Was this movie a parody of everything from 80s anime? The ridiculous character designs with the massive wigs and shoulders, the mecha with the silly gaudy designs that look like they came from some toy commercial, the typical guy-so-pretty-he-looks-like-a-girl and his macho-guy-friend-who-wants-to-fuck-him (voiced by Charles vi. Britannia no less), the gratuitous bloody violence and nudity, and the utterly nonsensical plot and premise with lots of "homage" to Star Wars and its music- this was like the entirety of 80s anime jammed into an hour of animation. I haven't read the manga and don't care enough to, but how the hell can anyone make a long-running story of something so hilariously and unironically stupid?

Fuck, this shit makes G Reco look like Citizen Kane.

Citizen Kane is fucking garbage, I'm not surprised pretentious pseudo-intellectuals like you would hold it in such high regard. Especially coming from someone who couldn't even follow G-Reco.

This board is a fucking joke. I'd say your opinions are laughable but that would imply I could derive some pleasure from them.

Boring ass movie. Felt like I was watching some sort of half-assed ad for the manga rather than something that genuinely stood up on its own.

1/10 made me reply.

I hate Nagano, I hate his artsy crusade against anything that involves actually making his work known outside Japan, I hate his horrible attitude regarding anything that is NOT his work.

But FSS, and in particular that OVA is most certainly one of the best things ever made in japan during the 80s. Its production quality and soundtrack, its visual narrative and constant attention to details (and let us remember that Nagano only draws details, the rest is just a plaster of flat surfaces with nothing to talk about, including his characters).

Yes, the story is hard to follow because, like anything nagano, is supposed to be part of something bigger, that ova was meant to make people ask what was FSS, and it did so, for years to come.

Seriouslly, stick to your post 2010 anime cuz' you certainly can't watch anything else. Heck, I bet you've never actually seen Citizen Kane, which is, completly overrated.
>>
>>14747019
>who couldn't even follow G-Reco.
ye olde "it's not stupid, YOU'RE stupid" reflex still going, eh?
Any criticism must be decried as the stupidity of the viewer?
This is precisely why everyone outside of its fanbase hates it's fanbase. And to suck Tomino's dick in the same breath as bashing legitimate cinema that's praised by critics and filmmakers alike, no less.

This is literally bullshit that some assblasted faggot wrote on TV Tropes years ago after seeing Nagano's tongue-in-cheek LED Mirage quote about how it could beat up his favorite SRW characters, and people still think there's some truth to it? Why not actually look up the facts and see that the FSS design was mistakenly used in place of an L-Gaim one and Nagano didn't want FSS to have anything to do with L-Gaim.

I'll bet you also believe that Nagano stole his wife from Tomino too despite the fact that he was the best man at his wedding.

I've never seen so much stupidity and dumb speculation over a single person in the anime industry before.

Yeah, which is why he wrote a 5 page essay of nothing but praise for 0079 and Yas's the Origin manga, showed up at the Kunio Okawara's design anniversary or whatever last year to thank him for his work (the only Gundam designer to do so), and publicly endorse Linebarrels of Iron along with Yas.

But since he said one bad thing about Turn A, as a joking response to the one time Tomino trashed his L-Gaim designs, you automatically think he doesn't like ANYONE's designs. Get that hateboner out of your ass.

This I agree with wholeheartedly, though it's not that surprising considering how horribly US publishers fucked up selling FSS's manga here. In his eyes there are no fans outside of Japan, all because Bob McBurgers couldn't be assed to sell FSS in a normal store like B&N where people would actually be able to buy it.

>>14748417
There's actually a story arc that hasn't been fully explored that is pretty much L-Gaim.
>>
>>14748417
L-Gaim's hobbled by a very plodding second half with a lot of episodes that are just battles. That'd be okay if it wasn't 80's TV anime budget battles.

Was there a Gablet Gablae character in FSS? It's been a while since I read it but I don't recall any analogue to him in it. He was probably my favorite part of L-Gaim

Not sure, but I'd say Nei Mo Han could be Aisha or Li-ex's daughter.

There's that L-Gaim artwork with artwork by Nagano that pretty much proto-proto-FSS and that has a lot of hints in it, iirc. Daiba and Amandara Kamandara are the most obvious.

>This B.Temple is No.8. The first head liner was Duke Falk U.Ronher(!), No.4 of the Temple Knights. The B.Temple No.8 made eight sorties following this battle. In every mission except the last St.War. It is recorded that the formal head liners of B.Temple had been three during the 800 years before Posaydal left Pentagna. It was damaged in the Migun War in 3958 and was modified in the AP.

He is now the strongest head liner in both name and reality. He put Atropos into his Pdeen Auge and Lachesis of his bossom into the newly made Destiny Temple, the strongest heavy metal in Pentagna.

