What's this era called? Legendary era?

Shinsei Era for the new Japanese film(s)
Legendary Era for the US films

Legenzilla vs Shinzilla when
>>14772395
Never
ShinGoji is only one in his universe.
>>14772602
They could bullshit their way with alternate dimensions.
>>14772608
>A Godzilla is going through dimensions to fight other Godzillas.
They acknowledged Zilla/GINO in both GMK: Giant Monsters etc. (a more serious-toned Goji film) AND Final Wars (a super not as serious Goji film). You never know, mang. Crossovers happen, and sometimes they don't even give you an explanation.
Of course GINO/Zilla... you know what fuck it I'm calling him Ginozilla from now on. Ginozilla's sole purpose in Final Wars was to get his shit rekt by the Gojira. They wouldn't do that to LegendGoji, as it seems Japan liked him a lot more than Ginozilla, yes?
>>14772608
Dude they opened up possibilities with black holes 'n shit with G vs. Spacegodzilla and G vs. Megaguirus. CROSSOVER HYYYPE

>>14773194

I'm so fucking glad it's playing in my theater.
>>14771863
It only get in the way of his flame vomit.
I wonder if a lot of people will go see it. The movie is pretty damn Japanese.
>>14773276
What matters is if it did well in Japan and it did so we get sequels, you shouldn't care about what the normies think.
>>14773282
I mean, I don't care either way. people will probably walk out of the theater. more silence for me.
I think it's easy to be a bit disappointed at the final act simply because it is, in fact, Anno but it's still Godzilla. I guess that's Toho's job.
However, even for casual viewers, I think "that" scene is just so mesmerizing and such a treat for the unsuspecting that you can't help but wish for another. But that might be going against the theme of optimism pushed by the MC. That despite "that", we can succeed when we grow the balls to take chances and everyone works together to that end. The international cast helps.
Just a heads up.
Thinking of coming back to Chicago from Louisiana to watch Goji with friends
Worth it lads?
The movie just arrived at my theaters and only like 6-7 people was on the cinema with me.
I love how effective it is to make a movie where everyone has their duty and role in the movie. It felt raw compare to traditional characters in movies.
Why do normies don't dig Shin's design?
It is pretty neat and resembles the original.

>>14773470
But Godzilla was just a dinosaur in Heisei and only for the sake of GvsKG's plot
>>14773470
Or yanno... less like a toasted marshmallow with a shitload of teeth.
But to each his own! To me, it just sounds like the grotesque design doesn't fit the tone of the movie, and that's all I wanted dangit. They made a horrific Godzilla, they should put 'em in a horror movie.
>>14773477
Not about his origin.
It's about his design.
>>14773490
>They made a horrific Godzilla, they should put 'em in a horror movie.
They did.
Shin Godzilla is a panic horror movie for Japanese people.
>>14773316
>That despite "that", we can succeed when we grow the balls to take chances and everyone works together to that end.
Like in Gunbuster?
Shin Godzilla has reached $73 million USD and 5+ million admissions. At the moment it should be resting in second place, behind Your Name and ahead of Zootopia.
It seems to be really slowing now. Not sure how much it has left in it. But $2 or $3 million more should put it ahead of Monster Zero.
>really want to watch this in a theater

>>14773912
Hope you enjoy it, mate.
I just want to say thank all you anons for this wild ride. I've been posting and hyping up this movie with you guys these past months and it really has been a grand time. I know there's still a few weeks left til us filthy gaijins can finally see it, but it makes me sad knowing the ride will be over soon. Because after this these Godzilla threads will die out, hell they're starting to die out even now, and I'll probably never get the chance to discuss the big G with people like you all. So thank you all, sorry for the blogpost.
>>14773944
We will receive more Godzilla movies, comics etc after this one year after year so don't be so pessimistic man.
>>14773944
You can probably look forward to some intense conversations around the time more Westerners get to see it. We'll argue about the quality of visual effects, whether the titular character is actually Godzilla, and Legendary apologists will probably attack the human characters. It'll be an nteresting one or two weeks.
Studio khara posted a storyboard on Twitter. And what ever happened to the illustration book?
>>14773944
You do realize that this isn't going to be the last Godzilla movie, right? Between Shin's success and 2014, there will be at least two more films before the end of the decade, along with whatever other kaiju kino comes slithering along.
>>14774138
Ah. Looks like the book got pushed back to November.
>>14774140

