The US DOE found Godzilla and Maki was the chief researcher on the project. He made off with a load of the DOE's research material, which is why the CIA/NSA are after him

>>14830233
I knew precisely what to expect because I read the OP pastebin which splurges over that scene, and went in with high expectations, and it somehow managed to surpass even those expectations.

The music and lighting really does the trick. When you watch the webms we have of him turning his head to hit the PM's chopper his movement looks really unnatural and bad CG like, but in the cinema the music and atmosphere just overwhelms you.

Just saw it.
That was fucking awesome. The first atomic breath scene (or was it plasma? My friend said it was plasma) was the perfect blend of horror and amazing.
The first form rubber suit looks really cgi at first, and the subtitles are really fast, but the first starts looking better and I got used to the latter.
Still felt bad for Godzilla, though that tail looked like it had half human-half gojira mutants on it.

On the other hand, two guys sitting next to us were laughing and coughing at nothing the whole time. The theater was packed and smelled a bit too.
sorry if post was too much of a blogpost

I've already seen it twice, going again tomorrow.

The political commentary was very heavyhanded and the movie ran a little long, but otherwise it blew my mind. I'm a Godzilla fan before a fan of Anno, but I loved what he's added to Godzilla lore. Gotta love the new Godzilla life-cycle.

i was sitting next to a guy who brought his little brother and they were discussing all the old movies before it started

but while the movie was playing he was asking his bro a lot of questions, and generally just looked bored until Goji came back and he would prop up in his seat

felt kinda bad for him, but he's got to have the patience for these movies by now if he's watched the classics
>>

>>
>>14832233
There was a surprising amount of casuals (or at least what I assume) bringing their children into the theatres.

I always wondered if they were bored of the non-action scenes. It's not only pretty wordy and takes up a significant part of the film, but a lot of it political/complex in subject, and something they probably wouldn't understand too much of.

The people in my theatre fucking loved the film. For the first time I witnessed people clapping/cheering after the film the done (also the Godzilla fans with the Toho logo at the start), and I'm not even American.
>>
>>14832245
That's what I thought as well.

>remember watching Home Alone 2 back in the 90s on the big screen and getting out of the movie
>see kids mess around in the local arcade
>older brother appears and says "Kevin is setting up the traps"
>see the kids go back in the theater

Kids never have a patience when it comes to a slow buildup

One of my favorite things about the film was that Godzilla had to learn everything he did in it.
Walking, his atomic breath, all of it. You actually did get the feeling of a child in a new world. A horrifying, all-powerful child.

My current Top 5

1. Godzilla (1954)
2. Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla (1974)
3. Shin Godzilla (2016)

I just got back, will certainly enjoy watching it again on Saturday. Pretty much anything I add praise wise has already been said.

The only jarring CGI moments that caught my attention were the skin texture when Babby changed into teenager. and also those few steps he took before going to sleep to recharge the beam.

Nothing else really rattled me. You lads?

Mrs. America: "Ch-chotto, watashi no buubu ni katte ni don't touch shinaide!!"

So from my understanding. Godzilla was an extinct animal that was found by the US feeding on a US illegal nuclear dumping ground.

Goro Maki was the head of the project researching the creature for the United States which they had captured, he then, because his wife was killed by Radiation tests or something, wanted revenge on Japan, so he stole the animal godzilla, after learning of it's potential, and released it in Tokyo bay and commits suicide.

I get that part.

Still confused on the tail ending though.

>>
>>14833154
I thought he fused with gojira
quite montrous though, makes shin gojira more than just a mutant dinosaur in an inconvenient place
>>
>>14833154

Godzilla was originally a colony of mixotrophs that when exposed to nuclear waste as food started to evolve by imitating the apex predator of its surroundings, that's why the form we first see is akin to sharks and eels and it becomes more human as the movie goes on as he sees us as the strongest species.

His DNA is so advanced that, unlike us, he can evolve at a much more faster rate to accomodate to his surroundings.
>>
>>14833154
I just took it as Maki having discovered Godzilla's existence, being shut down by the Americans about it, and then he left a "HERE'S WHAT YOU CAN DO WHEN/IF IT GETS WORSE. FUCK ALL OF YOU" and kills himself

The tail thing is just a sign that Godzilla's current form was NOT the end of its evolution
>>
>>14833156

Remember earlier when they realize it produces asexually and will attempt to "seed" itself across the planet? The tail was a sign that there's probably still some activity going on there.

