The best kind of drug.

>Invasion of Astro Monster
Because Godzilla's dance is hilarious.
I know this is a Godzilla thread but I didn't want to make a thread just to ask this. Is there going to be a new Gamera film or was it canned since the trailer last year and with no news anywhere about it?
>>14734888
Simple, It's a B-movie that brought it's A game.

IIRC it was a proof of concept
So do you think the Godzilla series will be more serious from here on out?

>>14738772
Sometimes, one of the heads just has to have enough, anon. They're going to pay the price.
>>14738028
Why would they slip?
>>14738975
Shin doesn't seem nearly as toyetic as BioGoji or FinalGoji were. I don't think that kids are clamoring for ShinGoji toys and I don't think we'll be seeing new ShinGoji toys in 30 years time like we're seeing BioGoji toys now.
Besides that, they'll want multiple monsters and reuse of Showa monsters. It'll be tough to pull of a deathly serious movie that has Mothra, MechaGodzilla, or Gigan in it, but the studio will want them for toy sales.
Does shin godzilla have any version of the old godzilla's theme?
>>14739391
You're in luck, Shin is literally "Let's use that old thing".
Any news on a uk showing for the film, or have us Yurocucks been fucked over again?
>>14734888
Because it's genuinely a good film featuring a charismatic cast of characters, great score by Ifukube, and the some of the best special effects work in the franchise (Tsuburaya's last direct contribution).
> Durr hurr, stupid Godzilla dance
Not that serious and lasts but a brief moment. Get over it.

>Too deep to quit now.
God damn it. I'm going to have to buy this shit a third time and then watch them all again. Fuck you, Miramax!
>>14743073
Why not just get the region 3 rips w/ english dub? There was a torrent has posted in the last thread. The only shit one is Final Wars because the english speaking characters are dubbed into japanese and not subbed. Then burn the rips to dvds. Bam no more shitty Heisei dubs with va's that call Godzilla Godziller.
>>14738668
maybe he wanted to insult Zilla because he and his movie are pieces of shit, so he sent him a ham thinking he wouldn't want it.

TokyoScope's review of Shin Godzilla - https://youtu.be/5iHRSeJraKM
Here are some interesting highlights:
> (Allegedly) Anno handed Toho executives an 180 pg script, which translates to a three hour runtime, and they responded with: "You can't do that. There's only enough money for a 90-100 minute film." But Anno reassured them it was possible. He had anime voice actors record the dialogue for a test read in order to prove it could be done. This is where the quick speech rate in the film comes from. Cramming loads of information into a two hour film.
> The film was barely managed to get completed before release. It was a rush effort to get things done. Even to the point of last minute shooting on an iPhone 6 just to have enough footage. Shinji Higuchi admitted they were behind schedule. So, I can believe this claim.
> Shin Godzilla is an episode of Neon Genesis Evangelion (without the psychological element) and Godzilla (1954).
> It's almost a masterpiece. Satomi Ishihara's character and Anno's weak grasp on international relations holds it back from masterpiece status.
>>14749644
But it doesn't have a head!
No mouth hole or eyes, just gill flaps...
Now I know this Godzilla doesn't really NEED a mouth, but it does call into question why it's later forms have one.
>>14750320
To fire an atomic breath, anon. He has no tongue.
>>14750136
Did they seriously complain about Pacific Rim treating the kaiju as dinosaurs instead of natural disasters, and then clarify themselves by pretty much verbatim quoting Pacific Rim about how the kaiju are natural disasters?
>>14750136
Well, It was nice hearing some japanese critiques of the film at the very least.
Is the music from the trailers a part of the soundtrack?
>>14750543
Yes.
The themes are called "Persecution of the Masses" which is the theme of the movie and "Who Will Know (Tragedy)" which is Godzilla's theme.

