Are you still going to do the thing? You know... the encodey thing? For G Gundam? In HD? Just the raws would be incredible. I want to see the final episode cameos so bad and I can't wait for RightStuf to get on the job, especially since a lot of things they do are DVD only at first.

I made a test encode of ep1 anyway, so I figured I'd just do the whole episode with sub/dub to give /m/ a template. Expect nothing further.
>>
>>14789669
You need to stop doing this to yourself man. All you're doing is enticing people to come to you and beg for more.
>>
>>14789674
I already wanted to test encode it, that's just for myself. You know I like taking apart the BD releases anyway, and I want to help /m/ out in any way I reasonably can. Trust me, putting that one episode together reminded me of why I don't want to commit to a whole release.

Anyone else not have the space to download something this big? Is this common with all blurays to be like nearly 200 gb for 24 episodes?
>>
>>14789813

>>
>>14789813
These are the raw BDMVs, it's completely normal, but most people don't download these.
>>
>>14789813
A double layered Blu Ray is 50gb, but these 4 discs weren't completely full so it's "only"166gb for 4 discs. These are whole dumps of discs, not transcoded rips.

Also at least temporarily it should be plenty easy to get 200gb free space. HDDs are cheap, even if you don't wanna open your case or is on a laptop you can get USB 3.0 UASP HDDs for fairly cheap that are just as fast as an internal drive with none of the hassle.

>>
>>14790102
>>14790118
My big complaint is how the scanned layers are really obvious at times.
>>
>>14790127
That's not a problem with the scanning, that's a leftover from when the painted cels were photographed to the film that this remaster is made from. When layed on the background, the cels will cast a slight shadow if not perfectly flattened. All the cels are either destroyed, lost or sold to collectors, so the only thing to remaster the show from is the film, so one has to live with that.
>>
>>14788355
I'd like to, but it wouldn't be for a while. I have other stuff that I'm putting off because a 55-hour work week doesn't leave much time for subbing and encoding stuff.
>>
>>14790175
Also, we'd probably get a release from Rightstuff in a year or so anyway, and with the sub sounding better than it does on the DVDs.
>>
Can anyone post those wideshots with all the Gundam Cameos mixed in?
>>
>>14789679
Well, they had to run out of toku sooner or later. Also, personal issues and whatnot.
>>
>>14790190
The dub won't be a huge improvement, if at all. It was compressed in the mix, so don't count on it magically have more dynamic range. I wish it didn't sound like shit.
>>
>>14790275
In fairness, Ocean/Blue Water never could afford to update their tech (expensive stuff), never mind that the US doesn't rely on hiring them for Gundam stuff anymore.

>compressed in the mix
what the fuck, way to un-futureproof your stuff
>>
>>14790319
That's irrelevant to the creative choices made during the mixing process. The other Ocean dubs sound fine, except for SEED, which is possibly just as compressed. Wing in particular
>>
>>14790372
Very few things are honestly made with the effort of futureproofing. We should all be glad that they never started doing anime on video tape instead of film.
>>
>>
>>
>>14790383
To be fair, ADV still had the audio stems for Eva's dub when they did Renewal, so dialogue stems could still exist, but you and I both know this isn't the kind of show that's going to get a remix.

I actually looked into this issue the other day, and while some extremely high end hardware/software plugins can supposedly expand the dynamic range, there's no guarantee, and there's nothing free.

Having listened to it closely over the last few days (and being more experience with audio mixing now), I'm fairly confident that not only is the compression extremely strong, but there's a VERY heavy handed EQ going on in the high and low ends. They pretty much made this thing only good for crappy television sets. Sounds effects almost never stand out, and yet many of the original Japanese effects are "boosted" with stock sounds that have a bit more of a stereo field. In a way, it's kind of fascinating how many liberties they took with the sound design. Tons of ambient bass sounds, electricity sparkling, gears, hydraulics, etc.
>>
>>14790522
>In a way, it's kind of fascinating how many liberties they took with the sound design. Tons of ambient bass sounds, electricity sparkling, gears, hydraulics, etc.
Ocean/BW's SOP in a nutshell. It's like in all their early years of having to make/adapt stuff for American TV, they never really got out of their old habits to the point of resuing stock sound effects and even musical tracks sometimes.

Having participated on the Ruby-Spears Mega Man show might have been a partial cause, but still.
>>
>>14790522
>many of the original Japanese effects are "boosted" with stock sounds that have a bit more of a stereo field. In a way, it's kind of fascinating how many liberties they took with the sound design. Tons of ambient bass sounds, electricity sparkling, gears, hydraulics, etc.