This is correct. Also, the nuclear waste was from an old underwater dumping ground used by multiple countries.

To sum it up from multiple posts by other people:

>Godzilla absorbs other life-forms and becomes like them. Maki knew this through his research, and by committing suicide by casting himself into the ocean at Godzilla, he made Godzilla grow legs and head to Tokyo (since his thoughts were also absorbed) and start to sprout humans. This was the revenge and test he was babbling about in his suicide note.

How the hell does Rotten Tomatoes define fresh/rotten anyway?

I'm seeing obviously bad reviews marked as fresh while good reviews are marked rotten.
>>
>>14833345
As far as I know, a 6/10 and above is fresh . If there's not a score, the critic decide wethever it's fresh or rotten.
>>14833344
It's not official.
>>
>>14833351
They're ones without scores, yeah, but some of those are weird obscure shit that I don't think the critics themselves put up, so how are those determined? And the Japan Times one, there is no fucking way that guy is saying it's rotten.

>>14833344

>>
>>14833370

Rotten tomatoes doesn't want this movie to be fresh or rated higher than the american ones so they rig it.
>>
>>14831218
Yeah. Sound effects and a good chunk of the music is pulled straight from the early films.

>>14832102

So, even with his sheer power and might, humanity still managed to bring Godzilla down.

>>
>>14833374
Looks like it's already rated higher though (2014 is 74 critic/66 audience, Shin is 76/80).

And that doesn't explain how there are obviously bad reviews marked as fresh.

I'm not complaining about the score being rigged or anything, just saying that it looks like their system is kind of shitty.
>>
>>14833384

The fact that many reviews are actually tomatoes by the page standards but still count as vomit is what makes me wonder if they are trying to boycott it out of jealously.

Dissmiss RT. It's a site filled with wannabee critics looking for the next "perfect" Hollywood blockbuster. I am not saying, however, that all of them are like that. There's alot of critics on there who really do give fair and unbiased reviews. But for the most part I don't pay mind to RT. It is sad though that the masses look souly toward Imdb and RT for professional reviews, but that's the age we live in. Like I always say, see it for yourself and then judge it.
>>
>>14833342
No, but anno made him anyways.
>>
>>14833440
See, I usually look at RT if I can before a movie to get a general sense of where my expectations will fall. But even before seeing most movies you can read the snippets of their reviews and get a general sense of how pretentious the reviewer is. They do like to review every single movie on the "does it deserve an Oscar or not" scale, which obviously you go into seeing any Godzilla movie for fun not for the awards it won't receive. However, I think this is just for fear of their careers being jeopardized by either not seeming professional or people wondering why in the hell they get paid so much to watch movies.

Anno won't be involved though and in all honesty, everything good about Shin is from him. There's no way they'd be able to make another of the same level without him. Unless they do something like get Urobuchi (he's doing the anime) or Oshii (who has a cameo in the film) to handle it, chances are that if they make a new one it'll be just as shitty as the average Millenium film. Hell it'd probably be worse if it were a sequel since it'd be a sequel to THIS.
>>
>>14833812
>everything good about Shin was from him
>Evangelion theme played five times
>Cinematography that you could mistake yourself as watching an live action Evangelion film
>random close-ups to tank treads and people's face

Nah, all the stated above which were Anno direction gave me migraine, but I won't be a retard and say everything Anno did was shit; cause st that point I'd say his screenwriting was shit (it wasn't).
>>
>>14833780
I mean honestly not many
Take a look at Godzilla Vs Gigan, that movie is a fucking travesty (even though I love it) the series has had it's blunders but it's resilient.
>>
>>14833812
I agree with you to a degree but good is subjective when it comes to Godzilla, I like most of the millennium films but they're not without their flaws. I do agree that Anno did a big part in making this as well received as it was but when it comes down to it, the people behind the director really put the show together. I have faith that Toho will find a worthy director.

Remove the often unnecessary stock footage and Godzilla vs Gigan is fairly solid. The human characters are likeable, plot engaging thanks to the aforementioned characters and its simplicity, and the monster stuff is good fun (except for Godzilla and Ghidorah not looking too hot).

>>
>>14833832
Well, regardless of what you may think of the previous films, it's a fact that it's THIS film that did ridiculously well, and that's the entire film is drenched in Anno. And Anno has already said that this was a one time thing, so the next film, if they make one, won't be him.

