
Not necessarily, maybe they can't produce A- and B- wings or even X-wings in sufficient numbers on account of not being able to set up permanent production lines that don't get bombed by the Imperial Navy. So their mainstay of fighters could be old Clone Wars vintage Z-95s as shown in TCW, if not stolen TIEs.
>>
>>14833352

Z-95s actually showed up in Clone Wars and could still be around concievably. And the B-Wing we saw was a prototype moreso than a full on set of new units. Infact, there were several references to its development details from old EU material.

Frankly, these retcons really are no different than anything they would've done when the old EU was still around.
>>
I dunno. I can't say I'm really feeling this one. Every single line in that trailer was almost groan-inducing with how cliche it was. "I'm doing this to protect you," "we have hope," that kind of shit.

Visually it looks pretty good though. At the very least I'm expecting the action scenes to be pretty cool.

I hate how they're trying to make it this "Epic" thing.
Star wars never really was about that. Just some kid, a smuggler and a walking carpet getting unintentionally involved in all kinds of shenanigans.
The characters felt real and relatable and so did the dialog. I think the movie actually did kind of okay in this regard but this dialog is the cringiest piece of shit since the prequels, I doubt himself Lucas could do worse.

Why can't we just have have some kid and space cowboys getting involved in all kinds of shenanigans again?

Yes, there are no less than 11 different conflicting stories in which different characters steal the Death Star plans. This is exactly why Star Wars canon needed to be flushed and given structure.

I don't understand people like you. If you care only for the destination, not the journey, why watch movies at all? It's not like you can't tell what's going to happen in 9/10 movies anyway.

>>

Why are you replying to my post? Nothing I said indicated distaste for Katarn. He's in the best Star Wars games, I like him just fine. The fact that his deeds were retconned 9 times over is one of the obvious reasons why order needed to be brought to the continuity.

I've been pretty indifferent to this. TFA really soured me on Disney SW, but this trailer has me (unbegrudgingly) hyped.

The cinematography looks immeasurably less shitty than whatever Abrams's hackjob DoP cooked up.

The PT hasn't aged super well with the CG and all, but at least it's always really cool to look at.
Nothing in TFA came close to the dogfight in AOTC which was a real bummer.
From the looks of this trailer it seems like we'll have a chance to get up on the same level as the Invisible Hand run, and possibly surpass it.
>>
>>14836003
Considering that droid defected to the Rebels, I'd say the Empire discontinued production.

Wait, the Slave 1 pursuit?

I actually put the Falcon's escape from Jakku up there as far as setpiece sequences go, they're both stupid when taken apart and scrutinized but they work very well as sheer spectacle.
>>
>>14836621
The difference is that from behind the scenes stuff for AOTC, the Slave I pursuit was something they came up at the last minute by Lucas. If the sloppy last minute seconds by Lucas at his worst is comparable to Abrams, that doesn't say much for TFA.
>>
>>14836111

You say that like there haven't been a high percentage of shit Star Wars games.

>>14836672

I'd say there were at least a few good games after that personally, even just confining it to Lucasarts stuff (Episode 1: Racer was a good racing game for one), but I wouldn't even count X-Wing v TIE Fighter as good personally, since I don't think it ever really held a spark to either of it's two parent titles. Even Alliance a few years later was better, though that wasn't great either.

TIE pilots don't count.
>>
>>14833149
If they had A-Wings pre-ANH how the hell do they retcon them using X-Wings for the Battle of Yavin? Couldn't they have just fit proton torpedoes onto an A-Wing which trades off some firepower for far greater manuverability and performance?

Donnie Yen is a Force worshipper (not sure if he's Force sensitive) so he might not die immediately against Vader. It'll be bullshit if he last for more than 5 minutes, though.

I don't expect Ma-Rey Sue Mk.II to die though. She'll probably live so we can get Rogue One Two in a few years where she teams up with the Bothans to steal the Death Star II's plans before ROTJ.

Why didn't the Empire keep making these Droidekas??????

Literally the most effective combat droid ever made, has a personal forcefield, transforms to roll mode which makes it faster than other biped droids and humans, also has high energy plasma weapons.
>>
>>14840035

>>14840035
The Empire never made them.
Plus they're expensive, are made by emancipated non-humanoid aliens, and don't do anything special that can't be done by a bunch of samoan stormies.

