Are we a slow enough board to get shut down?
>>
I think we're pretty fast. I know a few boards still have posts from like 2013

>Are we a slow enough board to get shut down?
No. /ck/ and /po/ should be worried though. You want to see what an actually slow mecha board looks like, check out 8ch's /m/. But make no mistake. This is bad news for the site as a whole. There are two options: 1 it's real, and 4chan will be fundamentally changed. 2. The rumors about hiroki routinely shaking 2ch down for money is true, and this is just a bluff on his part. If that rumor is true, then maybe the rumors about Hiroki selling user data is true too.
>>
>>14794431
Delete /pol/ and their nuclear waste will leak all over the other boards more than it already has.
>>
>>14794422
I say just ban image dump threads across all boards, saves bandwidth and forces people to actually talk about stuff
>>
>>14794431
>delete libertarian/tea party/neo nazi hug box
>reddit now less of a liberal/socialist/SJW hug box

That could work.
>>
>>14794422
we already slow enough and some moron want toku stuff removed.

>>14794453
this, everyone can be racist without /pol/ label
>>
I've been here for 7 years.

Will I finally be free?
>>
If /m/ is kill where do I go to talk about robots? I'll move to anime bytes for general anime shit but I don't know any good non /m/ mecha communities.
>>
>>14794431
The last time /stormfront/ got shitcanned, it resulted in the rest of the site drowning in politicized garbage. /pol/ exists as a containment measure.

They won't leave once you release the shackles. They'll just consume even more.
>>
>>14794453
>>14794473
That would certainly balance out all the SJW bullshit that is constantly, CONSTANTLY shat out onto literally everything.
>>
>>14794422
Poor bastards like /origami and papercraft/ or /travel/ are worse off than /m/.
>>
>>14794489

>>
>>14794422

>>
>>14794441
>/ck/
>worried
/ck/ is seeing a resurgence due to all the cross-board shitposting like Jack webm's, 'go 'za, etc.
>>
>>14794503
This. I'd rather have /pol/ over SJW fuckers. At least they fit in the site more than SJW tumblr/reddit faggots do.
>>
I don't think /m/ is slow enough to get shitcanned but I also don't think shitcanning slower boards is a great solution (or, it isn't if it's all you do anyway. It'll be a boon at the start but once everything else keeps piling up you don't have that dead weight you can just cut again.)

Best thing to do would probably be removing a lot of imagedump-only boards or merging them down into only a few (I'm talking like less than five total) and limiting filesize/image posts per thread.
>>
for real though

/mlp/, /r9k/, /lgbt/ and /s4s/ should get canned, they were made purposely as a joke (same goes for /k/ but turns out it's a very magical place)
>>
>>14794524
I agree shitcanning the slow boards likely won't do much as they don't contribute as much to the costs. I can see webms leaving all boards but /gif/ having a greater effect than delete shit like /po/.
>>
>>14794528

nah keep /r9k/, it got deleted before but I mean there's a fucking reason they brought it back. legitimate quarantine zone. /mlp/ was one too but I think that shit might have died off enough that you can risk it but I'm not sure. other two can fuck off though yeah.

>>14794530

is there anything inherent about webms that makes them more of a strain over say a gif of the same filesize? I was under the impression it was the opposite if anything
>>
>>14794489
Other 4chan knock offs have /m/ boards (there is even one that Dorkly mods), but they are slow. Not meme slow. Actually slow. Like one post a day on the board slow.

>>14794501
This.

Once there was /k/. Stormfront took it over. The userbase was pissed, so moot brought in an old /k/ mod and cleaned it up. So stormfront took over /n/ instead. Then moot nuked /n/ it later became a train board. Later /new/ was made. Stormfront took that over too. moot nuked that. So they just took over /int/. During all this time they also spammed /a/, /v/, /tg/, and who knows what else with literal nazi propaganda, and racism. Finally /pol/ was made as a containment board. /pol/ mixed with the stormfront retards, and old school /b/ and became something uniquely 4chan.