>He was said to be a genius for battle, having a super brain and good apperance, and is able to smash the enemy even if attached by twelve temple knights in a group. Later, Lachesis experienced a tragedy and was thrown to the end of space, but after her death Atropos stayed faithful to the king to his end. It seems that she charmed not only a human being but also a robot. How envious!

The MKIII was a variable space battleship rather than a heavy metal type, and the main weapon in Pentagna later became one of this type. IIRC

Amaterasu (Sopp) is super powerful and either he or his child is supposed to defeat literally Satan when he tries to enter the FSS Universe. As a result, Sopp spends all of his time building the AKD empire, recruiting the best warriors, and developing the best weapons and mortar headds to prepare for the ultimate battle. Its been a long time since I read FSS so I dont remember
>>
>>14751894
Yes, they literally called it Satan. At the time I thought the whole fairy tale story was going to be a metaphor for how humanity fucked up whatever used to live on the planet they were currently chilling on, but then the very same motherfucking helldemons show up out of nowhere to do...something? And some of the Mirage knights start killing eachother and suddenly there's a little shit cousin of Amaterasu vying for the throne...I think?

After the first few volumes, I was starting to wonder why so many consider FSS to be "impenetrable," but I think I might be scraping against the beginnings of that now.

...Or not, maybe shit will go back to normal and things will be better explained later.

Satan are really weird and not that relevant to the story. The only reason they even exist is so that the Dragons have a reason to exist as well. They're also the final bosses of the Taika Universe arc with Maximum and Silvis, which we never got to see in-depth either.

>>14751899
Sopp gathers up his best knights and The Will to find Lachesis after she got flung into outer space with KOG after Kallamity Goddarce was blown up IIRC. The SATAN are just one of the enemies he encounters along the way, but not the main reason.

I've been hearing that the new retconned timeline writes SATAN out of existence completely, but I've yet to see proof. If it is true though it just goes to show how unreliable the whole thing is.

To add to that, something that should be said about FSS is that it uses a lot of visual metaphor. That's how you get to see characters like Joker, who is the god of that universe being created out of thin air, or why Amaterasu's mom turns into a naked angel halfway through a conversation with him, or why Colus's dead spirit talks to Silvis, and most importantly, why Lachesis seems to "shift form" from her normal loli mode to Goddess mode in volume 3. The SATAN are the same, they're just an urban legend that somehow miraculously came to life because of Amaterasu's existence.

The key to it all is Amaterasu/Sopp himself. He's literally God, so he serves as a sort of gatekeeper between the fairy tales and the real world, but just by existing in the real world (with Headdliners and MH and Fatima) he brings in certain aspects of this fairy tale with him that can't be avoided. He's like a European settler bringing his smallpox to the Americas.

It's a neat concept but it doesn't come across as well-integrated because there's so much going on with the FSS universe already, and the SATAN stuff technically isn't even part of the FSS universe.

The most apt comparison I can think of is with Howl's moving castle, how Sophie shifts from old to young or how Howl shifts from handsome young man to a fucking dinosaur bird- it's not how they literally are, but a visual metaphor of their "true" characters. There's a lot of fairy tales that have a similar premise as this.

Granted, many people don't like Howl's, but it's easily the most fairy-tale like of Miyazaki's movies. I myself wouldn't have appreciated it as much if I hadn't read FSS beforehand and knew what he was trying to do with the story.

>The SATAN are just one of the enemies he encounters along the way, but not the main reason.

Actually, Sopp never encounters SATAN in his search for Lachesis. He goes through Stant and encounters something called "Monarch Sacred", which is a time capsule of all the events that took place before the Joker galaxy fucked itself and all its ancient super technology over with nonstop Buster Cannon nuke wars. So the enemies he encounters will be the remnants of the Super Empire. Which means LED Mirage vs Machine Messiah Yen Xing. Too bad Gothicmade changed all their designs before we could see this happen.

It's also the main reason he decides to bring the Empress Flame (which used Super Empire tech straight from the Yen Xings) with him, along with Fatima Tower (who isn't a Fatima but something of a representative for the Super Empire in a Fatima body)- both are to be used as keys to unlock "Monarch Sacred".

Basically, the situation is the exact same as the one for Nausicaa and the crypt.

And just before I forget, one thing I remember a lot of people took issue with was how Amaterasu abandoned the AKD for hundreds of years then magically came back one day to help Colus' descendant overthrow his own kingdom for no reason. It's because the AKD itself had become a twisted perverted mess of his original kingdom and was merely using its name. This was a parallel of an earlier scene where Nein (the ruler of the original Super Empire) came back from Stant (also where Amaterasu returned from coincidentally enough) after hundreds of years out of the blue to blow up this corrupt kingdom that was claiming to be the true descendants of her Super Empire. She ends up leaving behind the legacy of the Fatima and Headdliner with Ned Swans for the current FSS universe, much like Amaterasu would later leave behind his legacy of Fortune and Kallen for the Taika universe later on. The tale of FSS is just a cycle of metaphors and repetition (another reason why you get so many "reincarnated" characters that pop up in later arcs), meant to evoke ancient stories like those found in Greek anthologies.

