Funnels are an ideal final boss weapon. They're a great display of power, being overwhelming, omnipresent, and allowing the guy to destroy puny weaklings without even moving or looking at them.
When you put them on protagonists they're just lame, though.

Oh shut the fuck up. No one said anything about practicality. It's about internal consistency. Every mecha series ever has an excuse for the robots and good series avoid shit that would contradict it. Gundam's excuse is AMBAC. Funnels zip around and maneuver in ways that make mobile suits look clumsy and they do so solely with verniers. And again, it's fucking boring to just see a robot sit around and do nothing while the gay-ass funnels do all the work. It's not cool at all. Shit that doesn't do anything isn't cool. It's stupid.

IBO "funnels" could be basically a lot of fly by wire missiles slaved to a neural control system, or basically INCOMs that shoot cannons/anti aircraft shells, or even something like slaving mobile workers so you can make grunts experience what it's like to have the dummy plug used on you.

Legilis had funnels that were made of beams infinitely generated from its shield. And the funnels zipped around like Harry Potter snitches changing trajectory on a dime. Legilis probably had the most broken bullshit funnels of all.

It makes sense as a final boss weapon, even if they are a huge crutch that makes the suit's pilot look weaker than they should imo.

It's because the hero is always outnumbered, so the villain using funnels makes the hero more heroic
