Misunderstood genius or overrated hack?

He's a hack. True genius over here.
>>14796973
Misunderstood hack. People read way too much inaccurate shit into his movies.
>>14797149
And by "people" I mostly mean mainstream western critics and "muh artform" confags.
Who ISN'T a hack?

>True genius
More like MISUNDERSTOOD HACK
>>14796985
Making something as awful and incomprehensible as G-Reco does take a great amount of genius.
>>14796973
He is a misunderstood hack.
>>14796973
I love how there's absolutely nothing in between
Says a lot about the mentality of people here
>>14798983

Overrated hack by fags who only care about aesthetics than an overall good film.
I Fuckin love Oshii and overly Cerebral take on things. It can get a but overdone at some points, but for my personal taste its exactly what Im looking for

Wrong.
He's actually overrated by "muh message" fags who think that all his movies have a very intricate hidden meaning.
Typically they confuse "themes" and "message", and will bring up the fact that his movies explore "complex and serious themes" despite being unable to point out what the fuck he's supposedly trying to tell them about those themes, at least not in a convincing manner.
Of course it's very likely that those people were hypnotized by his meditative artsy directing style, and because they've been taught about Kubrick and such, they conclude that any director who uses a similar aesthetic must have equally subtle storytelling techniques.
But they don't care that much about aesthetics.
If they did, they would praise Kawajiri just as much, because his movies look just as gorgeous. But they don't, because Kawajiri's movies don't have obtuse dialog and meditative visuals.

Pretty well-understood good director
>>14802066
Except for A Wind Named Amnesia of course, but that one isn't famous enough for them to take it overly seriously.
Both?
>>14799119
It's one of my favorites.
Did you watch the other two films?
Straydog was comfy as fuck.
>>14796973
Oshiifag here, he's both.
>>14796973
He looks like a jobless bum