>>14773436
>Why do normies don't dig Shin's design?
First off, why care? Normies and Goji don't mesh.
>resembles the original.
Well that's already one strike against it as far as normies are concerned. I even saw normies complaining about the Legendary design because it stood too upright and therefor wasn't realistic enough for them. Thing is, if it doesn't look like it walked out of a Jurassic Park movie, normies can't handle it.
That's what it mostly boils down to. Shin Goji ramped up the freaky grotesque factor, which makes it too outlandish for most people to handle, way more so than any "standard" Godzilla design. That, and it's a bit controversial even among fans, so go figure.
>>14773753
Is this form of Godzilla extremely popular with women in Japan? I don't get it? There's a shit load of fan art and food modled after this thing.
Shin's coming to Canada soon.

Hideaki Anno is officially back to work on Evangelion. So, unless Toho decides to wait for him, it's unlikely that we'll be getting a sequel to Shin Godzilla. There's always the possibility of someone else taking over and continuing the story. However, those are huge shoes to fill. Whichever way things go, hopefully Gen Urobuchi's take on the character will keep fans satisfied for the time being.
On another note, we should probably be thankful Funimation is handling North American distribution. Now we don't have to worry about the abysmal Hong Kong dubs or Sony dubtitles that have plagued the franchise for decades now.
>>14770072
So when's exactly Shinzilla hitting Funimation?
>>14776906
Aw, but all five of actors they kept using in all the Hong Kong dubs were like members of the family

Going the End of Evangelion-lite direction for a hypothetical sequel to Shin Godzilla would certainly be interesting. Though the discontent from the embittered members of the fanbase would reach levels that shouldn't even be possible.

>>14777633
Godzilla vs Biollante
Godziila vs Destroyer
>>14777633
Godzilla vs Destroyah is my favorite heisei.
I also LOVE G vs The Smog Monster
>>14777633
Depends on the flavor of Godzilla you want.
Japanese cut of King Kong vs Goji for a classic monster brawl.
Godzilla Vs. Hedorah for camp and craziness.
Biollante for a cool monster and action. GMK because it's cool.
>>14777633
>chronological order
>In Godzilla
Hehe. HEHEHEHE.
If you want a good few to start with though?
>Gojira, not to be confused with King of the Monsters.
>King Kong vs Godzilla
>Mothra vs Godzilla, aka Godzilla vs The Thing
>Invasion of Astro-Monster, aka Monster Zero
>Terror of Mecha-Godzilla
That's the classic top shelf shit mate. From there you have two options.
If you like want the best modern films, check out:
>Godzilla 2000
>Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah
>Godzilla against Mecha-Godzilla
>Shin Godzilla if you can catch it.
If you really want a more episodic, linear format, watch:
>Godzilla Returns, aka Godzilla 1984
>Everything after that but stop at:
>Godzilla vs Destroyah
Those first 5 are mandatory, no ifs, ands, or buts. Everyone here agrees with me.
>>14777776
But Godzilla 2000's decent
>>14777776
>off by one.
Fug, let me add on regardless.
If you really like the Showa films (1954-1975) in the first group, you can add Godzilla vs The Smog Monster and Destroy all Monsters. Watch the former right after Monster Zero, and the latter last.
In the third group, known as the Heisei Era (1984-1995) if you don't want that many films, you can honestly skip Space Godzilla.
Watch 2014 whenever, assuming you haven't already.
>>14777802
better off with Gamera for the heisei era in prep for SHIN
>>14777799
That's why I listed it as a worthwhile Shinsei film. Newfags can't handle the high-octane kino that is Megaguirus.
>>14777809

>>14777814
Mine too, but I was only four years old, so it hardly counts.
Few years later, I saw Gojira on the big screen at a guild theater. That shit was tight.
>>14777825
i would love to see Gojira on the big screen. missed it on the anniversary.
Shin Godzilla is showing at FANTASTIC FEST in Austin. Texas rn :(
>>14777633
Watch Godzilla 1954, King Kong vs Godzilla, Mothra vs Godzilla, Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster, and Godzilla vs Monster Zero. This is the peak of the Godzilla franchise in my opinion. Godzilla vs Biollante and Godzilla 2000 (U.S. version) are also worthwhile.
>>14776906
I don't know who did the subs for the movie releases in the Asian countries, but they were fine.
>>14777437
Go watch Thunderbolt Fantasy, it's a Happy Urobuchi show featuring a chill wandering warrior, a chill thief and a chill villain. No bleak nihilistic rants about the failure of heroism to put the hero in despair and the optimistic rookie even bounced back very quickly to continue believing in justice.