You nuke /pol/ and it'll start all over again. Hell it'll probably be even worse than those days since the "Alt-Right" is so popular right now. I know some argue /pol/ has failed as a containment board since they shit up every other board. If you think things are bad now, what do you think things will be like without /pol/?
>>
Is really board activity what matters here? How about being a redundant board about media which can all go on other boards?
>>
>>14794528
/m/ doesn't need a reason to exist, it can be eaten up by /a/. Likewise for /vg/

/pol/ is like /b/ MK.II

it's always /pol/ that appears on TV nowadays, they're pretty damn active, like yelling 'PEPE' during hillary speech

it's a shame if they got canned, we'll lost our 'internet hate machine' label
>>
>>14794560

Probably not. There was a legit reason for that board's creation, and that reason has not diminished since. /v/ moves so fast that maintaining any general presence on it is impossible.

>>
>>14794588
Well yeah. If there is no topic beyond "let's talk about X", then there is a very strong chance no one will talk about it because there's nothing to say. Popular things are exceptions because someone will inevitably barge in with something to discuss, even if it's just "man why is this show so SHIT".

It's exactly the same reason generals go to shit, they keep going even when there's nothing to talk about and inevitably end up talking about nothing so they don't get killed.

/m/ was created for a reason, /a/ does not foster a culture where mecha shows and older anime in general can be easily discussed. This has only been exacerbated over the years and if it was difficult to attempt in the past its utterly impossible with the current shape of /a/.

When Yuri cancer spread through /a/ and moe shitposting reached new heights, there officially was no longer a place for /m/ there. As much as some /m/ users can be pigheaded about purity of a genre and hating moe infecting their serious toy commercials for serious autists, the moe fanbase is far more vitriolic and delusional about how superior moe is to anything with arguments of their superficial cute shows that go nowhere "have substance unlike boring mecha shows".

/m/ has always generally been an older audience than /a/ and many older series, sometimes not even /m/, get discussed here mixed in with niche topics often meant with older demographics in mind. /m/ is like a dorky older brother who deeply loves and is near obsessed with his hobbies, and /a/ is our questionably gay little brother that enjoys running his mouth about shit he doesn't know while insulting everyone's taste despite having terrible taste himself.

>>
>>14794579
Considering /v/ is largely off topic and that shithole is disorganized as hell with one of the more autistic user bases of any board, I think /vg/ has more of a reason to exist than /v/. I think they should be one board with double or 1.5x the board space as they are just two containment boards at this point who hate each other. One retard wants order, the other wants chaos.
>and I'd say the same is true of /vp/
You weren't there before /VP/ was made, Pokemon would take up at least a quarter of the board at a time. Pokemon needs a containment board due to its fanbase truly being unable to hold to a single containment thread and spread across several boards. They still fucking try making Pokemon threads on /a/ even tho years ago that was supposed to against the rules, but the current mods on /a/ are clearly pokefags and allow several concurrent Pokemon threads at a time.

>>
>>14794654
/v/ is far more off topic than the usual board but it's not "largely" off topic. at the end of the day it's still primarily discussing video games to some extent.

>You weren't there before /VP/ was made

yeah I was, just because it served a purpose then doesn't mean it serves a purpose now. People discuss the games on /v/ anyway whenever a new one comes out and it's not like they can't condense to a general on /vg/ or a thread on /a/.
>>

Honestly I'd be fine with /m/ getting canned.

I think a lot of us could learn some humility, losing the board and forcing a userbase diaspora might go a long way in beating the arrogance out of us.

Or it backfires as everyone just clutters to a single new home and doubles down on arrogance and cliquist attitudes, but I'll take the risk.
>>
>>14794696
So this just raises the question, why not just reduce /vg/ to a single page directory of discord channels?
>>
>>14794625
>/m/ was created for a reason
Yeah. Autists kept spamming /a/ with Gunpla while screaming "I want /m/! I want /m/!"

One could argue that with /toy/ there is no need for /m/ anymore since Gundam could just go there. That said, I vehemently disagree with the idea /m/ serves no purpose. Yes /m/ these days is just a shitposting board, but it didn't used to be. I think with a little tightening /m/ could go back to being an actual mecha board instead of an excuse to troll tomino and shitpost Zeta. You can't discuss mecha itself on /a/, just mecha shows. You can't discuss mecha itself on /v/, just mecha videogames. Etc. That said making /m/ be an actual mecha board would slow the board down, and make it prime for deletion.