>>14754486
>She dealt some serious damage to an otherwise thrilling show.
It wasn't just her, the whole show couldn't figure out what to do for it's middle portion and needed someone one to cause tension. It's not just one character, it was the entire plot centering around that character that ruined it.
>>14754645
Patrick is Megalon
>>14754698
Maybe I should give the show a rewatch. But you might be right. I just remember the quality dropping once she enters the picture. Though her character wasn't exactly much good either.
And maybe Satomi Ishihara's character has a similar effect on Shin Godzilla. I'm hoping not.

The only bad thing about her character is the English. And her Japanese as well since she has to do that stereotypical gaijin speaking Japanese with that gaijin accent thing. Don't want to spoil too much so I'll just say that I doubt her actual character will negatively impact your enjoyment of the film. Besides, if you've watch a fair bit of anime, you would have come across worse Engrish anyway.

Review from Bloody Disgusting:
> Shin Godzilla is basically Godzilla meets “House of Cards”, and has enough action to appease those who don’t care about a story.
http://bloody-disgusting.com/movie/3407732/shin-godzilla-surprisingly-grounded-compelling/
Funimation educating the masses about Godzilla. Do you agree with the author's thoughts?
His recommend films (aside from Gojira)
> King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962)- a truly legendary monster mash for the ages.
> Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964)- Mothra, a benevolent monster, is sent to stop a destructive Godzilla.
> Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991)- Godzilla’s very history is rewritten as he faces off with his greatest nemesis.
> Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974)- Godzilla meets his match when a robot version of him suddenly appears on Earth.
> Godzilla: Final Wars (2004)- an absolutely crazy science-fiction/martial arts/monster rumble flick that has to be seen to be believed.

>>14763901
And what's wrong with it? This suit is awesome.
>>14763766
Eh, personally, I would've gone with
>King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962)
>Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964)
>Destroy All Monsters (1968)
>Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971)
>Godzilla vs. Biollante (1989)
>>14763946
>Destroy All Monsters (1968)
Is this film still highly regarded? Seems there is more of a push against it these days.
Side Note: Remember all the people saying ShinGoji didn't look like Godzilla? The Legendary design looks less like Godzilla.
>>14763953
ShinGoji looks like ShodaiGoji, that is as Godzilla as you can get.
>>14763945
It looks too human.
>>14763953
It's boring as fuck until the climax. He does look a lot like ShodaiGoji.
>>14763936
The lesson is never to be born in Europe or its close vicinity if you plan on being a Godzilla fan.
>>14763766
I'm the one person that loves Final Wars to death, it's easily in my top five favorites of the franchise. However, I don't think I'd put it in my top 5 recommendations to newcomers unless they're the sort of people that I would recommend Versus to. I would probably put GMK in as the Millennium representative instead.
>>14763842
>>14763872
How can that be, when it's completely inferior to The Terror of MechaGodzilla? They're like 90% the same movie, only the first one has that ridiculous song that goes on forever and Godzilla develops magnetic powers for no reason. Terror strips out the worst parts of Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla, but retains everything that it did right and has a better human story.
>>14764065
I'll remember that next time

mangafox.
>>14764071
I would recommend Versus to anyone willing to have a good time to be honest.
>>14764397
yeah Versus is cool
>>14763888
Agree 1000%
>>14764474
Spooky
>>14764474
I'd appreciate Destoroyah more if he was less squat and ungainly bulky.
Imagining pic related extending its legs, straightening out and towering over Godzilla like a surreal goat-legged fucking otherworldly demon is creepy is fuck. It's a sight I'd like to see on film.
>>14764474
Love it.
If Shin Gojira gets a sequel, how would they do it?
>>14764516
It won't have one
>>14764521
That's up to Toho, isn't it? I mean, personally, I don't want one, but y'know...
>>14764522
They are moving to another projects with the character and Anno won't come back. Shin era will be Millenium 2.0 in terms of continuity.

Please, anything.

