First I watched as a kid: Transformers Armada.
my parents wouldn't let me watch Gundam as a kid because it was "Too Violent"

First I watched as an adult after...what? 8 years of no toonami?

Gundam 00. and then it spiraled out of control, ranging from Hotblooded to bullshit. it's been a ride.

Voltron, then Robotech. Robotech was already in the Southern Cross arc when i started and my school bus would show up early a lot so I missed about half of it but watched all of New Generation/Mospeada and fucking LOVED it. That's really what made me a /m/an.

Gundam Wing on Toonami. G Gundam was what got me into it though.

The GoLion bots and characters didn't show up in the vehicle Voltron show. They pretty much played each show separately with the only connection being that one character from Dairugger was supposed to be the cousin of one character from GoLion. I remember him mentioning getting a letter from his cousin Pidge once, and that's pretty much it as far as I can recall.

Here in the land of HUE, back in the 90s, there was this short-lived weekly anime block on TV which aired a bunch of OVAs, including the likes of Detonator Orgun, Zeorymer, Genocyber, Gall Force and Iczer-3. I don't remember which one of those I saw first, but Orgun made the strongest impression on me. The others were probably butchered for TV exhibition.

The first /m/ show I ever saw was Voltron but my stupid baby brain somehow thought that was Saint Seiya and i didn't realize otherwise until recently (I don't know why I thought the lions were piloted by Saint Seiya). But Escaflowne was the first /m/ anime and anime as a whole, like one that I differentiated as something other than a western cartoon, that I ever saw.

Technically another /m/ anime I started with was Digimon which I saw before Escaflowne but Escaflowne was the first thing I saw heavily focused on mechs specifically.

Astroboy

I guess you could say they really SCREWED the POOCH on that one huehuhehue

but yeah Warbandit's nice. The amount of Dakka on him is pretty much the best
Samurai's dope too but we only ever got to see him so many times and I think he was outshined by the one that turns into a racecar

Blackram's is also ok but I couldn't get down with the goat head, even though it would probably serve more purpose than a regular head

The Grendizer manga is pretty brutal (anime is shoujo shit), but it's still nothing compared to Violence Jack.

American here: earliest memory of Japanese anime that I watched was either:

- Tetsujin dubbed (Sci-Fi/SyFy channel?)
- Gundam Wing
- Casshern (OVAs were shown on Sci-Fi channel as well from the early 90s)
- Transformers Armada

I consciously got into Nagai several years ago when I read Devilman at the first time
Of course I started to realise then (and especially when I saw "bleeding" robots in Mazinger) that he influenced Anno, but I wouldn't call that traumatising.
Still slowly comming to understand that Eva is not a revolutionary progressive masterpiece of robot anime but just is a fanfiction about whatever Anno liked in 70-s pop culture and actually is retro as fuck even for its time was fun

"Harenchi Gakuen was criticized as vulgar because it introduced overt eroticism to children. Male students and teachers were depicted as being preoccupied with catching glimpses of girls' panties or naked bodies. Many parents, women's associations, and PTAs protested.

In particular, the PTA protests over Harenchi Gakuen were notorious. Nagai was bombarded with interview requests from newspapers, magazines and TV. Whenever he flew outside of Tokyo, TV cameras were waiting for him. He was branded a "nuisance" and even an "enemy of society". He, however, had a clear sense of what things he could or could not do with the manga.

At first, Nagai didn't think that the opposition was against him, since he was aware of the standards that applied with movies and similar things for an audience below 18 years old. At that time, he never drew sex scenes, avoided pictures of genitals and made nudes cute rather than sexy. His fans supported him throughout the PTA protests. They sent him letters where they expressed how they were aware that the adults cracking down on them were reading raunchier stuff than what Nagai was producing.

The protests were not only against the manga, but also against the TV series. The PTA managed to prevent the distribution of the magazine in some parts of Japan. As a result of the protests, when the series was about to be cancelled because of the PTA, Nagai changed the theme in Harenchi Gakuen into a more mature and serious matter, from nonsense gags with sexy touches, to a full-scale war where murder was depicted in the bloody way for which many know him. This led to the famous ending of Harenchi Gakuen, symbol of freedom and of rejection of the hypocrisy, where all students and teachers, while defending their freedom of expression, are killed by the PTA and other parental forces. This was the ironic answer that Nagai gave to the PTA."