According to the review from Collider, Anno nailed the tone and the humans are enjoyable, however, there isn't enough Godzilla and the film suffers for it: C+

>>14779281
That score is kinda harsh.
>not enough Godzilla

>>14779379
How long is the movie? I know people tried to justify the lack of screentime in Legendary Goji by saying '54 Godzilla was only in the film for ten minutes. Thing is, Legendary was a drastically longer film. Granted, Shin Godzilla seems like a whole other beast, film wise, from Legendary Godzilla, so maybe it works to its advantage to not show Godzilla too much.
>>14779421
The thing is that Shin Goji actually shows Goji when it needs to show him which Legendary doesn't do with cuts, fog and so.
In Shin Godzilla, the human characters keep talking and thinking about Godzilla even when he's not on screen.
>>14779421
Shin Godzilla has a 2 hour running time. Same time as Legendary's Godzilla. Where the latter film fails is its human characters. The most interesting members of the cast are used sparingly and the least compelling character is the focus. When it seems like the suffering will be relieved, Edwards snatches it away repeatedly with the teasing and by time he delivers it's not enough. Imagine Jaws with poor pacing, dull characters, and John Williams' iconic score replaced with generic music. A long, empty bore.
From what I've read and seen thus far, Shin Godzilla seems like an early episode of Neon Genesis Evangelion with conventional weaponry replacing the Evangelions and Godzilla replacing the Angels. And it's appears to be something of a spiritual remake of Gojira (1954).
>>14779123
I think he means in the sense that he doesn't want to be limited to Godzilla. But that's the only thing his audience seems to care about. Honda preferred slice of life films. Toho didn't really give him an option and he accepted his fate.
>>14777120
>not Shinya Tsukamoto
>>14778219
Someone link me to the artist. Becoming a big fan of his godzilla work
>>14779379
Most normies dont really like or watch godzilla movies. They saw a couple dubbed Godzilla movies back in the day on TV when they were kids, saw the Iguanazilla movie, and now consider them experts on the subject.
>Oh yeah bro, I fucking love Godzilla. So awsome......What the fucks a Space Godzilla?
So now they are watching Shin Godzilla and the Legendary Godzilla, and despite being "huge fans", they've never actually sat down and watched one of the movies and complain theresw not enough Godzilla. All they remember from when they were watching it as a kid was Godzilla fighting. They dont remember anything else.
>>14779469
Is the meming by referencing that "where's poochi?" thing?
>>14779469
It makes sense that politicians and scientists would be busy trying to stop such a menace if it happened in real life and could not think in another thing apart from the murderous unkillable monster that is destroying their biggest city.
>>14779623
>that one scientist, Yamane or whatever, in '54 who throws a guy out of his house for saying they should prioritize killing Gojira over researching it
A 160 foot lizard popped out of the ocean and enacted nuclear levels of devastation. You can study the corpse when it's dead, until then work on ensuring Japan sticks around.

>>14779790
Yeah. Godzilla was completely destroyed in the original film. Skeleton and all. The Kiryu Duology retconned this.
>>14779742
Think of it from Dr. Yamane's perspective. It's only nine years after the atomic bombs were dropped and there are probably still plenty of people dealing with radiation sickness. Perhaps Dr. Yamane's wife was a victim. But he does change his mind about Godzilla after he comes ashore in Tokyo.

Oh yeah, Shin is definitely a very different type of film, but seriously, Anno did well in balancing the scenes between the monster scene and the human drama. Where Legendary's human talking scenes that aren't Brian Cranston was boring as hell, Shin's was actually pretty engaging.
Any funny moments in the film?