I had to read this whole manga like 4 times over before everything clicked into place. It's an awesome piece of work but you really need to put a lot of time into it to truly understand it.

It's interesting how the Blood Temple's design completely changes between a single volume. The one that shows up for 2 panels pictured on the left looks like something GTM era Nagano would design.
>>
>>14776660
Nagano dislikes looking at his older drawings. He's a perfectionist so he hates going over what he already finished because he can recognize all the old flaws. As a consequence though a lot of his drawings go off model from the original designs and his stories don't follow a linear path, because he ignores the older chapters and what he drew in them.

Ever since Gothicmade though the new chalters of FSS have been a lot more on model. I suppose he's learned to tolerate looking at older art, considering he spent six years looking at the same drawings for one movie.
>>
>>14776861
I don't think those are really comparable to an entire design being changed between such a short period. I really like the Zambot-like crescent on the head.
>>
>>14776861
Sometimes you have to go off model

To be on model
>>
>>14777428
The only big design difference is the head. It's not totally new. A similar thing happened with how the Engage SR3 was drawn with a buster launcher in the lineart but given L-Gaim's wrist launcher in the manga, along with a good number of small details changed. Nagano just forgets.

It seems to be a common trend among monthly mangaka though, like Berserk and Jojo's.

I didn't realize how sad the story to FSS truly was until this 3rd or 4th re-read. The first few times I had a lot of trouble keeping track of characters and all the aliases they use along with the tons of designs present. That wasn't much of a problem this time. Especially with the really weird scenes or time skips into the far future/past.

During the L-Gaim chapter where Colus liberates the universe from Uplanda I was expecting a happy ending...but Queen interrupted the scene saying she was doubtful he was capable, and one quick look at the timeline shows that she was right...

Atropos meets a really sad ending in the future by requesting to be burned by the LED Dragon that she raised along with the planet being obliterated.

All the characters that we're familiar with ultimately meet their death in tragic ways. Civilization goes into a dark age.

Amaterasu goes on a long ass journey just to be reunited with his waifu

What the fuck Nagano. L-Gaim was so hopeful.

I wouldn't call FSS sad, it's a fairly accurate portrayal of what happens in human history over the course of thousands of years. It's the complete opposite of other mecha stories or even stories in general where the conflict decides the fate of the world/universe/etc. Because in FSS, none of it really matters. Civilizations rise and fall; but the human spirit is eternal. Other than the big battles written in the history books (like the timeline) everything will be forgotten with time. FSS is just a series of small vignettes that fills in those gaps. It will never technically end, because it's not a slave to time. Much like our actual history, the gaps of "what actually happened during these events?" can never be really filled. Once you get past all the characters named and techno jargon and start being aware of where each section goes in the timeline, then you begin to realize how much depth there really is to the way the story is told.

>Amaterasu goes on a long ass journey just to be reunited with his waifu

Not exactly, Amaterasu had basically become the new Noah, complete with his own Arc (The Will)- Lachesis finds him herself and together they create a new civilization in another universe using their god powers.

>L-Gaim was so hopeful.

Being forced to abandon all your friends and disappear from society forever just to take care of your mentally retarded sister is a hopeful ending? Unlike FSS, L-Gaim never took itself seriously where it counted because Tomino has no sense of tone and mood. It's funny moments are just a result of his incompetence as a director in some crucial areas.

Was never much of a fan of the mighty series.

Thanks for the clarification.
Patiently waiting for the GTM version of KAN...

The GTMs on the bottom have no MH equivalent If the kana is anything to go by

GTM engage SR1 is actually an improvement IMO. Never liked the engage series much

The FSS movie sucks, but not for OP's nonsense claims. It sucks because it's dull as fuck and half-asses what ended up being adapted. It removes all the humor from the original manga, cuts out a lot of the important details, including the entire beginning and ending of the part it was adapted from. This would be all fine and dandy if it made it work more smoothly as a movie, but all it does is make audiences even more confused. In a lot of ways it's like the old Jojo's Stardust Crusaders OVAs. Dull and poorly adapted, cutting out all aspects of the humor that defined Jojo's as a series, and ultimately not really feeling at all like the original manga. Both are also well-animated with great production values, but that's really all they have going for them. They're lifeless adaptations.