I have my /jp/ needs covered with bienvenidoainternet and some other shitholes.
But where are the other places to discuss mecha?
>>
>>14794630
I've gone to /a/ more than any other boards in the almost decade I've been here. I prefer the autism of /m/ more but really both are about what you enjoy more, the issue is the mentality and anime discussed by both boards are way too different at this point for them to coexist as a single board. It used to be /m/ was way quicker to shit flinging about how "moe is shit! I need a /M/AN'S anime!" But now /a/ is way worse than "mecha is shit with no substance, they pale in comparison to the subtle developments of K-ON! Love live put sunrise on the map as finally a successful company that makes good anime not struggling to exist making shitty anime about ugly toys with no plot."

And before anyone claims in strawmanning I've seen those exact things stated on /a/ so many times it seems to be an actual opinion by a large portion of their active user base and not joking/trolling/baiting.
>>
>>14794592
>>14794422
Why nuke flash and other genuinely useful boards, when we can just start nuking the porn boards?

Think about it. 1/3 of the boards on this Chan are porn. Even the slowest take up a lot of space because most threads are just picture & video dumps, not rawtext discussion.

The people there often don't even come to this site for anything OTHER than porn. 4chan is purely a fapbank to them.

The porn boards give the site a bad name and attract the wrong attention, taking up needless space with crap that can be easily found on xvideos or something. We only need one or two porn boards, not ten.

Since NSFW is bannable on blue boards like ours, there isn't a threat of 'spillover' after after they get nuked. If former porn-board users try to start lewd threads here they'd get banned and wouldn't come back.

>>14794630
Imagine /m/ users on /a/. General anime outweighs mecha by about 100:1 on this site. Nearly all of our threads, things like fresh sub threads, question threads, game threads, image dumps, and non-gundam discussion would die. Those kinds of threads would just get instantly ignored and shoved to page 10 by the faster, larger, and unsympathetic /a/ user base.
>>
>>14794691
Generals are a terrible idea in general. Basically trying to recreate a regular forum on an anonymous board, except there's no moderation, only one thread where all discussion is stuck together, you can't argue anything because the other side will always act like everyone who disagrees with them is just one guy, and you have to keep posting or the whole thing disappears.
Combine that with the average childishness of posters (seriously, almost all of /vg/ has FIRST! posts like this is fucking youtube) and you just end up with a clusterfuck.
>>
>>14794695
>it's not like they can't condense to a general on /vg/ or a thread on /a/
Except there is recent precedent that that's the exact case. When the latest season of Pokemon was ongoing/ending there was a minimum of 2-3 threads all going at once on /a/. The fanbase literally cannot comprehend sticking to one thread so they don't clutter the board.

But i guess the best argument to remove /VP/ is that as a containment board its shitty and mostly ineffective.

He supposedly makes videos about cooking easily on a budget but /ck/grew fascinated with his inability to cook and got much of his shit is not only raw, unevenly cooked to say the least, lumpy messes of sludge, etc but genuinely unhealthy and are legitimate immediate risks if someone consumed them. Top it off with how apparently his kid confirmed they don't eat that shit and they proceed to throw it out after he makes the video and they pretty much subsist off just fast food, you can see why actual hobby chefs find him fascinating.

Also if you can find it see his wife making food. It starts with you thinking she's making nachos as she takes tostitos chips and then putting salsa, beans, and cheese dip (all from jars or cans). But then you notice it's in a large glass serving tray made for cooking. Then she pours in milk and puts it in an oven for an hour. When it's done she calls the congealed disgusting mess "lasagna".

And before some nigger says that this has been coming from moto himself, here is what he said as his farewell message

>I've spent the past two years working behind the scenes to address these challenges, and to provide 4chan with the foundation it needs to survive me by bolstering its finances, strengthening its infrastructure, and expanding and empowering its team of volunteers. And for the most part, I've succeeded. The site isn't in danger of going under financially any time soon, and it's as fast and stable as ever thanks to continued development and recent server upgrades. Team 4chan is also at its largest, and while I've still been calling the shots, I've delegated many of my responsibilities to a handful of trusted volunteers, most of whom have served the site for years.

And this slant eyed nigger managed to piss all of this away in a fucking year.