> "Shin Godzilla is not a pseudo-documentary and there’s no pretense of found footage, but there is an array of contextual cues and onscreen text unlike what we expect from a monster or disaster film. Watching Shin Godzilla is like reading the most gripping Wikipedia page ever written. But it’s more than packaging. Shin Godzilla feels so remarkable because of its storytelling choices, which eschew main characters and avoids heroic protagonists."
> "If you can get over some really atrocious CGI, Shin Godzilla is a kaiju movie that tops any other monster movie put out this century. Not only does Shin Godzilla find something for the humans to do, it offers us one of our species’ greatest triumphs, as we prove to god and nature that our collective powers, the society we’ve built together, is stronger than any monster."

Thank you, friend
all the effects in the world are worthless without meaning behind them, even the "janky" cg scenes will have great power in them. Everything about this movie looks gold. 1954 looks like puppets all the time, doesn´t stop it from being a timeless masterpiece.

Use to have all of Heisei and Millenium scores but that was ten years ago and at some point I lost 'em.
There's one torrent for the Perfect Collection posted on several sites but no seeds. FFShrine has a thread for Godzilla but I guess my old account got deleted for inactivity or something and I can never get the damn registration email when I make a new one.
I actually looked at>buyingthe actual CDs but even they're a pain in the ass to find and are expensive as hell.

> "Shin Godzilla is political, funny, odd, and so specific in its intentions that it could have only been made in Japan by Japanese filmmakers. It is also a Godzilla movie without much Godzilla, an unsubtle satire with no room subtlety and no memorable human characters. It is less interested in mass destruction and more interested in government process and Japan’s place on the international stage. It has a really good joke about the difference between “Godzilla” and “Gojira.” I have no idea if it’s a good movie, but I can’t wait to see it again."
Positive Review from Kill Screen
https://killscreen.com/articles/bow-mighty-shin-godzilla/
> "It is with pleasure that I can report that the upcoming Shin Godzilla, which translates roughly to “New” or “True Godzilla,” is the first Godzilla movie since Gojira (1954) to feel relevant to contemporary issues—assuming you don’t count Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster (1971) as a trenchant critique of wanton pollution."
> "Also, hey, it’s extremely good. Co-directed by Neon Genesis Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno and Evangelion assistant director Shinji Higuchi, and written by Anno himself, Shin Godzilla reconfigures the kaiju film as a satirical kaleidoscope of bureaucratic bullshit."
> "Trust no one about this movie, not even me. See it for yourself—prostrate yourself before the one true Godzilla."

A rather scathing review of Shin Godzilla:
http://birthmoviesdeath.com/2016/10/01/fantastic-fest-shin-godzilla-is-a-monster-sized-disappointment
> "Thankfully, there aren’t a lot of examples to prove this, but Godzilla movies where he doesn’t fight another monster tend to be awful. The original should be an obvious exception. Godzilla: 1984 is super boring, and no one likes the first American remake."
> "What Shin Godzilla wants to add is bureaucracy machinations spliced with a little anti-US satire. None of it satisfies, however. The satire alone should make this automatically one of the best Godzilla movies ever, but it never lands quite like it should to be effective on that level, which is frustrating."
> "Also frustrating, this has one of the greatest looking Godzilla’s ever. Not just his look but the care and detail of his destruction. Perhaps the film suffers by offering a Godzilla we want to see too much. His big atomic breath moment may anger some purists (it starts out as fire, but basically turns into a lightsaber beam that shoots out of his mouth - and his back and tail as an aimed defense mechanism), but I loved it. The film teases all these wonderful new approaches to filming Godzilla, but it’s hard to accept how little of this we get."
> "In the end, it is a unique experience to see a non-American Godzilla film on the big screen, and I still recommend you go for it if given the opportunity. But the decision to celebrate Toho’s triumphant return to the Godzilla game with a movie like this baffles me. If nothing else, I have hope that the film’s success in Japan leads to a series of great Godzilla fight movies because I want to see this iteration of the character in a movie that deserves him."

