The unloved child of the three space westerns in the 90s
>>
I honestly don't know how trigun is more popular than this. Trigun is fucking terrible.
>>
>>14754759
It was just really bland and disinteresting compared to the other 2. It also reeks the most of the stereotypical 90s anime which leads to it both aging worse than the other 2 and also not standing out fit the time period its from.

It's a perfectly fine show and it's not bad, but it really pales in comparison to Bebop and Trigun. It also has a fucking stupid ending, that doesn't help.
>>
>>14754768
>It was just really bland and disinteresting compared to the other 2. It also reeks the most of the stereotypical 90s anime which leads to it both aging worse than the other 2 and also not standing out fit the time period its from.

That's one hell of an opinion you got there.
>>
>>14754759
>unloved

It's literally my favorite anime.

Now I just wish the first series got an anime, since Outlaw Star is a sequel.

Wouldn't that be its spinoff, Angel Links?
>>
>>14754784
Fair point on that part, I think that how it just kinda faded to obscurity while the other two are pillars for their genres but results may vary i guess. I still think it's bland but it really does nothing special I can see that sets it apart from the rest of the anime of the 90s.

It's a fucking fact that that ending is nonsensical garbage, though.

i grew up as a Toonami baby and loved it. I like all three of the '90s space western animes, but Outlaw Star is my favorite. It's scope of adventure is far bigger than the other two and the eclectic main cast and supporting cast are more fun and aid in the world building of the show.
>>
>>14754762
Only the anime of Trigun is terrible.
>>
>>14754797
>I still think it's bland but it really does nothing special I can see that sets it apart from the rest of the anime of the 90s.
I only watched the first handful of episodes of Outlaw Star so I can't speak for the entire show, but there are a lot of people here who would respond to "but it's just the most nineties show possible" with "but that's what makes it good!" and see it as a pro.
>>
>>14754762
Well that's just, like, your opinion, man.
>>
>>14754797
>that ending is nonsensical garbage

Meh... On that level the same can be said with the other two to be honest.
>>
>>14754821
>On that level the same can be said with the other two to be honest.
No they can't, you can argue that Trigun or Bebop have bad endings or you didn't like them but they at least made sense. Outlaw Stars ending is not only a shitty ending far worse than either of those two but the ending just didn't make sense. Iirc Outlaw Start got canned and was supposed to go on longer which would explain how bad the ending is.
>>
>>14754797
>but it really does nothing special
>a future that is essentially space-Hong Kong with Triad overlords
>constantly poses the question of what's the difference between a human and a machine made to be as human as possible
>a world of science and Chinese taoist sorcery together
>a space opera that actually has fucking aliens living among us and doesn't pretend humans are the only species out there
>a story that's about the sheer adventure far more than the destination

Also
>It's a fucking fact that that ending is nonsensical garbage, though.
>ignoring the themes of the entire show

>>14754834
>Iirc Outlaw Start got canned and was supposed to go on longer which would explain how bad the ending is.

It has that ending because that's how the manga ended.
>>
>>14754797
>It's a fucking fact that that ending is nonsensical garbage, though.

>Trigun
>I carried my not dead psychopath brother bent on killing all humanity back to town with the woman I love and nothing bad will ever happen ever

>cowboy bebop
>now we play "is he dead? find out never!"

>outlaw star
>ends with them completing their goal and the admission that life keeps moving on, and that there are adventures around every corner so lets get going.

One is typical anime, one is bait and switch that never pays off and one is a good ending. this is coming from someone with genes star tattoo on his arm, so I may be slightly biased but I dont think im am in in this one
>>

Funnily enough Outlaw Star is the oldest of the three. The Manga started in 96 (and lasted until 99) and the Anime premiered in January of 98.

Trigun's Manga started in 97 and the Anime premiered in April 98.

Cowboy Bebop started as an Anime with an aborted premier in April 98 and full premier in Oct 98 on another station.

Sounds accurate. You don't see it brought up amongst any of the aforementioned space westerns that got exported very much.
>>
>>14754834
What don't you get about it? It's easily the most clear cut of of the three. One allows the genocidal maniac he spent the whole show trying to stop to live and the other is a vague and nuanced ending with the death of the MC. Outlaw Star on the other hand ends with the crew finding the treasure they've been looking for, stopping the bad guys, and then going off an another adventure. I don't understand what's so nonsensical about it.

I'm going to guess that he means the final battle of the OS vs the Geomancer. Which kinda ignores that the physical battle was only sorta happening, what was actually happening was that Gene and Hazanko were having a fistfight in the Leyline's realm of existence, and this was being transferred into the physical realm. It's not nonsensical, it's just utterly unrealistic because the whole ending arc deals with a literal god machine.

>>
>>14754949

I've argued for years that he actually died from that botched hit in the church. The show makes it clear that he had wounds that he shouldn't be alive with, which leads me to believe that he was being carried on by his sheer will to get his revenge with Vicious.

But then that would make him a wraith or something, and CB didn't really go into the supernatural.
>>
>>14754954
Revenant. A wraith is just a ghost, a revenant is someone who returns from the dead because of unfinished business, usually a person who themself did not lead a clean life (which as a triad killer, Spike didn't).

Angel Links is the bastard child no one wanted

Outlaw Star clearly had the best world building of the three. Hell, we never even got to see the government forces in action, their only moves were made through the MacDougall brothers.

Also a criminally underrated soundtrack done by Kow Otani which features his unmistakable brass ensemble.

The digital bikinis? That was actually creative thinking in finding a way to use scenes where characters are naked since in the past it was mainly used to remove blood.

