It's more of a "The Japanese government is comically ineffective at getting anything done in regards Godzilla/natural disasters because of how constraining the post-WW2 constitution is" type of thing or something.

Is it just me or is the response to Godzilla much less than in the previous movies? We see a few jets, some tanks, artillery but back in the older films they're pulled out whole armies of tanks, fleets and huge numbers of planes against him.
>>
>>14824326

Because that is the point, Japan has almost no tanks or weapons to defend itself and can't respond well to situations like a Godzilla or North Korea invading. They can't make a formal army and depend on a small self defense force and help from foreigners.

The movie is realistic as fuck in that aspect.
>>
>>14824326
It looks about as big as it is normally, from what I've seen so far, they send jets, cobra helicopters, apaches, and a large group of tanks

Only difference is that they're in waves instead of one group
>>
>>14824338
But the maser tanks.

Won't anyone think of the maser tanks?
>>
>>14824346

This is not that kind of a Godzilla movie, but expect to see them in the following movies, maybe Urobuchi's futuristic anime movie will have them next year.
>>

I looked at Orlando, there's not a whole lot, they're 7, 715, 730, or 8

8 at Artegon on International might give the most time for people to show up, but it's the showing in their doubleplus theater that costs $14 online.
Artegon 730 is $10
Regals run around $13, except for
Regal Oviedo Mall Stadium 22 which is only $7 for some reason.

Not to mention one of them was all sorts of what (calling the legendary reboot the "2015 reboot", calling the 80s as one of his "lighter hearted eras").

One said the effects look like their not made to impress, but as opposed to what? Mad max was like the only impressive looking big movie of the past 2 years, every other big blockbuster like a superhero movie has looked standard or average (or terrible like independance day 2)

I believe the later parts is what breaks the film for people. I feel that's when the film gets too focused on the politics than, you know, dealing with Godzilla. The human parts are good, but I can agree with James that it got a bit tedious waiting for goji.

A shame, because the start and middle are paced nicely. It didn't feel like the wait for the 2nd landing was too long in repeated viewings. I don't think this is the "2014 killer", so feel free to disregard me.

Now we wait for Kong.

Watched it. It's a militaristic right-wing mess about how great the JSDF is and how they should rearm Japan, that takes every chance it has to insult the US, and depicts women as either sociopaths (the minister and the scientist) or drooling idiots (the "American" lady who can't speak English) while all the problems are solved by tall clever handsome supercompetent men. It's misogynistic to the core and echoes all the problems in Japanese society, especially in the mindset of shut-in loser otaku like the director, Anno. One of the worst movies I've ever seen, period. It's not even a real kaiju movie, because 99% of the film is just Anno soapboxing his politics using bad actors as mouthpieces. There's barely any acting, because the people in the film just constantly spew out non-stop political rhetoric, which takes the place of any form of plot. What little monster action there is in the film is abyssmal- Godzilla's first form is hilariously out of place and despite being CG somehow manages to look like a bad puppet from a black and white era film. The CG in general is pathetic, and what little practical effects there are looks like a child playing with his toy trains. Godzilla himself starts off looking intimidating enough but falls victim to the bad CG when he starts moving faster and shooting lasers at the beginning of the second act. The film has no climax either, as the biggest confrontation is midway through the film, while the final confrontation is done by force-feeding the big lizard some sort of chemical through giant straws mounted on cement trucks. It's so cheap that it's just sad. I am very disappointed.

One of the pillars of the Godzilla community.

>Norman England is a life-long Godzilla fan and former reporter for Fangoria magazine who has spent months on “Godzilla” film sets and saw “Shin Godzilla” last month at a special industry screening. He notes a dramatic departure in the new film from the series’ traditional pacifistic stance.

In fact, all of the pillars, James Rolfe, Ed Godziszewski, Norman England, August Ragone, Jim Ballard, and JR Lipartito, don't like Shin Godzilla.