IGN's Review of Shin Godzilla
Score: 8.5
http://www.ign.com/articles/2016/10/03/shin-godzilla-review
> Shin Godzilla provides a new origin for the legendary kaiju, establishing its own unique style while taking inspiration from the classics in all the right ways. Some fans might be disappointed by the monster’s lack of screentime or confused by the complex bureaucracies at the film’s center, but it all comes together by the end.
Highlights:
> The original 1954 Godzilla, though primitive, still holds up for its poignant allegory of nuclear armament and the personal responsibility of those involved with the creation of the nuclear bomb. The 2014 Godzilla was a dopey action flick that had no deeper meaning or metaphor beyond typical brainless schlock about family and duty.
> If your main complaint with the 2014 Godzilla was the monster’s lack of screentime, you won’t be much happier with Shin Godzilla. But if your chief criticisms of the last Godzilla movie were its nonsensical plot, cardboard characters and lack of any reasonable motivation for all involved, then Shin Godzilla might be more your flavor of giant monster movie.
> Shin Godzilla is far from perfect. Godzilla itself, now all-CG, looks fine in most scenes, but the effects don’t always hold up, particularly in close-ups.
> At first I found it confusing that the movie introduces every single character -- anyone who speaks even a word -- with on-screen text identifying their name and title, like a Wes Anderson credits sequence on fast forward. I eventually realized it’s part of the joke; Shin Godzilla is suffuse with extremely dry humor, much of which unfortunately won’t land for Western viewers who will struggle to read two sets of subtitles in almost every scene.
> Ishihara proves least believable in her role as middle-woman between Japan and the US, not because she’s a young woman, but because her English speech is so unnatural-sounding.
>>14800404
i know!
>>14800530

>>The 2014 Godzilla was a dopey action flick that had no deeper meaning or metaphor beyond typical brainless schlock about family and duty.
>Missing the pretty obvious nature themes through the film.
I'm not saying it's equal to 54 in deepness, not by a long shot, but c'mon now.
>>14801592
They're kinda right though. The theme about "nature is not in our control" isn't really the focus of the film, even if it wants to be. The movie seems to be more about family or some other bullshit that wasn't well developed at all.
2014 was not bad but bit too generic
>>14794215
Oof. I'm surprised there's somewhere in fucking Iowa I can drive less than an hour to see it.
>>14801592
Eh. It mattered about as much as it did in Godzilla vs Mothra (Battle for the Earth). Godzilla '14 was a pretentious, boring, overly long, slow moving spectacle. Little else. I see what Edwards wanted to do but the human drama, teasing, and pacing kills it.
>>14801631
If they cut a good 30 minutes of the film (mainly of the army fanwank and drama of characters we don't even care for), it'd be fine.
That movie was longer than it should have really been.
>>14794563

I've always wanted a Godzilla western tv show where Godzilla is the sheriff and Ghidorah, Hedorah, and Gigan are the troublemaking cowboys from out of town.
Mothra is the local sweety whose stuck with her abusive husband, Battra.
Anguirus and Rodan are Godzilla's drinking buddies, although sometimes they help him catch lawbreakers.
Either King Kong or MechaGodzilla are the hotshot that shows up from out of the blue and ends up being found out as a fraud.

I personally think he is cool for remaining a Godzilla fan and showing it to the world even if he is e-famous, many e-celebs become normalfags with time.

>>14773316
Since everyone's posting reviews, might as well post some thoughts. Might be spoiler-y.
>subs
It was quite challenging to focus on the actual scenes the first time. Had to deal with three layers of subs plus the fast speech rate and a wealth of information to digest. There were area names in every location change and every speaking gov official's names and position were included, no matter how small the role. I decided to ignore those two and try to see more of the actual scenes the second time. I actually think a good dub will help.
>humans
I feel that they are one of the best elements of film. The cast is suprisingly lively. Even if Cranston didn't die, 2014 would still be a very serious affair. This film isn't like that. Things do get serious, but are also elements of satire (first half at least). There is more optimism than you'd expect.
>engrish
Yeah, Ishihara's character is definitely more Japanese than American. PM's advisor being actually Jap helps in his case and his accent is still understandable. There was more foreign participation beyond the US and I really appreciate that.
>godzilla
Honestly, even with "that" scene and the soundtrack, I feel burgerzilla had more actual character. Wonderful as it is to see him in action, Shin G is practically a plot device, a problem for the humans to solve. I don't exactly know how long his screentime is but I believe 2014 has more total kaiju screentime. Effects-wise, it's really commendable what Japan can do with CGI. I have no problem with CG and overall it's really good by asian standards, especially since it's a big part of the film.
>sound
Was it just my local theatre or is it really that LOUD? The barrage on Shin G's face and legs were DEFEANING. The footsteps were THUNDER. Also vintage sfx and tracks.
>"pacing"
I have to say the human parts kind of dragged on between "that" scene and the final operation, just like how I felt about 2014's middle.
>bump limit
fug.
>>14804031