I'm just saying that I won't get my hopes up.

That being said however, Anno and then Urobuchi shows that they might be taking a more liberal stance to Godzilla now and might be getting another anime director next, and that might work out.

I'm at that uneasy point where I really want to see the movie because I put so much energy into keeping up with it, yet I also feel burned-out from all the spoilers. Off too watch shin goji really excited /m/ haven't felt like this since legendary Godzilla and Godzilla 2000.
>>
Just got back from the theater. It dragged on in the middle and didn't need to be 2 hours long, but it was pretty well done. The main thing I liked was that the human characters didn't piss me off like in the Legendary movie.
>>
>That sound effect whenever Goji fires a beam
Gave me chills every time. I need that sound effect.
>>
Do you guys think Shin should get a sequel?
I think it would be really cool to see our current cast of characters have to deal with a new kaiju threat, which would eventually lead them to allowing Godzilla's reawakening.
There's so much potential with Godzilla evolutions too.
>>14835131
That's what I was thinking.
>>
>>14835201
I don't think Anno would come back. If they could get Oishii to do it it would be interesting but without Anno I don't think there's any interest. I only bring up Mamoru because of his cameo

>>
>>14835210
there is interest but I think most people knew Anno would just be a one and done for the franchise, I mean they picked him up so that the movie would be a hit and it is, they just have to figure out how to go on without him, I don't think it's impossible, it will give a chance for other people to try to step up and could make Japan a serious competitor for worldwide cinema with the step-up that Anno left them.

There were a bunch of scenes with relevant dialogue that was omitted or awkwardly phrased. Titles were missing but that was probably due to space issues as even the Japanese names were freaking huge.

>No

More unclear on the origin. They theorize he's an extinct animal.

>No

Yes, this is literally stated in the movie he was found feeding on illegally dumped US waste. This is why in the movie the characters can go "Thank god we can blame this one on the US".

>Which they had captured
Unclear, but they were researching him.

>So he stole the animal godzilla and released it in Tokyo Bay as revenge.

Movie is unclear on this, but leans to yes. Since Godzilla first spawns under Maki's boat.

Jesus did you even fucking watch the movie?
>>
>>14832108
>Were some shots by a really good VFX studio and some by another and they didn't share assets?

The film has a budget of 10 million.

More likely the saved most of the rendering power they could afford on a rendering farm for the big battle in the middle and the end.

CG is very expensive, not so much building the models, but rendering can take days for a single frame, renting out farms for this costs millions.
>>
>>14835211
They theorize he could evolve wings to attack other countries, since he is evolving to become the perfect life form.

The end shows that really, his next stage of evolution was evolving into humanoids, as humanoid cooperation is the next "perfect form". Or that's what I and my friends got from it.

Maybe the Man-Gojis grow into smaller forms of Godzilla, and the sequel/franchise follows the offshoot Godzillas instead of the "Shin" Godzilla.
>>
>>14835599
There are a few instances where the subtitles cut the dialogue too short, take too much liberty with the translation, or omit an English word that the characters say. Not too many though.
>>
>>14830197
What's weird is that Shin could have been killed by nukes. It wasn't depicted as a purely wrong option since he was in the process of growing wings with which he could use to attack other countries in the world.

NYC anon here. The movie theater in Times Square has an area in the back where I had no problem recording some scenes on my Galaxy S6. Subs were viewable and audio was crisp.

Sadly my phone didn't have enough space. I plan on recording the movie when I go again on Saturday. Cleared up my phone memory.

I will upload it via MEGA. Hopefully some anons can create a torrent for it.

My late review:
I loved it, it was the right amount of Serious, Corny, and fun that most Godzilla have been and should be.

I expected only five or so people in the Theater for the film, but got nearly a "Sold Out" audience and managed to get lucky enough to find two seats in the top mid row for my dad and myself.
Everyone was very respectful in terms of it being a Subbed movie and no one bitched because they had to read, people were laughing or quiet based on a scene.

The movie itself was great, but felt odd and different. I haven't watched any type of Japanese film that wasn't Toku related, but the way the human scenes and transitions were done was alien to me.
It was like, shot of Godzilla, Human scene, boardroom shot, Humans again, something random, then back to humans, all within a span of a moment, a minute, or two.

Didn't feel any attachment to the human characters in the movie, but I didn't hate them and it was like watching a Ant farm version of CSPAN trying to deal with a monster "Attack".