Norman England (born April 24, 1959) is a film director, actor and film reporter based primarily in Japan. As a reporter he has extensively covered the Millennium Godzilla movies and the new wave of Japanese horror. To date he is the only non-Japanese to have worn the iconic Godzilla suit during production.[citation needed] He directed his first film The iDol in 2005. He emigrated to Japan in 1993 and soon established himself as a writer of the kaiju movie genre. In 1998, he spent a week on the set of George A. Romero's television commercial for the Capcom video game Resident Evil 2, where he met Anthony Ferranti who introduced him to the editors of Fangoria magazine.[citation needed] In 1999, England became the Japan correspondent for Fangoria, through which he became the first westerner to write about the new wave of Japanese horror movies in the mainstream press.[according to whom?] During this time he has also written for publications including Hobby Japan, Japanzine, Starlog, Flix, Japanese Giants, and The Japan Times.[citation needed]

As he is based in Japan, England has been able to spend much time on the sets of the films themselves[citation needed], often logging days beyond simple reporter visits[citation needed]. He spent more than 100 days on set of the Millennium Godzilla series of movies produced between 1999 and 2004[citation needed], including the 2001 movie Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack[citation needed] on which he visited the set almost continuously from April to October[citation needed] and became the only non-Japanese to have worn the Godzilla suit while the a movie was actively in production.[citation needed]

Some other reviewer actually went and asked him to elaborate on the negative review he gave the film and he said

>“This is the first film in the series to go for the jugular in trying to elicit rah-rah support for the military and sympathy for the government,” England says, likening the film’s not-so-subtle nationalism to the blatant flag-waving found in Roland Emmerich’s 1996 sci-fi epic “Independence Day.” "Godzilla was originally imagined as a metaphor for the horrors of war and the devastation war brings to people."

You are seriously conflating what would be seen as militaristic in other countries and what is militaristic in a Japanese context.

The point about direct military force achieving nothing or that they emphasize the importance of disaster relief don't actually matter... A lot of right wings don't hold the belief that the JSDF is powerful, but rather that they are underpowered. That's one of the main beliefs behind the movement to amend Article 9 - the JSDF as it is isn't strong enough.

The fact that the JSDF exists at all is a matter of controversy, and would be a bigger controversy than they are if they weren't useful for disaster relief. The disaster relief aspect is a major argument for the existence of the JSDF, so emphasizing that point like they do in this movie is not an anti- but rather, if anything, a pro-militaristic talking point.

Then you have the rousing speech before the climax... Where the main character basically tells the camera that the JSDF is the hope and future of Japan. That was an extreme statement that I have to say caught me a bit off guard.

In general, the JSDF is portrayed in a very positive light in this movie. Even though the direct attack fails, they are depicted as trying their best which counts for a lot in Japanese culture, and it is still them that does most of the work for, and put their lives on the line for, the final operation that actually succeeds.

Now the JSDF actually has recruitment posters with Shin Goji on them. The JSDF thinks this is a pro-military movie. You'd have to be pretty blind to Japanese politics if you think this wasn't a pro-military movie.

The prime minister is extremely indecisive about order the helicopters to open fire. This is because Japan has a peace clause in its constitution and takes weapon usage really seriously. In real life, this is a major political topic in Japan right now as the very right-wing Prime Minister Abe wants to revise the constitution to give Japan the most military autonomy it’s had since WWII.

The US military offers to step-in and help, and after some hesitation the Prime Minister agrees. This harkens to another major political hot topic in real-life Japan today: the right-wing government and its supporters feel that Japan is overly dependant on the US military and needs to get more military, political, and economic autonomy in order to be a truly legitimate international player.

Alright lads, remember to be courteous and use your spoilers

BACK LASERS

I also wonder why they didn't send the drones in with the bunker busters the stealth bombers used. That was the only thing that actually had an effect on Goji.

Overall I liked it. I don't think it'll work for a relaunch of monster fightan action, but it could spur a less serious movie.