>>14794563
He talked about his first experience with Anno in an interview. Found this online somewhere.
>“Shin-Gojira, wow, it was certainly an experience,” said Godzilla, pleasantly recalling his times on the new film.
>“Yeah. Yeah, it was really an incredible experience. I think Anno and I really struck a chord with each other and I just can’t sing his praises enough, he’s just so...Inspired? Yeah, that’s it. Inspired.”
>Mister Godzilla began to chuckle a bit, seemingly at a memory of his.
“What? Something funny, sir?”
>He nodded while deep growling laughs came from his chest, a contagious smile plastering his face that spread to my own in seconds.
>I remember seeing the nose on his snout crinkle sweetly, one like that of a jolly old man with nothing but happiness in his life.
>“Yes, yes something very funny,” he said, starting to come down a bit.
>He leaned back in his seat, sighing a big breath of atomic fire.
>“I, uh, remember when Anno first met me actually,” he said, a small grin on his face. “Quite strange then as well. He was interesting though.”
“Really? What did you think of him?” I asked, preparing to jot this down on my notepad as quickly as possible.
>Another chuckle.
>“It’s not in the way you think. It was a long time ago. Think he was about five years old or so. I was at a signing in ‘65...64?”
>He pondered for a moment, a claw tapping his chin.
>“Yes, it was ‘65,” he said, snapping his fingers.
“And what were you doing there at the time? Was it for a movie?” I asked him.
>“Yep, good ol’ Astro Monster. One of my favorites, if not most successful.”
>I gave him a curious look, unsure of which film he was talking about.
>I’d previously looked up all the titles in preparation to this interview, and Astro Monster wasn’t one of them.
>He playfully rolled his eyes.
>“Monster Zero. It was called Monster Zero in the states.”
“Ah, thanks, now about Hideaki Anno?”
[1/2]
>>14805512
>“Ah, yes! So there I was at this mall, promoting Monster Zero, and the line was gigantic, filled with kids, adults, you get the idea. And, y’know, I always like to be invested at y signings, right? I mean, c’mon, I’m really thankful for y career, and these kids make it possible for me! They still do!”
“Was Anno one of these kids?”
>Godzilla made that sweet old man smile again.
>“He was the most peculiar. Picture it like this: I’m there at this table with Rodan and King Ghidorah. Rodan was tired, wanted to focus more on his band. Ghidorah though, well, he was always good with children.”
>He smiles, but with a hint of sadness.
>“He may have been only ten years older than me and the rest, but he was like a father to us. All of us.”
>He chuckles pitifully.
>“Whew, well, anyways, after an hour went by, this one kid comes up to me, right? And you what he says?”
>Godzilla looked me straight in the eye.
>“I wish I could destroy Japan and be called a hero.”
>Of course, this wasn’t that funny, but his laughter! You just couldn’t not laugh with him.
>We just sat there for five minutes heckling.
>As he regained his breath, he continued.
>“Now the next thing he did was even stranger! He then asked if I could sign his underwear! Underwear, I mean, seriously!? Of course, I said that’s strange, so then he said if I could sign his Mom’s underwear! Rodan just gawked at me. He was like, ‘Don’t do it, G, just don’t’ but he knew I would. Still, I glanced at Ghidorah, and all three heads gave me a wink. I had to.”
>I had tears in my eyes from laughing.
“Ha! This is great!”
>“It is! I swear to it! Then I lean over the table, and I say, ‘well son, any particular name you want signed?’ And he, of course, says Hideaki Anno...Now on his Mom’s underwear, he says something different.”
“Please tell me it was something crazy.”
>He winked.
>“I wrote Mothra.”
>You fell on the floor in laughter.
