UC starts when human population gets really big and people need to start moving to space. IIRC, the earlier material mentions a 2050-ish date for UC 0001. Realistically, I can see UC 0001 being around 2100, though.

I thought I remembered the first colonies being built when the Earth's population hit 9 billion, but now I can't find a source. If that's the case then we aren't too far off now.

I don't know where this information from, because the website I'm looking at doesn't list sources—maybe it's from old official Gundam websites—but here are some dates I've seen:

>2045: Earth's population 9 billion, construction of Shangri-La begins. (That doesn't necessarily mean the construction is completed, only that it begins. UC 0001 is probably later.)

Of course, most of that was decided after the UC 0001 = 2001 AD in OP's pic was abandoned. (Unless the birth of the EF was originally supposed to be just a year or so before UC 0001. Eh, in retrospect, it's hard to guess exactly which dates have been retconned by now.)

Then there was the 1988 manga where UC 0001 is 1969 AD, like the Tranquility Era. So Zeta would occur in 2055, even sooner than in the original plan, and apparently NASA designed the first Zaku prototype.

Hm, what's Sunrise and Bandai/Namco going to do with UC chronology when we reach the year 2045, and nobody's started building space colonies yet? They ought to think ahead.

There's about one million "refugees" in Germany right now and the public opinion is already mostly negative.

Imagine if 5-10 million people suddenly wanted to get into Europe, Hans and Klaus would get the first man into office that promises a big fence and well-armed border guards.

Saudi Arabia already thought ahead, they're setting up high-tech border defences (Built by German companies), because they know people will try to flood into their country as things go to shit around them.