I recover from Hurricane Matthew to find pic related. The divide in reactions between Western and Eastern audiences is interesting. >mfw ALL THE BEAMS
>>
Just came back from my theater's showing. I liked it.

Godzilla looked pretty plastic and the CGI was noticeable (you could compare it to cutscenes from last gen games), but it stops being an issue after a while. There were also some effects on Godzilla's skin whenever it did something drastic that I thought were nice - heat waves would distort the air when the spines would heat up, and the skin rippled like an Angel when he mutated. Godzilla also still stomps around like a guy in a suit (or a chunk of rubber on wires, in its 2nd form), which was neat.

I assumed that all the dialogue was going to put me off, but I it was actually pretty interesting, and the jargon was restricted to specific plans and loopholes. I thought the political story was enjoyable because I assumed it was about how political gridlock sucked ass. The top reviews make me sad.

>>14828777
I thought they ditched the bunker busters because they ripped open the holes that Godzilla used to fuck them up. Wouldn't make sense to use more missiles and make even more holes for lasers to shoot out of.

>>14828797
Yeah, but I might have only been thinking about it because they kept riffing on Decisive Battle for the planning scenes.

>>14828925
I figured it was trying to evolve/propagate before it died by turning into man. If something can kill Godzilla, it's clearly evolutionarily superior and should be copied, right? Scientist chick said it herself: man is a worse monster than Godzilla.
>>
It's cliche to say sasuga Anno but for realz sasuga Anno.
It's a great dark comedy about beaurocracy, not so much pro JSDF as pro do something and stop screwing around.
I liked the way they mirrored Godzilla's evolution going from slips of paper to old 4:3 monitors to a mix of stuff.
The translation wasn't so great. They'd use Giant Life form but the subs would read Gojira. A bunch of on-screen text gets dropped.

Was the background people chatter in the ending the movie or people in the theater?

But what if the bunker busters woke it up early? The train bombs woke Godzilla up on impact, and they weren't even as effective as the busters. If the US went on another bombing run, they'd catch some shit if it didn't work. I think the US was betting that the nuke would be the best way to end things, and they didn't want to undermine confidence by looking even more ineffective beforehand with another assault, even if Godzilla seemed wide open.
>>
>>14828997

Tone wise, it's sort of like '56 meets Independence Day filtered through Legend of the Galactic heroes. It makes fun of Japan's stodgy conservatism while admiring the strength and determination of its bureaucracy and the nation as a whole. There's A LOT of Tohoku/Fukushima callbacks, and the central theme of the movie is "how does 'the system' deal with a natural disaster that nobody has ever had to deal with before?"

The Chauvinistic Military Japan takes were super-overdone. The movie was almost cloyingly optimistic. Even the bumbling idiots, inept bureaucrats and gun-jumping action men are portrayed as fundamentally good people who just want what's best for everyone.

If you're an autismal fuck like me, you'll love this movie. It's probably my favorite Godzilla movie to be honest.

A handful of people went up front to record the movie on their phones, but most people stayed in the back, and we filled up about half the room. People were silent, for the most part - there were a few chuckles near the start, or whenever the ministers would go

but generally people were quiet.

I probably made the most noise in the room when Godzilla spewed gas, then flames, then atomic fire, or when he went from using back lasers to the one from his tail-mouth, but I tried to keep my voice down, and I'm sure the music drowned me out anyway.

I'm still not really clear about how he obtained his initial research on Godzilla, like that origami blueprint he left behind.

Did he create Godzilla, or did he just discover, study, and somehow aim Godzilla at Japan?

Also since Japan was able to save itself from being destroyed by Godzilla while also not allowing themselves to be nuked again, does that mean that they've passed Maki's test or whatever?

How the hell do you not just have a file of the movie without subtitles encoded onto the footage? Like surely in all the video editing that a feature film must go through, they didn't just chuck all the process stuff and press it on there permanently.

I just got back home after seeing it with my friend who was the one that posted >>14828792

I enjoyed it a lot, moreso than I thought it was going to. It's probably the most japanese movie in terms of filmmaking style I've seen in the last few years.