A shame, but on the other hand, whole point of Shin seems to be "Now that we got the Americans doing traditional Godzilla films with a continuing story, let's do some weird experimental shit back home"

No seriously back in 90's Godzilla movies were huge in India. Even now almost all godzilla movies on YouTube are Indian dubbed
>>14764618
This is true. Unfortunately, they liked the Hollywood version more, because they were'nt as many otakus like us. In fact, part of the marketing in other countries for the 1998 Godzilla was mocking campy Showa films, saying the new american one was better.
It's depressing.
>>14760938
is that shin zilla?
>>14764651
>Unfortunately, they liked the Hollywood version more
Yeah, I recently read a comment from an Indian guy on another site saying as much.
But what can you do. Global distribution (and as a result, acceptance) of media has always been a mess. America was actually lucky to get all the Godzilla movies. Yeah, many of the films took years to arrive and/or got drastically reedited, but at least the franchise built up a fanbase, which is enough for stuff like Shin Godzilla to get a limited theatrical release in the country. In a more ideal world, Godzilla would be reasonably popular in every country, the movie would be getting decent showings everywhere and we'd all have seen it by now.

Neat.

Fuck man, Baragon didn't deserve this shit. Couldn't even be in the title.

Too bad the suit actors can't really do much while acting. I think it'd be hilarious if the suit actors just constantly talked at each other while doing a scene like Popeye and Bluto muttering and breaking the 4th wall while fighting.

Shit now I have a BaraBoner

Shin has better ranged attacks, but Legend has better footsies and command grabs.
>>14765102
Shin is pretty indifferent unless you someone hit his sensitive back which'll prompt him to throw an extremely long temper tantrum.
>>14765176
*somehow.
>>14761633
>Decent beams
Legendary's beam looked pretty weak in the film senpai

Jim Pluff said Megalon, Anime News Network, and Kotaku reported Anno's comments inaccurately. Below is his response to Megalon's page.
> I know this page is popular, but this information is wrong. Not trying to stage a call-out, but I’ve already seen this translation circulating, so here’s the gist of this article: The other actors are interested in another film, and Anno says a sequel is up to Toho, but for him, “Mou ii.” (It’s enough/That’s it) Mikako then chimed in, “Well, if Anno isn’t doing it…” to which Anno replied, “Toho won’t let me after how hard this one was,” with a smile, seemingly in jest.
We can infer based on Anno’s past that he might change his mind (he originally had to be pressured into this film by Higuchi), but he’s not saying he’s not sure
Remember the Godzilla attraction at the Japanese Universal Theme Park? Update.

It's the best "hero" look for godzilla
>>14764071
ToMG's tone is completely out of whack, though. It's like if the Adam West Batman had the tone of the Christopher Nolan movies. Plus the plot feels like a setup for something much grander that never comes.
>>14766956
Yeah. ToM is certainly ambitious, though I don't think it quite makes it. The aliens and much of the acting (ranging from lackluster to cringe worthy) undermines the funeralsque tone. And while the monster action is neat, there isn't enough of it and it's somewhat out of place in a film as serious as this one.
Honda kind of lost his touch on his latter projects (DAM, Revenge, and ToM).
>>14767007
He just didn't give a shit anymore.
>>14767016
> Ishiro Honda turned down Toho's offer to direct Return of Godzilla (1984)
What did he mean by this?
>>14767051
Wasn't him supposed to return for Mechagodzill II but died a little before he could?
> Anno had decided to use Ifukube's music while writing the screenplay and attempted to adapt the old Ifukube tracks to modern stereo settings but the task proved too daunting and eventually settled on using the mono mixes instead.
Remixing or rescoring would have been nice. But I'm thankful for what we got.
When it gets to the west it will become a 45% at best.
>>14767307
Not with Legendary's film sitting at this score. Putting Shin Godzilla down that low would be the sign of an obvious agenda.
>>14767336

