It doesn't work well, which is why a lot of modern art depicts the RGM-79 with a more conventional armor skirt like the Gundam's armor skirt. Old models like the HGUC GM from 2001 get away with it by not making it one piece, while the plastic model GM from 1981 has minimal hip-thigh articulation.

I went about a billiondy years without realizing the GM Custom was based on the Alex.

One thing I've always wondered was why did they give them ballistic rifles? Why not beam weapons? Was the beam spray gun considered so bad, but beam rifle technology still too impractical and/or expensive to put on a GM?

Admittedly we don't give our soldiers battle rifles; we give them M4s because it's better to have more bullets. Maybe the rationale was that pilots would be more likely to score hits, and that's more important since MS can't actually take all that many (if they penetrate)?

Beam Spray Guns were fine. They wouldn't have been as widespread as they were in the OYW if they didn't work; GMs of the era had access to ballistic weapons but Beam Spray Guns worked fine.

In reality it was just the kind of combat that the directors/writers wanted to have in 0083. They apparently wanted dogfighting and shootouts so they opted for everything to have machine guns, even the Gelgoogs which have also been given forearm machine guns in addition to the hand carried machine gun. Cima's custom Gelgoog Marine has a beam weapon, but it's also a beam machine gun. Even the GP01 had a machine gun early on, later switching to its own beam rifle.

In universe there might be a few reasons. Maybe the 04th MS team pilots preferred machine guns. Perhaps Cima fleet found it difficult to maintain beam weapons for all of their suits without enough spare parts and a supply chain, so they opted to arm their suits with mechanically reliable and simple to fix machine guns and only kept a beam weapon for Cima's personal suit. Databook and backstory fluff for Gelgoogsand other machines like MSV's Act Zaku have told us that Zeon had trouble producing enough beam rifles to arm them all.

Not really, those RX-79s were planned long before Amuro got into the cockpit and when they were deployed the White Base had just accomplished their first noteworthy thing (killing Garma). Zeeks didn't panick at the sight of the RX-79 suits anyway.

They're probably called Gundams because they use project V parts and are closer to the Gundam's design and frame than the Guntank (tracked locomotion) and the Guncannon (heavily armored support fire).

I dunno, I think animation trumps static art. Karen and Shiro's RX-79 units were able to withstand 75mm gatling and 175mm magella rounds with no scratches. Sander's RX-79 had its leg smashed in with a 175mm magella cannon round but it didn't go all the way through.

Its gatling gun mostly hitting the backpack, shield and upper chest armor from looks of it. The cannons hit should have done the most damage. But if I remember they are made of the same shit left over gundam parts. The only time it was in danger of a cannon of that power koing it was when Ramba Rals wife was in a megella top almost at point blank aiming at his back pack.

She even said she was close enough at that range it should have enough to punch through. Other then that its lost a few shields to bazooka hits, discarding the lower halfs as they just slow you down at that point. Machine guns even from episode one hardly did much.

Speaking of gundam material, what do the later suits use?

Basically in the OYW you have GM and Zaku tier armor then you have gundams which are mostly made out of this more difficult to produce wonder metal armor.

The Gundam MkII is made out of GM armor since it was mostly a testbed for the movable frame design concept and all the other modern stuff that would become standard for an MS.

But the Rick Dias had some sort of refined version of Lunar Titanium that was easier to produce?
Do all suits basically use that from Zeta-onwards until the future of the 'tiny MS' school of design where everyone switches to using smol MS (with really thin armor compared to the old days, to the point where OYW kinetic weapons would tear them up if they connected, along with more powerful generators) that rely on dodging apart from gimmicks like beam shields, basically everyone is playing rocket talk with beam rifles.

I'm no expert but the shot on Karen's Ground Gundam is dead on the chest which is the most heavily armored part of a MS, the shot on Shiro's from the 175mm cannon looks like a glancing blow that grazed the chest lost energy and then hit the shoulder. In an early episode of Zeta, Franklin Bidan acknowledges that the Gundam Mark II has older armor but that next generation armor will be on newer Titans prototypes. The Mark II is considered light because it has the movable frame that emphasizes less armor.

Maybe so, but it was the first GM Sniper I ever saw. The first sniper mobile suit I ever saw actually. the GMS2 is cooler, but the GMS1 has a special place for me.

The whole thing with Torrington is that it happened on Earth. Gravity is a huge equalizer with many MS. Even a tacticool oper8r Jesta can reasonably lose to a Dom on Earth. It's not like a biplane fighting an F-22. Maybe a Rick Dom vs. a Jesta in space would have a gap more like that.

It's MS capable of atmospheric flight that really make the OYW suits look obsolete. Or in the case of the Jestas, the fact that they were riding base jabbers.

The humanoid mode works well on land, but it's not that great for flight. Mobile armor modes usually change the MS so that more thrusters are pointing to the back and streamline the body, making it somewhat more aerodynamic (as far as giant 80s/90s/00s/etc robot designs go) and capable of greater thrust and acceleration in mostly straight line.

For example, consider the Zeta Gundam. In MS mode only the backpack thrusters point to the rear, the rest of the thrusters like the ones on the leg just point straight down. In waverider mode, the machine's layout changes so that most of the thrusters point to the rear instead. It has a more streamlined shape that is like a delta wing body, making it more suitable for flying in an atmosphere. Also the waverider mode has heat-resistant panels on the underside, making it possible for the Zeta to perform atmospheric entry by itself without needing extra equipment like bulky external thrusters or heat shields. A humanoid shape isn't really capable of all that

It's not all good, though. It's difficult for Zeon and Federation armies to have transforming MS because they are more complicated, and require more maintenance and money. Zeon groups usually don't give a fuck and just spend more money as they are small groups that tend to invest in higher end MS to offset the Federation's advantage of numbers. On the other hand, the Federation has sort of always been interested in transforming MS for their versatility, but failed with a bunch of experimental designs that were rejected due to high costs and impracticality and whatnot. Eventually they end up fielding limited numbers of moderately decent but not very high end transforming machines like the ReZEL.