Tenchi Muyo was the first to do it and they gave Melfina a black digital top and spats. Predictably there was no way they would be able to air the hot spring planet episode even if they censored it to hell and back.
>>
>>14755356
The human crew went back to doing what they were doing before they met each other being wanderers and outlaws. Unless you buy the idea Spike is alive, the "family/team" was gone by the end when Ein and Ed left and Spike's departure was the nail in the coffin.

All the Galatic Leyline is is a machine that allows one to connect/access with other multiverses. So in one universe Gene was fist fighting Hazanko where as in another universe gene was simultaneously fighting him with the ship, with the Leyline blending the two together because that is what it does.. It makes enough sense for me.

try had its moments, but it seemed too boring and formulaic compared to S1. Sekai and Yuuma were pretty boring for main characters, and of course the girl HAD to get the SD gundam which only acted as a support unit. There weren't even as many 'nudge nudge' in-jokes as S1. But my biggest problem was where S1 had a lot more tactics and flair to their fights (build knuckle notwithstanding), GBFT felt like nothing but particle hax BS, which made the fights a lot less interesting.
It wasn't as awful as people here say, but it was a bit of a letdown after S1

Most of your gripes apply to both shows, to be honest. SDs and Beargguys were almost exclusively piloted by females in little kids, particle BS abounds in all the top-tier Gunpla, and being kids' shows the plot was formulaic and predictable especially given the tournament style frame work. As far as in-jokes, there was plenty there. They've even reused some of the ones from from the earlier show.

Sekai isn't actually super OP, it's just the staff never bothered much to counter his particle haxz because they were over worked by the executive mandated 3v3 format.

>also, no hot milf
...Also yes, but rectified in the last thirty second of Island Wars.

>>14759031
>But my biggest problem was where S1 had a lot more tactics and flair to their fights (build knuckle notwithstanding), GBFT felt like nothing but particle hax BS, which made the fights a lot less interesting.
Yeah, and this is because Try's staff outright said they weren't able to do 3v3 teams, but were pushed into it from above to push more Gunpla.

When you aren't even up to doing Team based fights in the first place, a series with nothing BUT team fighting is going to suck when it comes to story pacing and fight choreography.

>>14759106

And yeah, they stuck to the originals plot formula, but had to compress three times the cast in there!

It's a real shame too, because the Team-based format could work, but you'd need a staff willing to write it, AND decompress things so you can actually focus on everyone fighting and such.

You're absolutely right about that one, but at the very least it fit better with China and Caro-rayne's demeanor and attitude. With Fumina being depicted as practically a female Sei, I expected more.

>particle BS abounds in all the top-tier Gunpla
Not all, only some. Abigorbine, Sniper K9, Fenice, and Papillon (debatably) all lacked hax. Even the Kampfer Amazing didn't really have any active hax, just knowledge of how to get the highest particle/performance ratio.

>a future that is essentially space-Hong Kong with Triad overlords
Cowboy Bebop, multiple times.

>constantly poses the question of what's the difference between a human and an X
Cowboy Bebop and Trigun both ask that.

>a world of science and Chinese taoist sorcery together
Cowboy Bebop did it. Trigun combined science and godlike powers to transform energy into matter and vice versa via the Plants.

>a space opera that actually has fucking aliens living among us and doesn't pretend humans are the only species out there
Cowboy Bebop and Trigun both did it. Bebop approached it as a combination of genuine alien life forms, but non-sentient, and genetically modified Earth transplants. Trigun had actual intelligent aliens living amongst mankind and plotting it's demise.

>a story that's about the sheer adventure far more than the destination
This might be where Outlaw Star is unique, but the destination being so crappy was a disappointment. And Bebop kind of didn't care about the destination until the last three episodes whereas Trigun it was always about the destination and being disappointed by it.

They are the Brain(Jim) and the Brawn(Aisha) even more then Jim and Gene.

Aisha is shown being worried about Jim several times and Jim blushes around Aisha.

Outlaw Star is designed much more like the outer space serials of the 60-70s with a slight modern flair over anything trying to be like "the real world, a century from now". The universe greatly changed with the discovery of mana and dragonite. I believe it's supposed to take place around the same point in history that Star Trek TOS does, the mid 2200s.

As a major fan of Outlaw Star myself, it's not worth it if you're going to watch it just because you think it's a way to get more Outlaw Star. The two characters that were featured in Outlaw Star that are main characters in Angel Links (Duuz and Valeria) have their appearance and personality changed noticeably. And for the worse Al/most none of the staff from Outlaw Star were apart of Angel Links and outside of some cameos, there is almost zero cohesion between the two shows and even contradictory information. They did get Takehiko Itō to write the one shot manga.

>Also a criminally underrated soundtrack done by Kow Otani which features his unmistakable brass ensemble.

Not just the brass, I was more impressed by the wind.

Blew me away the first time I heard it, though I always kinda felt that part in the middle that sounds like it was lifted from Train Train kinda clashes with the rest.

Honestly I never knew Otani did the OST for Outlaw Star. A lot of it doesn't sound anything like his typical stuff.

The latter half/ending parts of OS had fairly shitty/rushed screenplay. It was like they just came with whatever ASAP so that they could go shopping.

It was a shame, becasue characters, setting, atmosphere was so good. They wasted it to large degree. Same with Suzuka/Aisha, later on the didn't get to do anything important, only some mandatory battle partaking which the crew obviously didn't have any interest in animating.

Suzuka had a reason to fight.

She was on the trail of Hitoriga who killed her family.