>>14767343

>>14767453
So? It's a limited 5-day release. Regardless we're getting a dvd in a few months and it's subbed not dubbed. So who gives a fuck about what normies think about Shin? I don't stop and think
>OH NO! Normies might not like the things I do!
The box office returns that matter are in nip land and they're overwhelmingly positive. We'll likely see more Godzilla movies until they fuck it up again.
In April of 2015, Godzilla was declared a Japanese cultural ambassador, and is largely seen as a (perhaps kitschy) symbol of Japanese pride. Today, he is untouched as a pillar of Japanese patriotism.
So when America comes along to claim Godzilla as something of its own, Japan bristles a bit. In the final film of the Heisei era of Godzilla (1995’s Godzilla vs. Destoroyah) the series was effectively ended. In 1998, Roland Emmerich directed his rather notorious American version in an attempt to move the monster stateside. Not only did Japan retaliate by rebooting the franchise with Godzilla 2000 (1999), but they eventually featured a scene wherein the new Godzilla killed off the monster from the 1998 film, claiming that America only thought it was the real Godzilla. It’s famously the shortest fight in the Godzilla series. Japan brought the Millennium era to an end in 2004 with the not-very-good Godzilla: Final Wars.
Then America got cheeky again in 2014, and Gareth Edwards released his own version of Godzilla, again, called merely Godzilla. Japan, however, has chosen not to stand idly by for what they may see as a misappropriation of their own cultural ambassador, and has once again retaliated by rebooting Godzilla on their own terms.
What is audacious about this remake is not the liberties taken with Godzilla lore, but rather how faithful it is to the canon established by Toho Pictures in the 1950s.
America, as it has done with coffee and French fries, upsized the monster. Here, it is smaller and so scaly and stiff as to be almost rock-like.
Forget your computer-drawn beasties - this is old-fashioned man-in-rubber-suit stuff. But the thing is no less menacing and it can also shoot killer rays, like in the old days.
Co-director and writer Hideaki Anno (the Evangelion anime trilogy, 2007-2012) plays this like a realistic political thriller.
>>14767876
>retaliate
it's not as though they didn't make the deal themselves (toho and sony/tristar). It is true they didn't care for the American adaptation though.
>>14767876
I don't think Toho was offended at all by Godzilla 2014. All reports on their reaction seem to suggest that they were very happy with the results, enough to include him in the Bandai Godzilla game, make various merchandise the same way they would for their own movies, and allow Legendary to use Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidorah in future movies. Shin Godzilla is less retaliation and more like, "Let's make another JP Godzilla too now that he's popular again". They probably weren't willing to sit by and wait until 2019 for the next Godzilla film to surface.
>>14767876
>Forget your computer-drawn beasties - this is old-fashioned man-in-rubber-suit stuff.
>America, as it has done with coffee and French fries, upsized the monster.
Did guys did they research alright.
>>14768075
Yeah, Toho liked 2014 a lot. Its success is what prompted them to come back and do more Godzilla
>>14767453
Aside from some questionable effects work, none of these have to be knocks against the film. Sounds like Anno has made 12 Angry Men + Gojira (1954) + Neon Genesis Evangelion.
12 Angry Men is almost exclusively set in one room and is centered around a specific case. But that didn't stop it from being a great film. Just imagine Godzilla on trial, with the best and brightest of the Japanese trying to figure out what to do with him.
If the characters are interesting and the editing/pacing/score is on point, then we might have ourselves something interesting. Seeing that mostly only Westerners are complaining, I'm assuming most of the dialogue went over their head. In most cases that wouldn't result in a good time.
>>14768193
As far as I know, Japan made husbandos and waifus out of this movie, so they may be quite actually interesting and fun to watch.
>>14767957
>It is true they didn't care for the American adaptation though.
no it isn't.
>>14768410
They liked 2014 fine. It was 1998 that they didn't like, and that's partly because it's a shitty movie whose badness transcends fandom and cultural boundaries.
Pretty much the whole film (condensed)
