All jokes aside, the lasgun is only weak because of the setting. Being hit with a lasgun irl would look and feel more like you were hit by a concussion grenade held up to your chest. You would see a bright flash of light as your skin or clothing vaporized into plasma, much like a high-end camera flash going next to the wound. Higher-power laser weapons might cause enough of an explosion to blow you back and maybe knock you unconscious, or if you got hit by one of the Lasgun's anti-tank big brothers, vaporize you outright turning you into an impromptu plasma grenade for the rest of your squad to deal with. The explosion would create enough hydrostatic pressure to likely scramble your internal organs and maybe snapping your bones in parts of your body distant from the explosion.

It's a strict rule in the US that anything with underage people having realistic guns pointed at them equals an immediate PG rating. CN insisted on Y-7 because they wanted children to watch it to go by Gundam figures. Since Kira's only 17 he's a minor. Thus anytime guns are fired or pointed at Kira, it had to be a laser. No one (animation studios) has any serious money anymore to invest in anime. Especially anime that's broadcast on tv not late at night.
All Gundam shows are done with on a penny pinching budget. It's a disgrace really but what can we do ? All I know is that I won't be buying blu-rays of shows that are animated like shit. And that includes 100% of all Gundam shows post 00.
