Operationally? No change, because Amuro didn't make that much of a difference.

The machine guns have armor penetration, enough to injure or kill an enemy pilot, but a beam rifle still vaporizes and burns through anything and everything it hits.

Slightly better performance and backup weapons for when the beam rifle eventually runs out of energy.

If the Chobham armor was available he could tank some hits while doing serious damage to the Zeong.

If the FA modules would have existed by then, he would have curbstomped everything in his way.

It's not a slight difference, the Alex has about twice as much thrust and acceleration and can therefore move even more quickly. It rivals and beats some Zeta era suits. Yes, the specs are made up but those are the guidelines we have to work with.

Remember that moment where Amuro gets up close to Char and taunts him by saying "you can't use your wire guided arms at this range"? With the Alex, Amuro can back up that taunt with high penetration 90mm gatling guns.

Probably better than in the original scenario; mechanically, the Alex was noticeably better than the original Gundam, though it lacked the Core Fighter for survivability. In its place, however, was the Chobham Armor, and a Panoramic Cockpit block; the machine was designed for Newtypes, or at least, for Amuro specifically.

With a greater field of vision with a machine designed to be as maneuverable if not moreso, than the original Gundam, Amuro would have wrecked house at A Baoa Qu.

Against the Zeong, he would have definitely lost the Chobham Armor, but then he'd gain access to the arm gatlings. All in all, Amuro would have likely killed Char, without him being able to fulfil his desire for revenge against the Zabis. Kycilia would have survived and fled to Axis, and otherwise, things would have played out more or less the same, sans Quattro Bajeena being around for Zeta Gundam.

The Alex would probably have a good chance of coming out of the battle in one piece with Amuro piloting it.

It's essentially the Magnetic Coating Gundam with better thrusters, better cockpit view, better handling, and purgeable extra armor. Completely compatible with all of the regular Gundam's weapons too.

Alex had a cockpit and control scheme made especially for people with Jedi reflexes. They didn't even really know Newtypes where a thing for real until well into the war

They couldn't deliver it on time for A Boa A Qu, because it wasn't built and tested until the war itself was essentially over - not because they couldn't repair or deliver it. The battle of A Boa A Qu took place only 5 days after Bernie and Christina's fight. The Federation would have to start designing, building and testing it before the original Gundam was even running in to limitations to get it there on time.

One thing that really interests me about UC Gundam was how much restraint it showed.

Like, Amuro shows up in Zeta and has one hell of an entrance, but he doesn't dominate the show. He pilots the Rick Dias, a grunt suit, and has a basically average performance. The Gundam stays squarely in Kamille's hands, and Kamille's clearly the protagonist.

Then Amuro drops out of the show, and we only see later that yeah, he's still fighting the good fight.

Not to mention that Amuro only ever pilots two Gundams. (Not counting sidestories or whatever.) He gets the original and the Nu, and that's it. If they remade 0079 now, every suit he piloted would be a Gundam.

Speaking of non-gundam's piloted by Amuro the Dijeh was pretty great partly in how very clearly ungundam it is, while the noncanon Dijeh SE-R was outright SEX and one of my favourite SRW suits.

The Zeong is also far heavier. The Alex has 70% of the Zeong's thrust with fucking HALF the weight. Stop looking at one set of numbers like they have the full answer. Zeong's thrust vectoring is also a total shit compared the the Alex anyway.

The Alex limbs were still faster, and the -2 barely had more than backpack and foot thrusters which was in line with design philosophy at the time it was built. It was severely hampered in mobility versus the Alex, which followed later paradigms in sticking verniers everywhere. The Alex gatlings were still just below or at the effectiveness of early MS MG fire.

Regardless of the Zeong the Alex was a much better suit than the -2 and would have represented a massive upgrade in space.