Didn't they do this for the 0079 dub too? I mean I think it's kinda shitty to change the sound design of a show like that but then again I can kinda see why. All the stock Sunrise sound effects they had been using from the 70's until the late 90's were getting really long in the tooth, being really fuzzy compared to the crisp digitally recorded dialog.
>>
>>14790558
I don't think it's all habitual. Gundam Wing is 100% faithful to the original. Many of the sound effects are really reduced in the dub for some reason, but other than volume changes, there are no additional sound effects or heavy-handed compression. Ocean also wasn't the only team to change things. Bang Zoom altered 0083 a fair deal, even changing one of the BGM tracks for no reason. Since then, I think only Unicorn has been 100% identical due to its international development.
>>
>>14790578
0079's was completely redone from the ground up, and your reasoning is basically why. The dub sounds nothing like the original, even some of the BGM is altered.
>>
>>14790372
>way to un-futureproof your stuff
It doesn't matter, RightStuff will release it anyway!
>>
Why are Gundam BDs being released as if it's raining cel canisters at this point in time?
>>
>>14790522
There are some scenes in Zeta where Ocean added some ambient sounds that really helped the mood. The Dub had some excellent sound work done during the abandoned ship segment of the first fight between Kamille and Yazan.
The worst stuff they did with the dubs was replacing a lot of beam firing sounds.
>>
>>14790799
Probably cheaper to do the remasterings I would guess? I know the US is getting ass tons of releases since the simulcast of Build Fighters making it popular in the west again.

So, here's the subtitle zip file. The first episode has been restyled and formatted for 1080p encodes of the episode, so feel free to base it off that if you want. It falls more in line with my last few EG subs styles (Franklin Gothic Demi-Bold Condensed as the dialogue font), but of course you're free to do with it what you please. I've also included the chapter XML files from the DVD rips which should roughly work for the BDs (I wouldn't bother changing them). I have not bothered to rename the files, as they were simply batch extracted from the final MKVs (ep1 excluded).

if you just freakin wait , then someone will reencode it. I it takes time buddy. you can also do it yourself too.

There's a reason it's 960px720p, it's because it's 4/3 so you don't need the BLACK bars on both sides.

>>14797672
That depends, is G Gundam's original source good looking enough for 1080p to allow substantial viewing quality improvement over 720p, or are you just wanting higher numbers because you think they're better?

There's nothing stopping you from downloading the BDMV and encoding it to 2560x1920, if it's the latter.
>>
>>14797710
I don't get encodes, which is a problem if I want to take the BDs and slap the English dub over them like I mentioned >>14797419

How does encoding work? Is it just rendering the videos, subs, etc. for different resolutions or what?
>>
>>14797741
encoding is like taking a high rez pic and making a jpeg or bmp, etc, it's to save size yet trying to keep the same quality. Your computer will process the video frame by frame which is why it takes time. The better the quality the longer it takes. add subs and dubs is the easy part, but then you'll have to resync it since it normally does not match the DVD.
>>
>>14797939
So yeah it's just rerendering the video with lossless compression. Maybe I'll try with one episode once the DVD dub audio comes in.
>>
>>14797974
>lossless
This conversation is killing me.
>>
>>14798025
You could stop it now. Come back to us.
>>
>>14798025
Hey I admitted I had no idea what encoding was.I just wanted to know since if I want to slap the dub audio onto the BD rip I might as well do encoding too.
>>
>>14798044
You could if you wanted to... it'll work decently enough for casual viewing, but the dub will absolutely be out of sync to a noticeable degree.

You can get 99% of the way in encoding by simply using the "veryslow" preset in x264. I'm serious.
>>
>>14787422
So are we getting a US release of G subbed or dubbed? I'm only buying the bluray when it comes out if it's subbed.
>>
>>14798210
We will, we will, it's just a question of when, but given RS' insane release schedule for 2016, I think it's safe to say we could get these as early as mid-2017.
>>
>>14798218
I just wanted clarification. I mean, I love G Gundam, but if RS gives us dubbed blurays I won't even bother
>>
>>14798218
Kleckner responded to someone on Twitter today about G, saying that Sunrise has a hold-back window they have to adhere to, but it sounds like it's probably about a year if 0083 is anything to go by, since last I recall, they said early 2017 for that. If they push 0083 out to summer, then make it a year and a half for the hold window. Earther way, it's not that bad of a wait, all things considered.
>>
>>14798070
But muh AviSynth.
>>
>>14798265
I could've sworn the dub was one of the better things about G Gundam. I know it's problematic, but i'd like to see the show and hear the dub on Bluray if possible.
>>
>>14797387
>So no one will encode this?
Why bother when RS will just release it in a year or two? Fansubbing/encoding has been made obsolete by RS.
>>
>>14798979
Discotek, too. With them doing things like Mazinger Z and Gaiking, there's no real need to get involved sometimes.
>>
Is this show "worth" BD quality? Like V Gundam looked nice but it certainly wasn't worth BD quality. There's a lot of ancient OVAs out there not getting BDs which deserve it more than V Gundam

