It'd be like End of Evangelion but with Kouji fapping over Sayaka's comatose body. Boss doesn't exist in the Anno's version. Shiro is Kouji's autistic disabled half-brother from his adulterous mother. Professor Yumi is driven to alcoholism in the face of his inadequacy in replicating Professor Kabuto's technology. Mazinger's design would make it look like a guy in a toku suit. During a pivotal scene in the movie, Kouji accidentally uses Rust Hurricane on a bunch of civilians and gets PTSD. Sayaka is forced to fight by herself and is almost killed. At the end, Kouji would reject becoming God or Devil and ends up on a beach with Sayaka's body torn in half at the waist. He cries.

Just look at how Shin Mazinger had to shaft the existing cast in order to focus on its original elements (or just characters that were very different from the source, like Ashura).