Turns out that all those posts that people made showing he fucked over his old chan turned out to be true and not shitposts

So, it strikes me that deleting /pol/ could be possible, but you'd need a shit-ton of mods, all working in organized shifts, to contain the shitstorm which would ensue. We're talking carpet-bombing bans in order to stem the tide.

Didn't Hiro fuck one of the japanese boards with something similar? Something involving selling info, iirc.

I'd kinda like evidence 4chan being that bad money wise. It might have something to do with the missing JList ads but they wouldn't pull them out without a good reason.

Besides that, moot seemed to imply everything was a-okay when he left.

Besides, I think its because of the recent increase in /pol/ junk.

I did this for the SRW generals, but consider this an open invitation.

Remember it was brought back because moot deleted /new/

It's only grown so big because every other site crushes any sort of discussion "counter" to the popular narrative.

Boards like /m/ and /toy/ aren't even close to the ones actually eating up data. Deleting them would have a negligible effect on the site's costs.
/gif/, /wsg/, and /hr/ are the biggest problems, and the first two are literally nothing but reposts of reposts with no discussion to go with them beyond retards asking for source.
>>
>>14794625
>/a/ does not foster a culture where mecha shows and older anime in general can be easily discussed.

Except for as much as /m/ likes to pass itself off as the seasoned old guy...we're not that much better.
We have a contingency that jerks off to OVAs and SOME 80s (there's maybe a handful of 80s titles you can count on seeing consistent discussion with most of the rest falling by the wayside or just repeating the same talking points again and again and again) but otherwise, for all /m/ likes to preen itself for being the board for older anime, most of it we really can't seem to give that much of a fuck about. Most of the time it barely even has a fighting chance anywhere outside of the 70s/80s General threads.

>>14794632
This.

The bid to 'take Pepe back' lead to people making deliberately edgy Pepes just for the sake of trying to drive off the 'normies'.
Then, in a triumph of Poe's Law, a bunch of legit racist groups glommed on without realizing these were being done as a 'how offensive can we make this?' tactic.

Then Trump's campaign got in on the act and now the original creator of Pepe is even trying to disown the new face of his character.

Oh, it died a long time ago. All that's left are the most autistic horsefuckers. The ones who are most likely to see their coming demise as a moment to start flinging shit in self-defense. The ones who are still around just for the porn would probably shrug and go somewhere else, but a vocal minority would very likely take to other boards to "demonstrate why we need /mlp/".

It'd probably be quashed pretty quickly though; I don't think many of them would know how to circumvent bans.

Actually, Furie(Pepe's creator) said in a recent interview he doesn't care and is just taking it as it comes since it's all grown out of his control and it's has long been outside of his control before he even knew Pepe was a meme.

Before that there was an image of Pepe he drew taking a piss of "Make America Great Again". Which might be the only blatantly politicized image of the frog he's done himself.
Matt Furie is a pretty chill dude from the times I talked to him.

Popular boards aren't going anywhere. /m/ and /toy/ are fringe interest boards that represents nothing and basically just take up space with undead threads that sit for days after they're created until they die. At least /toy/ has a number of generals that are somewhat active, but even then you could fit that activity onto a handful of threads at any given time.
>>
>>14795401
I saw both /TV/ and /co/ fall to waifu and pony threads respectively for those exact reasons. Autists who don't get its a joke, taking it far too seriously, and things getting out of hand. Neither ever recovered as the terrible users kept clinging to new cancerous things. I miss having boards where I could discuss films and western animation.
>>
>>14794528
/mlp/ is pretty dead as is, and all the pony porn just goes to /trash/ so they won't have nowhere to go or anything, /r9k/ sucks, and honestly so does /b/, if it were possible to just obliterate /b/ and all of its posters, that'd fix the bandwidth issue and remove half of the toxicity, /lgbt/ is harmless far as i can tell and they don't use up much bandwidth, /s4s/ is fucking gold, and it also doesn't use much bandwidth.

/pol/ and /b/ being destroyed really would save us, but their posters are such assholes that they'd just bleed over.

All the porn boards need to merge.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I've been here ever since I started college and I can't imagine life without it. Every day, browing the threads, seeing what's new in the world of mecha...it just won't feel right without something like that. Still, if /m/ on 4chan ever goes down, there's surely another place we can congregate, whether VF-kun's site, another smaller imageboard, or wherever.

