I am interest in the Five Star Stories. It's one of those things I've known about for ages but never really cracked and checked it out. I like Nagano designs and art.
I don't know much about FSS though. What type of story is it? What should I expect? How do you suggest I get into it - just start the first vol of the manga?
>>14805563
You should expect having to read it several times before everything clicks. Lots of characters and aliases to remember. The first 3 volumes or so are pretty straight forward at least. Just be sure to remember character profiles.
>>14805624
So there are a lot of characters then? Is it one of those large casts but focuses on a few or just flat out a million characters?
>>14805629
There's a fuck-ton of characters, and if you don't pay attention to the profile pages at the start of volumes it's not too hard to lose track of the side characters in the same chapter that they're introduced. It's made a bit more tricky by that the timespan of the story and Nagano's fashion design fetish means that some characters will drastically change their look in between appearances.
>>14805563
FSS is extremely complicated and hard to explain, not just as a story but how to go about it. >>14805624 has the right idea, but your mileage may vary. I'm just going to drag out something I wrote before on it.
The biggest hurdle of FSS is first understanding the way the stories are presented. As a universe, it works incredibly well, and almost everything makes sense in its context. The stories happen in "real time"- there are no "epic" journeys that take place in the course of a single week like so many other stories. And while there are recurring characters, none of them really visibly develop onscreen, which is also fairly realistic. The setting, much like our world, does not revolve around the characters. On the flip side, it makes the reader apathetic to the overall story because there's no particular character or side to cling on to, and the amount of detail is overwhelming. FSS is very interesting, but simultaneously boring in the narrative sense. Think of it as an anthology, and not a singular story. A lot of FSS's stories are more about "smelling the flowers" instead of going on with the main conflict like Gundam, especially the later chapters.
What is challenging about it is that a lot of the information provided by the timeline and diagrams and such is misleading- unless you reread the actual manga a few times you would probably never catch onto how some of the plot points tie together or the "metaphors" that take place (for example- the whole ordeal about how many Bang Dolls are actually in service).
The worst part about FSS is knowing that there is no actual ending, even if Nagano were to continue writing this for the next 20 years. The timeline does say that there is an ending, but because the story can skip to any point in time, the timeline is just there as a guide and not a summary.
>>14805641
Another thing that doesn't help is that Gears Online doesn't even have all the translated profiles on their site. We really need a need database with updated info and shit but there seems to be no FSS fans that know Japanese.
I think one of the most confusing things for first time and second time readers is all the mysterious shit the fatimas do.
Best thing to do is just jump right in. For the most part, FSS starts small outside of the prologue and the first book is strong start, imo.
If you're wondering where to look for it, google for "Archive Scans"
It also has the added benefit of making L-Gaim an easier watch, if you ever wanted to watch it, because you'll be looking for the FSS influences. Really helps out since L-Gaim is really slow and plodding in the second half
>>14805780
That big crystal in the background I used to think was for looks. Then I noticed that it appears in several flashbacks involving Lachesis in the far future. Something about it having lots of knowledge or something?
Also, if you watch L-Gaim after FSS the fatima being stuck and seemingly lifeless in the L-Gaims forehead will make a lot more sense.
Not OP, but also want to get into FSS. I was thinking about watching the movie first though, would that be a good start?
>>14805840
I watched the movie first and it confused the fuck out of me. So you'll at least be intrigued.
>>14805840
Movie's better after you read the manga, or at least the first arc, because the only real novelty in it is it's a well animated adaptation. The movie doesn't have the same charm as the manga's first book.
>>14805840
I would recommend watching the movie only after reading the first volume. This anon explains it well even if I don't agree with him 100% >>14798929
It's still a must-watch for the animation alone. Some of the best the 80s had to offer.
>>14805840
It got me into the manga. I love it and the ED song is catchy.
man so basically FSS is one giant clusterfuck?
>>14805563
It's the story of your life OP. Try to remember.
>>14805751
Is there a Japanese database online?
>>14806083
>clusterfuck
Depends on your attention span. If you're going into it expecting something like IBO, don't even bother.
>>14806106
does it have likable characters? i'm more a character guy than story guuy
>>14806124
What kind of characters do you like? Regardless, FSS isn't really character driven. It doesn't follow any particular protagonist.
>>14806124
I liked almost all the characters, even though most of them don't get much screen time.
>>14806097
There's a bunch of scanned books with info like the Characters books.
>>14806124
Totally
>>14805563
is FSS the Berserk of /m/ ?
also, does the animation cover all of the manga?
I heard it was still being published or something
>>14807790
>Does this 60 minute film cover a 13 volume manga that is still being serialized
hmmmmm
>>14806097
I found a moonspeak wiki on it once
>>14807814
just watched the first half of the movie, and the first 5 pages of the manga have more mecha on it.
I'm not sure about reading it due to the decade long hiatus it suffers.
the robots are too pretty, though. works of art
>>14806097
There are an absolute crapload. Some sites dedicated to theories and analysis as well.
>>14807926
>I'm not sure about reading it due to the decade long hiatus it suffers.
The hiatus isn't the issue- it's that none of the volumes after the tenth one have been translated. It's still being serialized on a monthly basis but we don't even have proper scans of newer chapters, nevermind translations.
>>14808036
also, what's the relation between gothicmade and FSS?
I've been doing some research, and saw something about GTM overwriting some of FSS stuff
and I've seen 26 chapters of it on mangahere, is that all there is?
>>14808926
Don't read it online, dude.
