The youth of today will never know the power of steam

>there will be a time in the future where steam power is an afterthought
>there will be a time in the future when the steam engine will be an oddity even among hobbyists

Well, maybe not.
I once read a near-future sci-fi book in which a humanoid spy robot used a portable Stirling engine as a generator (stick one end into a fire and plug the other end into the charging socket), and Stirling engines aren't that far from steam engines: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/882130
Likewise, there've been several ideas for using steam engines to exploit the waste heat of internal combustion engines in cars: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exhaust_heat_recovery_system

Holy shit nostalgia trip right here.
He dug so hard.
Why does an inefficient form of combustion give people autist boners?