Remember the largest number of confirmed kills against Jedi have been by Clones shooting them in the back.
>>
>>14840082
>The Empire never made them.

I didn't mean to imply they did, what I implied was they were made by the Trade Federation and that the Empire could have kept making tech that was 18 years old and still effective.
>>
>>14840099
The Trade Federation didn't directly make them either, as far as I recall.

They were bought off of some hyper-warmongering non-humanoid alien race or some shit, and you know that doesn't sit well with the pro-Human agenda of the Empire... unless that's not canon anymore.

And if so, again they don't do anything that can't be done with storm troopers.

That was the way it was before wasn't it? It was only after Endor when the Rebellion became the New Republic that they actually organized into a full conventional military with multiple fleets and armies taking and holding territory.

Which is why I'm so pissed nucanon flushed the opportunity to do some interesting New Republic vs. Empire battles in favor of just having one big battle followed by 30 years of fucking nothing
>>
I guess I'm the only one that was hyped about it since the start.
I wasn't very excited with 7 but I like everything I've seen so far with Rogue One.
>>
>>14840319
I always thought that the Rebellion as we saw it in the films was the totality of the Rebellion, with it growing after each successful victory. The rebel cell idea was completely alien to me until the current canon started running with it.
>>
>>14840111
>pro-Human agenda of the Empire
An EU invention which was never alluded to in canon.
>>
>>14840360

Old canon had it a lot. The explanation as to why the Rebel base at Yavin could only scramble something like 30 fighters was because it was mostly a command and control center. In other parts of the galaxy you'd have small cells of similar size aimed at hit and run attacks on convoys or other soft targets.

Just look at Empire Strieks Back. On Hoth you've got (some of) the Rebel command, but elsewhere beyond the galactic plane the rebel fleet is staying safe. Endor was the first time all these cells and ships were gathered together, which was the point of Palpatine's plan.
>>
>>14840464
>An EU invention which was never alluded to in canon.

>no alien Imperial Navy personnel whatsoever in any of the movies
>Where are you taking this... thing?

The space racism aspect also created a concrete reason for the Rebellion to exist beyond abstract ideas like "democracy".

Death Star construction was moved from Geonosis once the station was able to move under it's own power; the Empire covered up the initial work by sterilizing the planet. It's mentioned in both Rebels and the recent comics.

Whoever approved that design needs to be shot. The Sun Crusher actually sounded a lot more menacing on paper, like a super-armored space tank, not a flying fucking dreidel like in that picture.

This thing even has a smaller field of vision than the other TIEs. Basically the only direction you can see clearly is straight ahead.

I'm going to give this new stars war a chance but if they do it a third time I'll drop it for sure. Should know better than to simply give the fans what they think they want.

>Clones shooting them in the back

Only very special circumstances made that possible.
>>
>>14844134
Like treason?
Because from my point of view it's the shooting in the back that did the job.
>>

but the empire was basically evil white human oppressors. Sorry that it hits too close to home, champ.
>>

You're really stupid.
>>
>>14842662
And they can scrap all of that if they want to. But not the movies. Only movies matter.
>>
>>14845221

Actually they can't scrap The Clones Wars. They're contractually obligated to keep it and the prequel movies canon. Lucas could have scrapped any of it if he'd wanted though. It's not like that makes either of them only limited to the movies regardless.

Get a job, darkie.
>>
>>14843079
It was true that the Imperials were white in the original trilogy, but in The Force Awakens they made a point of the New Order being multicultural.

Finn might not count because he's a victimized brainwash-ee. But there was some not-white girl on dispatching, or whatever we call that job that Fraw Bow did, and I don't think we have reason to believe that those guys were brainwashed. For that matter, even that main white New Order guy who wasn't Kylo Ren might've been indoctrinated much like the stormtroopers.

It just goes to show that George Lucas was a white guilt masochist, while J. J. Abrams is fighting the SJW menace.
>>
>>14845942
>Multiethnic, not multicultural. I'm not aware of any evidence that humans of different skin tones tend to come from different cultures in the galaxy.