10 volumes are fully translated. Like 50 pages of vol 11 are translated along with a side story about Aisha's sister. I'll post the latter later
>>14808926
>I've been doing some research, and saw something about GTM overwriting some of FSS stuff
Gothicmade was just a design and terminology change IIRC. Someone said the timeline changed too but since we don't know moon none of us can really confirm.
Gothicmade retcon doesn't even matter because the chapters where it happens haven't even been translated yet.
>>14809191
The GTMS in the back are my favorite so far.
>>14809191
shame the mechs became so thin, they had a good feel.
also, the name Mortar Headd was amazing.
the arm/torso proportion looks odd as well
I gotta rush and read the rest of it
aren't there any /m/ exclusive translators that would put effort on it?
knowing that there's some mecha stuff on berserk level gets me hyped
>>14809613
I'm pretty sure the only thing /M/ groups care about is Gundam
>>14809636
so much wasted potential.
by the way, this is a real robot series, right?
or does this classification means shit today?
>>14809652
It explains magical robots that move at supersonic speeds with in-depth mechanical details, if that's what you're looking for.
Not sure I would compare it to Berserk though, other than how long it's run for. It's very different.
>>14808036
Almost looks like a remake of this image.
>>14809191
Gothicmade > FSS
hi all, anon here who once offered to scanslate vols 11-12. I own the Italian release and can translate that. I don't know how accurate it is. The Italian release has already annoyed me because they use their own romanisation of names which *have official romanisations in a million published books*.
tl;dr I am happy to translate vols 11-12 from Italian but
a) I need raws cos I don't wanna fuck up my manga fumetti
b) Expect accurate translation from the Italian, if the Italian translation was bad, I can't do anything
c) I will need you all to love me afterwards because I have very low self-esteem
>>14811180
That sounds great. I have the raws for 11, 12 and even 13 in here.
http://www.mediafire.com/file/kyxov4ccczpjsim/anon-fss-pack.zip
If you need help typsetting just post the raw translations here in a text file or something and I'm sure some anons can help you out.
>>14811385
>http://www.mediafire.com/file/kyxov4ccczpjsim/anon-fss-pack.zip
(same anon now going by this) Thank you! I can't promise being quick with it, as I have work and other commitments. But I'll do my best. All I can translate of volume 13 is katakana and everyone knows that, lol
Just found another decent scan of a page from that L-Gaim artbook
>>14812703
Also does anyone know what the tidbit about "The Five Star Stories" says?
Nagano really does worship his wife.
>>14813002
Where'd you get this? Have a rare Nagano in return.
>>14813036
I forgot. I've been collecting these images for 10 years now.
Jesus fuck how are Nips getting scans so quickly
>>14813196
Post all you have, please!
>tfw no fatima gf
>>14813229
I'm not sure how to feel at all of those looking way cooler the the Mirage series of GTMs.
Any IDs on which GTMs/MHs these are?
>>14813237
Actually, looking at the one on the far right, it might be a variant of the Red/Blue Armor GTM.
The one on the left almost looks like a GTM version of Viewlards MH.
>>14813249
Also, where did you get the scan? Not seeing it on Futaba or twitter.
The one on the far left is the Helmine, apparently. The others never appeared appeared in the manga, it seems.
>>14813233
>tfw nogothicmadegf
>>14811180
Hope you can do this.
Still stuck at volume 2 because no complete tl.
>>14816720
Not like the whole manga will ever be finished anyway.
>>14813229
I have a surprise for you soon. Just waiting for the newest chapter.
>>14818521
These newer chapters are so weird in the context of FSS. Because they actually, for the most part, go in perfect linear order. As like a continuous story. A couple flashbacks here and there but nothing as jarring as what we had before.
>>14818521
Are you scanning these? Amazing.
The majestic stand is the longest running arc too so far, isn't it? So many character perspectives he's trying to show. So many designs he's having to pump out.
>mfw this entire chapter is just a fuckload of new MH and named characters being introduced
NAGANOOOOO
At this rate he'll never finish the damn manga.
>>14818832
We're officially at a bit past the halfway point of volume 14 and it still feels like the Majestic Stand won't end.
Have you guys built any of the FSS models?
I'm finishing up my Wave kit and it was hellish but the struggle has been worth it. Just decals left now.
>>14818822
>>14818832
>>14818836
>>14818849
How did you get these so fast
I fucking love you.
He keeps giving the GTMs longass names that no one will bother remembering
>>14818921
Also the one where we're only shown the face looks really cool
>>14818822
>>14818967
underappreciated design imo
Were the redesigns and renaming really necessary?
>>14818521
>>14818621
As promised, the new scans for those who want to download them >>14819070
>>14819112
financially, probably yes
I also dislike most of the gothicmade stuff and think it's just too far
>>14819112
Probably not. But without it Nagano would have likely given up on FSS altogether.
>>14812720
It's really blurry and my translation skills are pretty pleb but I think they're all scenes from L-Gaim with a mention that Five Star Stories is Nagano's original world? It would actually help if I've actually read or watched it
And the only one that I really can make out through the blurry kanji and complete lack of context is the right hand side one (all 3 pics appear to be 2-page spreads from elsewhere in the same book) which appears to be a wedding scene with Kamon and Amu after the war in Mizum in the year 3987, above them fly (from the right) the Novel D'Sserd, Mk-III and the Mk-II.
>>14818921
>He keeps giving the GTMs longass names that no one will bother remembering
He named one of them in Russian too. The madman.
>>14819336
If that image is anything to go by we should have some action next month..hopefully using swords
Found a jackpot for L-Gaim