Godzilla was perfect, and honestly the real victim in the film. He didn't do anything wrong, with the only deaths and destruction being unintentional or right after being provoked. Something keep giving me the vibe that Godzilla's existence was similar to "Frankenstein's Monster", but either I missed something or interpreted wrong.

My only gripes about the film was the "American" girl who keep speaking random English, and the other "American" Characters. She sounded like she was trying to be "Hip and Cool" but speaking both, and the other Americans sounded as if they were reading their lines of the script while recording on a Iphone and on the spot.

Do I want a Sequel? Depends.
The movie worked well with what it was, but trying it again would be like playing Russian Roulette twice in a row.
The movie was a wonderful set up and a replacement for 1954 as a "Origin point" for future series, but for a direct sequel it's iffy.

>>
>>14836066
Shin has more destructive capabilities, but Legendary's more agile, and much more durable. Legendary Goji could tank nukes.
>>
>>14836481
Shin might be able to adapt pretty quickly to Legendary after watching him a bit though.
Would it be cheating to show him Legendary's movie before the match?
>>
>>14836483
I would say so.

Really, it comes down to if Legendary can kill Shin fast enough, before Shin can adapt. Based on what we saw, Legendary Goji could probably rip into Shin Goji, though I'm more skeptical about the effectiveness of his atomic breath. Legendary's speed and strength seem his main strength here.

But Shin Goji is adaptable, and can probably survive a lot of phsyical damage. If Shin Goji can survive long enough to adapt to Legendary's ripping and tearing, there's not much Legendary Goji can do. But with THAT being said, I have trouble imagining a scenario where Shin Goji could really hurt Legendary Goji. His big ultimate attack that left him comatose for weeks was barely nuke-tier, and Legendary Goji is a confirmed nuke-tanker, not to mention his healing factor/recharge period far outpaced Shin Goji's nap after destroying tokyo.

Essentially, it either ends quickly in Legendary Goji's favor, but if it drags on long enough it becomes a stand off. Maybe with enough time Shin Goji pulls out some weird, unseen mutation to pull the victory. Maybe he learns that blood coagulation trick as a weapon or something.
>>
>>14836550
Have we really seen any upper limit to Shin's lasers though? It's not like they failed to slice through anything, so that leaves some ambiguity.

The need to recharge is definitely a big glaring downside though, no way around that.

Depends on how hot the Purple beam was.

If the beam was stronger it would have a shorter time frame to use it, and with G14 being able to move quickly it depends on how accurate the beam is, and the chances of it missing G14.
I'd say that while Purple they would be enough to push back G14 or at worse burn him.

-G14's tail had enough force behind it to knock Male Muto through a support beam, and topple a building double his size down.
-Since G14's breath was able to scorch and knock back the female Muto with her outer layer of skin, while burning through her insides(soft tissue)

Plus in theory, we haven't seen G14's full array of abilities or him at his best yet.
What we have seen is G14's stamina.
>Chases down Male Muto to Hawaii, Fights him.
>Male flies off, Godzilla chases him to San Fran, and battles Male again.
>Confronts Male and Female in San Fran, battles both, and uses his power source as a weapon three times.
During that span, G14 only had rested once before the final battle(The skip between Male Muto fight 2 and final battle), and a quick rest before finishing off Female Muto.

Saw it last night.

It was awesome, and the part where Yaguchi angrily chugs a water bottle to calm himself down was weirdly hilarious.

Beam never missed, and considering how flexible that tail I think he could hit anything he wants with ease. Think biggest question is how strong it is.

As for G14 surviving a nuke, that was an old school nuke at ground level so not the strongest thing, its hot and has some force behind it put it doesn't take much to block it

I've watched 6 other godzilla movie besides Shin so far, and I'm gonna try and watch most or all of them.
GMK used to be my #1, but Shin replaced it.

That depends on which way you look at it. The movie states that they used older, less efficient nukes, but the actual footage was from Castle Bravo, the largest nuke ever detonated by the US. So just how bad of a nuke LegenGoji was able to tank is up for debate, but still, tanking a nuke is nothing to scoff at especially considering it's not like he was somewhere in the blast radius, that thing was right in his face.
But still, I don't know how he'd fare against ShinGojis beam. It certainly looks powerful but considering it's radiation, it's possible it wouldn't hurt LegenGoji as bad as we think.
Simple fact is, LegenGs hand-to-hand fighting is clearly superior, but can he get close enough?