The human supremacy aspect of the Empire was something the movies didn't really touch on, that I hear the Old EU addressed. It would be interesting if any EU stuff addressed different human skin colors. Probably stupid, but interesting.
>>
>>14845942
I just thought it was because Lucas came from a generation where white men were both the good and bad guy.
>>
>>14845955
It was a joke, because I thought we'd expect Abrams to be more diversity-focused than Lucas, so I was describing it backwards. But then I remembered Lucas directed Red Tails. But that shouldn't count, should it.
>>
>>14838346
I remember people, the people who care about this sort of thing, got briefly butthurt when they revealed a black woman side character.

And that she was an Imperial. Had a hearty chuckle. I really need to get around to reading Lost Stars, it sounds right up my alley even if it's a YA novel. It's apparently up there in quality for the new books too, according to the /co/ general anyway.

It's not that much different than other Ties. The pilot isn't sitting right up besides the window anyway so they can only see above or forward.
But if the old TIE Fighter game is anything to go by, there's plenty of equipment to help orient a pilot towards their target regardless if they can actually see them with their eyes.
>>
>>14842995
>Striker
So is it better equipped for dual role air superiority and ground attack missions, or is Striker just a fancy name like Interceptor?
>>
>>14846006
Equipment can fail or get knocked out by ion weapons, there is no real substitute for a Mark One Eyeball at the end of the day. This is why the F-35 is at a disadvantage in a close turning dogfight.

Most kinds of TIEs that are hit by ion stuff usually just stop working altogether.

That aside, there's always the Empire's trusty gunboat. They actually have a functional canopy for the discerning pilot and isn't some cheaply made obscuring ball with bare engines bolted on.
>>
>>14848871
>there is no real substitute for a Mark One Eyeball
Besides the Force. One of the interesting concepts that came out of the post-NJO was stealth fighters that were most effective when operated by Jedi because they can switch off all sensors for zero emissions running without going completely blind thanks to the Force.

Far as we're aware. Disney's been finding weird ways to re-incorporate fan favorites into their canon.

If Thrawn can make it in, Katarn's probably on the roster of characters they're looking at.

Honestly, I'd be happy with a reboot of the Jedi Knight series, with Jedi Outcast/Academy as the inspiration.
>>
If they wanted to make a movie about a heist why did they need to give it the name "Rogue One" which is already associated not with thieves but with an X-wing squadron?
>>
>>14845942
The Imperials were white because Lucas was shooting his film in 1970s England. He was on a tight budget and the UK was going through a terrible economic depression at the time so he was able to use Shakespeare actors for an American kids movie and pay them peanuts.

I thought this was common knowledge?

I've got a bad feeling about this.

The only good thing about this flick seems to be Forrest Whitaker; wherever his lazy eye points, I will go.

Never really been a constant in Star Wars. That's a funny thing to comment on.
>>

I get the feeling from the trailer that the reshoots have pretty much done away with the original idea of a gritty war movie. The only tonal question I have is whether the action scenes, which would have been shot in the doom 'n gloom phase, are going mix work well with the new lighter-toned footage.

How secret can the Death Star plans really be, given that the millions of workers they need to build the thing will each have access to at least partial plans with which to build it?

It's not like druids don't exist in Star Wars anyways. You could use millions of them and not really worry about any blabbing. It's possible one would reveal it, but unlikely.
>>
>>14857737
>repeat narratives

Godzilla, Gundam and James Bond are much worse offenders of this than Star Wars.
>>
>>14861448

ah, so THAT was the mystery
>>
>>14833057

I'll watch it because I have Star Wars stockholm syndrome.

Loved episode 4, 5 and 6 growing up. Episodes 1, 2 and 3 were pure garbage and I hate that they exist because I'll never really love Star Wars again after those filthy cash grabs. Episode 7 was somewhere in the middle for me. I have a feeling Rogue One will be abit better than 7.
>>
>>14861448
>not really worry about any blabbing.
Yeah, I dunno. Have you known a droid to not be a babbling loudmouth? Look at the battle droids. They're supposed to be soldiers, and they're always accidentally letting the secret plans out and screwing up in general.

Which is fine. The day that droids act like sensible robots is the day Star Wars is dead.