I haven't even done anything in my test encode other than convert it to 10bit. I do wish x264/ffmpeg had this ability built in, because it would make 10bit super easy to bring over to the other installations by simply loading up a binary.
>>
>>14799210
Victory has massacred by Bandai Visual. The 35mm episodes look good though.
>>
>>14797672
I did a 720p test encode and the show isn't worth 1080p. Here's a comparison between the raw bd video and the encode upscaled to 1080p with mpc-hc and madvr: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/186648/
>>
>>14800163
As someone who has never used madvr, what kind of upscaling filter was used?
>>
>>14800163
To be fair, that's the in-episode OP, which has even less resolution than the episode itself. I haven't done any res tests myself, but you should perform one using a different frame.
>>
>>14800406
Are you counting both frames he used? I don't know anything about G Gundam so they could both be the OP for all I know though.
>>
>>14800429
I missed that one, woops, but that's also a bad frame to use as it uses a photographic effect which blurs out the image. Don't get me wrong, I'm usually the one who downscales things for 720p when they're 16mm, but ever since NGE, I'm more careful about that "rule", and on top of that, I'm beginning to wonder how these 720p encodes will hold up with 4k screens, especially in the grain structure.

Hmm, maybe a 720p 4:2:2 encode would be best.
>>
>>14800674
I haven't done any of this encoding stuff before but if I understood the x264 fullhelp correctly that's done with --output-csp i422, right?
>>
>>14800793
You need to convert it to 422 in AVISynth, ideally. I'm running some REALLY quick and dirty tests myself right now though, and while I agree that the actual resolution is okay at 720p, upscaling it 1440p and 4k displays (I have both) begins to show some artifacting. This probably would be perfectly acceptable on a 1080p display, but with identical settings and a lower CRF, I still can't completely squash the artifacts compared to a 1080p encode.
>>
Anyway, for those who want to encode this:

The show is probably soft enough for 720p, but I think in 2016, it's difficult to recommend this as an archival resolution due to increasing display resolutions.
>>
>>14787422
>G Gundam BD release

It finally fucking happened

How the fuck did I miss the news of this
>>
>>14800434
I wouldn't worry much about 4k. Ever since I heard that 1080p content looks worse on a 4k screen than on a 1080p screen I've pretty much committed that 1080p is "good enough" and that I won't 'upgrade' to 4k. Hell, my cable co still broadcasts most stuff in 720p. It'll probably be 2020 before they bother with 1080p.
>>
>>14801456
Well of course content of a given resolution on its native display will look better, then same could be said of SD. SD looks pretty solid on a smaller SD CRT TV, but that doesn't mean it doesn't look like shit on a 50" HDTV. I'm not saying 4k is optimal, but it's going to be a reality soon.

At the end of the day though, it's up to whoever encodes it. Personally, I'd probably encode this in 1080p just for the encoding benefits, but I perfectly understand why 720p is justified - I've been making that claim for 10 years now.
>>
>>14801789
It may be a reality but that alone doesn't mean one has to buy a 4k monitor or TV. One can just keep going with 1080p, probably for the next 20 years, especially given how much content is 1080p or lower and how the future appears to be horribly artifacted streaming video that looks bad anyway.
>>
>>14801885
>how the future appears to be horribly artifacted streaming video
Precisely the reason one should work against it. Pirated content is pretty much the only widely available (aside from BDs themselves) high quality content around.
>>
>>14789813

I've never done much video editing before, but I had a lot of money to kill and bought the sets.

Is there a way to rip the videos as they are on the BD, and without doing any sort of further encoding, just apply the dumb audio as a seperate audio track onto the ripped files?

Or do a "lossless" encode compared to the original ripped files visually and in terms of audio, and the only real diffeerence would be the added audio track?