And the part it fucked up the most- the portrayal of Fatima. The manga makes it explicit that they're desired not because they're just pretty, but because they are symbols of social power and wealth. Juba wants them to elevate his social status, just like the Mortar Headd he acquired. In the movie it just makes him a dumb pervert who wants the Fatima only so he can fuck them. And then adds an unnecessary rape scene not from the manga with Lachesis just to drive this point home. It completely destroys the gravitas of the original conflict in the manga.
>>
>>14798943
Juba was a dumb pervert in the manga as well though. I mostly agree with you, the movie is a pretty pale shadow of the first book, but the FSS movie is also mostly just a novelty for people who've already read the manga for the most part. I never see it get recommended to people in a vacuum.

>Juba was a dumb pervert in the manga as well though

He was a fairly cunning politician who happened to be a pervert, but the objects of his lust were Sopp and Amaterasu, not the Fatima, which he treated more like prized objects. He didn't go from being a merchant to a ruler out of thin air. The movie doesn't show any shred of his competence.

It seemed to me he just wanted to wait until after the fixed debut to get at the fatimas, so as to not have rumours spread about him when everyone is in town. I agree that the extraneous scene in the OVA where he breaks in on laki and then has a stroke or something was a totally pointless addition, but I think the manga makes it pretty clear he wasn't gonna leave them untouched so to speak.

You'd think there'd be more social status to gain if the fatima paired off with headdliners of high esteem like Colus at the ceremony you hosted, rather then just keeping them around, but I'm no expert on Jokerian politics

The FSS movie had it light compared to the hack job that was Nausicaa.
>>
>>14798996
The main reason he wanted both Clotho and Lachesis was for his Mortar Headds, Devoncha, Barunja, and Helmine, the latter of which is actually pretty fantastic in the right hands and on par with a Siren or A-toll. I'm sure he would probably have his way with the Fatima once they were his but that was not his main goal. Imagine though, if he had actually succeeded and had paired one of them with Decors... he would actually have had a decent chance of crushing almost anyone who opposed him. Plus, he already had Sopp as his meight as the time (even though he was just a temp), and Sopp's own legendary reputation would draw other Headdliners to eventually join Juba as well. I'm sure that was original plan.

Regardless, there wasn't a hint of this in the movie.

>>14798999
Nausicaa at least worked as a cohesive movie. It took a ton of liberties but did a better job tying everything together.

Both it and FSS need full animated adaptations though.
>>
>>14799021
I dunno if a fully animated FSS could be feasible by any stretch of the imagination, but I'd sell certain parts of my body for just the Traffics chapters to get animated

Sure, if you think the MC becoming magical Jesus and stopping an entire war just by getting killed and revived in a giant bug stampede is a satisfactory ending.

Nah, It's a pretty great adaption. The humor in the FSS manga is mostly from lines of dialogue that aren't even bubbled and is more along the lines of Nagano fucking around.

>the important details, including the entire beginning and ending of the part it was adapted from

The aftermath of the Vatshu fight is used to introduce and explain the setting. It worked fine and animating that scene would have been ridiculous.

>>14798943
He does the same thing in the manga. His nephews even imply they fuck around with them.

>The humor in the FSS manga is mostly from lines of dialogue that aren't even bubbled and is more along the lines of Nagano fucking around.

Nope, it skipped entire scenes. The shower scene for example, originally written for laughs, is turned into some sort of unnecessary serious contemplative scene in the movie where Sopp thinks about Lachesis.

>The aftermath of the Vatshu fight is used to introduce and explain the setting. It worked fine and animating that scene would have been ridiculous.

That wasn't even the aftermath of the Vatshu fight. The aftermath of the Vatshu fight is that it's defeated and a long emotional moment where Est decides to "sleep" with it and her dead master. The scene popping up in the beginning doesn't work at all as a piece of an exposition because the characters there never even explain who they are, so the audience has no reason to care about any of them. And given the time period, animating the fight scene would have been easily doable. The only valid excuse is time constraints.

>He does the same thing in the manga.

Juba never attempts to rape the Fatima in the manga, and his purpose was never to keep them around just for sex. See >>14798978
By having him suddenly keep the Fatima just because he wants to have sex with them in, as portrayed in the movie, it makes him look like a complete moron instead of an actual threat. As for his nephews- another aspect the movie did fuck all with, especially when it came to portraying Decor's character.

The movie is just half-assed.

>>14799029
It would be possible, but the amount of effort needed for it would be astronomical. Not to mention how much CGI it would use.

Sounds more like a complaint about Shirow, much as I used to love the guy.

Thanks for the scan, anon! Where are they from? I always assumed that final image was some promotional stuff for the FSS movie.

What's the development timeline on all this? I mean, is this book something Nagano put out meant to be canonical to the L-Gaim TV show or something he released in-between that and FSS? So many questions.