There was one issue I had, and I brought it up with my friend in the car. For the life of me I couldn't remember the MC's name. They use his title or refer to him without using his anme in the subtitles so often that I didn't remember it was.

Also, I feel cheated that there was no fakeout. Like have the cooling thing, it seems like it worked, last scene when they're looking at it, it wakes back up, they nuke it anyway, fuck you, the end. I was so expecting that, that the fact that it didn't happen disappointed me.
>>
>>14829734
I think the live action Attack On Titan fiasco from last year made them hardcode the subs with their movies from now on.
>>
>>14829744
I actually haven't heard of this fiasco. What went down?
>>
>>14829734
Toho has the unsubbed footage. The movie released subbed so when Funi got the rights they just got the Japanese release instead of editing it out with the original unsubbed footage. The Godzilla vs Biollante dvd has the same problem.
>>
>>14829742
Oddly enough, Yaguchi's name was the only one out of the entire cast I remembered.
>>
>>14829742
Coorect me if Im wrong but godzilla is quintessentially an anti-nuclear thing

that considered, I think you are retarded for thinking that would have improved the film

also Yaguchi is the single most sputtered name in the entire movie, both in word and written in subs
>>
>>14829745
The first movie had one subtitle stuck on the movie the entire time, being "I've been waiting for this day".

Which resulted in hardcoding the subs for the second movie, but the damage was already done, not because of that fiasco, but because the first movie was a piece of shit
>>
>>14829750
So you're telling me that Funi is so smalltime that they can only bring the home video release to American theaters?

Is OUR home video release going to have this problem too?
>>
>>14829742
I was disappointed by the ending too. But I think they designed it so that they can release another Godzilla movie 3 years from now or something.

Having them nuke it anyway would've been a better ending honestly.
>>
>>14829754
>Coorect me if Im wrong but godzilla is quintessentially an anti-nuclear thing

You're ignoring a massive chunk of Godzilla's history. There is literally a film called Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster.
>>
>>14829754
>Coorect me if Im wrong but godzilla is quintessentially an anti-nuclear thing

He is, and you're right, but it's just so tempting to just nail in the "humans are more frightening than godzilla" thing.

I'm not saying it would improve the film, in fact I think it actively defeats the movie's message to do so, as you stated. But at the same time, I kinda wanted to see Tokyo get nuked anyway.
>>
>>14829759

and theyve been trying to stray away from that goofy image of Godzilla for 25 years now.
>>
BD when? I need to watch this again with a pause key.
>>
>>14829757
What? This is on Toho's end for what they provided funi. Toho usually makes an international dub without any subtitles but it is not currently known if it is made yet or even being made. Funi was given the japanese theatrical version with subs. They may or may not have access to the unsubbed footage but they would need ho reedit it themselves which is a lot of work and money for a limited run. Who knows how the home release will be.
>>
>>14829762
You're ignoring my point.

The goofy tone is one thing, but the fact stands that the Godzilla metaphor is a changing one. Nuclear power for the most part yes, but it has reflected pro-nuclear energy values.
>>
>>14829760
>I kinda wanted to see Tokyo get nuked anyway.

Personally that scene where godzilla ejaculates death and destruction on the city was one of the best if not the best I've seen in a while in spite of meh CG

and to nuke the city yes would make "humans the true monsters" but I would feel cheated if humanity stole the thunder from godzilla in his own movie

It was bad enough when the MUTO stole the spotlight, not that I mind the existence of MUTO, just the fact that theyre the main bad guy in a movie simply called "Godzilla"

So did we even really see Godzilla's first form? The film is pretty explicit about there being four, but the first few didn't exactly stick around long. Was adapting to land supposed to be its first evolution?

Plus, I get that the chunk of material they found partway through was part of reproduction, like the tail at the end. But what about the marine biologist guy saying it could grow wings for intercontinental travel, just conjecture on his part? Seemed like a pretty sudden leap.