That said, about /pol/, does anyone remember April Fur's Day? I recall the conceit behind that was that moot created a furry board as a "containment" for furry content, but then not only deleted it but banned *everyone* who ever posted in it. That would be one way of dealing with /pol/ and its leakage, though an extreme solution, and one that would probably cause a huge uproar these days.

It was the guy that bought all the rights to AIDS treatment medicine and then obscenely raised the price for it.

And then offered it for free to those without insurance. And then worked on it to try and create better and more effective medicine without as many side effects(which can't be done without acquiring the rights first).

Guess what part of the story the media fails to portray?

And claimed that insurance companies would foot the bill.

Dick move anyway, paved the way for Epipen to mark up prices on the grounds the autoinjector design which they lifted from the US Army was worth that much.

/m/ getting shut down is now one of the least of your problems now /m/orons.

Just some fun facts about Shkreli
>Obtained the licensee to manufacture the anti parasite drug, Daraprim
>Daraprim is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, meaning it's one the list for most important medications
>He immediately raised its price by 5556% (from $13.50 to $750 per pill)
>Tried to justify it by saying insurance would cover the massive increase in costs when it would mean your insurance would drop coverage for the pill, or your premiums would sky rocket.
>Also unlike Epipen, he didn't create or develop the drug/device, he just obtained the right to exclusively produce it and used that bottleneck to jack up the price.

Oh and he was arrested by the FBI after being indicted on federal charges of securities fraud and is currently pending trial.

>>14796853
If 4chan wasn't turned into a hapless giant in these past 8 years, it would have been funny to see him try and monetize the site or rule with an iron fist. Now only boards like /a/ and /jp/ have enough will to burn it all rather than give in to something they hate these days.
The real question is why has Hiro been jerking around the site writing in broken English when it was already confirmed a while ago he was fluent and he was typing like a normal person with Shkreli.

With either option of outright buying the site, or just financing it to keep it active. Shkreli's endgame is more than likely going to be getting user data since let's be perfectly honest. From a marketing standpoint 4chan's demographics is a hard nut to crack. And based on who we act, not worth their time since, except for more recent years with the flood of normal fags. The average 4channer was at least partially tech savvy, and if given the option, would also steal everything that wasn't nailed to the floor via piracy. I wouldn't be shocked if companies like Microsoft or Sony have paid marketers on /v/ trying to get people to softmod the systems of their competitors in order to drive down sales via piracy. I mean look at how no one wants to advertise here, or post an ad program that can bypass adblock. (Or the one time Hiro tried to shill a Youtube video on the 404 screen, how much of a shitstorm that caused.) When trying to market yourself to 4chan, a vast majority of people aren't going to bother since 90% of the users won't see the ads in the first place and the other 9.9999% won't bother because it costs money and they know of a cheaper place to get it.

So knowing the particular habits and interests of your average 4channer is still a giant, black box. Sure you can ask what people are interested in, but there is no way to know what is real interest from 100 people and what is just 1 person using 10 different computers to make it look like they are 100 people.

The 4chan pass changes that because you have to use it to make posts and enjoy the perks. Meaning it's a way to track the posting habits of individuals, where they post, what they post, their likes and dislikes. It's an untapped frontier that Shkrelli thinks he can exploit and cash in on.

Or he's just fucking loony and wants to call himself the king of shitposters and says he owns 4chan thinking that's some sort of street creed in the business world.

If that's the case, we need to kill all the memes that exist because they are some twisted zombified forms that should have died when normalfags started to spam them. It's how things always went. Even classic ones like pedobear went the wayside and /b/ never waged a 'take back pedobear' campaign where they just went everyone to spam CP in the name of pedobear.

pepe and wojack were a mistake from the beginning. (wojack was moot's fault when he blew up /r9k/ and they flooded every other board with their 'feels' shit.) and more importantly, the reason OC has become stagnate for the past half a decade. Make more shit of existing memes and repeat rather than posting a flood of new content and the few best rise to the top via natural selection. Or get mocked as forced memes when it's clear someone is just spamming it.

Outside of particular series airing, what has /m/ created that you can look back at with pride in recent years?

