Has /m/ seen Makazuki?
It's a pretty fun Tokusatsu show made by Keita Amemiya and written by Toshiki Inoue (When he was still good).
Production values were way higher than those of Kamen Rider and Super Sentai at the time, and it's intended for an older audience too
Whole thing is subbed by Hi no Tori fansubs and can be found on Youtube.

I've been meaning to watch it and have had it downloaded for years.
>>14832185
Then now is the perfect time. The enemy of the first episode is a giant watermelon
Oh yeah, I love it! I remember re-uploading the whole thing with bootleg subs when megaupload went down. Good stuff, awesome monsters. /m/ never got much into it though

>Has /m/ seen Makazuki?
No, but now I will. Thanks OP.
>>14832355
Nice. Weird, /m/ likes Garo, so I thought that this show'd be more popular around here.
>>14832444
Sure. Be prepared for some badass robot and monster design.

I'm quite certain that in most cases being part of a big franchise contributes more to popularity than the involvement of a specific creator.

I remember a few threads popping up after HiT finished subbing it. I've been meaning to get around to watching it for a few years, but still haven't yet.
Fucking rad OP, though. Dokken is the shit.

It can be found on Nyaa for convenience, thanks to a generous anon (because Hi no Tori are so old-fashioned that they don't do torrents): https://www.nyaa.se/?page=view&tid=314721
Downloading it now. This is going to be my first sentai(not including Power Rangers).
It's a fantastic crash course on Tokusatsu.
There's an enormous mix of influences: Tetsujin/Giant Robo for the main robot, retro-styled "real robots", silly giant monsters, Ultraman-style jet squadrons, Super Sentai-influenced kung-fu and 70s low-budget show homages (off the top of my head)
Pic related: I absolutely adore these clunky mechas
>>14836235
kinda makes me want to see it in Super Robot Wars now
>>14836235
The retro mecha were really cool.
>>14832938
Hey, thanks!
Wait, there's only 6 episodes?
>>14838603
well each of those "episodes" is about an hour or more each, so it's more like a mini-series of movies than a standard show
>>14838603
It's an Amemiya work before Garo, those things are always at longest 6 hours worth of episodes.

Not SRW, but there was almost a game for PS2 from the makers of Robot Alchemic Drive / Remote Control Dandy / Tetsujin 28 / Earth Defense Force.

>we live in a universe where this didn't come to fruition
There you have it boys. This is purgatory.

>RAD almost make a whole new genre of mecha game
i feel sad no one ever dare to make anything innovative in this AAA era

EDF 4.1 keeping the giant clunky robot dream alive.
Never heard of it before now, but sounds good to me. I'll take a look at the series when I can.

>main mode with Mikazuki, traditional third-person Sandlot mecha gameplay and alternate first-person cockpit mode
>flight with Mikazuki Gai as in PS2 Tetsujin
>Gekkouki as assist mecha, playable in alternate mode
>fighting sub-idiom hordes like in EDF, but as a beat'em up with AIT while Mikazuki fights in the background
>pilotable AIT jets like EDF's helis
>black-clad guy as beat'em up/fighting game boss
>playable idoms/Spartacus/Shingetsu in VS mode
>training/challenge mode against the ball-like robot
>secret extra mode, simplified beat'em up with Wonder 7
>hypotheses about things that will never exist
Life is unfair, man.

such good track
Watched episode 1. That was fun and great. I'll definitely be watching the rest
Thanks, OP. Without this thread, I'd never have known this show even exists.
Do you wanna eat watermelon after watching that terrifying monster?
>>14844773Yes
Just got done with the first episode. Pretty good all around and the suit fights were pretty cool. I'll probably chip away at the rest slowly over the next few weeks.
Cheers, OP. I'll swing by with thoughts as I go.

Very nice. Thanks.
It's always cool to see Amemiya drawings.
Just binged all six episodes.
I felt like they left a lot more loose ends than they intended, but then again Keita Amemiya made it and I don't think he's ever fully explained anything for anything he's ever done.
I liked the action when it actually happened, but I also felt like they were intentionally shortselling themselves. Episode 1 had a Tsuburaya-tier monster suit, but then the IDOMs in 2 and 3 are the same shit.
THen there's the AIT's sentai which gets three whole actual fights on their own (One in episode 1, one in episode 2, and one in episode 6) but otherwise just sort of... I dunno, exist. And in their final fight, their guns suddenly became swords without any explained context.
They also didn't even give much in terms of good naming. Zamu and Torupa only have their names mentioned a total of twice and didn't really identify what they are, just that they're from another world's kingdom that made Mikazuki and Shingetsu. Hell, Torupa barely got any action! His camera monster which also sort of goes unexplained (and suddenly changes weapons twice in the span of one fight) gets more fighting in his system.
It's a fun thing to enjoy with your mind slightly turned off, but I ended up just asking more questions. Then again, Inoue wrote it so this all kind of doesn't surprise me.
On the other hand, Mikazuki's design was a bad-ass retake on Amemiya's archetypical "broad helmet obscuring face on bulky dude" design while also taking on design motifs from Giant Robo. I also liked all the random floating what looked like Sanskrit everywhere, and the giant hand forcefield. And Shingetsu's design really does scream "Prototypical Mecha Garo."
Definitely a good watch though, my only wish is that of the $9M budget, it wasn't half-spent on CG, and instead spent hiring a few guys from Tsuburaya to help out.
Also, Kazeo's one of the few kid protagonists in mecha who's pretty good. Even if he does look kinda... I dunno. It looks like he has Down's.

>Makazuki
Just watched the first episode and came to bump the thread because this is some fucking tight shit with /ss/ vibes and I'll be damned if the thread dies before I can discuss how hard I want that strong Generalissimo to be all over the bullied boy.
Also the Mikazuki feels very fucking heavy. The practical effects definitely shine a lot even if all the CG and green screen use is horrendous. Really like the miniatures for the town and how they break, especially in the scene where Mikazuki almost kills the highschooler pilot (didn't care for her crotch shot, though).
Really fucking solid pilot all in all.
Mikazuki reminds me a lot of Master Gundam