It's inevitable that a good meme is going to leak to other boards and to the general public, unless there is something about it that makes posting it unacceptable to a society's mores. Case in point 'pool's closed' Spread throughout the Internet's general content websites, but not to many social media because of the racial implications even if it was benign.

What makes a good meme great is how it seems to fit in perfectly with a seemly random situation and it's not at all forced. Take Baneposting. Obviously /tv/ has crashed that meme into the ground with no survivors but because of how the lines can be worked seamlessly into other random conversations or work, it had legitimate legs. Also we had saw a good glimmer of 4chan of old when /tv/ raided reddit when they were hosting one of the actors who was in that scene and ended up pissing him off so much, he never went back. Stuff like that is magical. But when you create a template, and stuff what ever you want into it. It makes a meme inorganic and lose what makes a meme appealing. Pepe and Wojack are perfect examples of this. Pepe in particular since he doesn't even stand for anything anymore, just what the person who's posting him wants him too be. So it creates this situation of always smashing a round peg into a square hole and thinking it looks good to people.

>>14797266
No, when the mecha and toku fags put aside their differences to fight against what they both see as a coomon threat along with boards like /a/. Then you'll know the darkest hours of 4chan have truly arrived. Think, The Second Renaissance level of implications

>>14797433
Also remember when moot left, he specifically said he spent his last two years working behind the scenes tso that 4chan would be breaking even and would be fine for years. Granted the American Presidential election has created a flood of new traffic. But I doubt that would make things go so bad.

/pol/ is so full of themselves that when moot pulled his usual shenanigans when boards go too far (like when /a/ doxxed rapeape back in 2013) they took it as an unwarranted personal attack, and that moot was trying to censor them.

rapeape is still a shitty mod though. He, Troid, and Redwood need to go.
>>
>>14797778
Memory and all that. I just remember /tg/ trying to have a discussion about using african folklore in a campaign, and some stormfronter filling the thread with bile, and complaining the whole time moot was censoring him. >people who don't understand how bandwidth works thinks these charts are actual evidence for deleting boards.
Storage isn't the problem, it's bandwidth, which means it's fast moving boards that have constant posting and traffic that are the problem and need to be addressed if server costs need to be brought down. Deleting boards that are slow, but large will accomplish nothing.

>>14794542
You're partially wrong since you're making the assertion that stormfront just moved into a board and it wasn't part of the natural evolution of how a board like that would operate. it's the old axiom of 'Any community that gets its laughs by pretending to be idiots will eventually be flooded by actual idiots who mistakenly believe that they're in good company. ' Since /n/ and /new/ were both about News, you had people on both sides of the political spectrum debating and racism was played for laughs. Although there are some people who were genuinely racist, and used the board as a way to vent how they feel since it's highly frowned upon to hold a sign that says 'I hate niggers' up in Harlem. But as the board developed the racist elements proliferated and instead of being done in jest a way to vent grew to become a stormfag proxy causing further radicalization that caused moderate posters to leave. Board is no longer about News so moot nukes it. Same pattern happens with /new/. /pol/ was created to be about politics instead of current events so /pol/ followed the same path of development, it wasn't off topic. If anything /pol/ is like a giant petri dish full of bacteria that we're seeing evolve and change before our very eyes. Right now due to current events we're seeing a spike in this 'alt-right'. Once the American elections are over, expect to see that crash.

Here, enjoy a picture from high school. It's when posters were demanding a pokemon board because of how much traffic it was pulling on /v/ where they could keep multiple threads active on page zero at any given time. When moot said 'no', they all went to /po/ to declare it stood for 'pokemon' and spammed it with pokemon, over 90% of the board's original content was wiped out by the time the mods retook control.

It's noteworthy because moot then created /pk/ and it's the only event that involved /po/.

It was a simpler time, where communities like 4chan weren't driven by ideology. Things like the Habbo Hotel raids were done solely because they were entertaining. Hell, the amount of different groups that participated at the time would make you double take just because you wouldn't think they would ever be able to work together on everything, 4chan, YTMND, Encyclopedia Dramatic, etc. In todays terms, it would be like if 4chan, reddit, tumblr 'and neoFAG all decided to raid a site together.

No politics, or one group attempting to undermine things, just everyone going in as nigras in suits with afros and blocking anything they could. Also Swatigets
