There are parts of the series I really like, in terms of pacing and what not. But then we get to how utterly retarded the Guntank, G-Bull, and core-block system are, as well as all the QUALITY and "Zeon can't possibly be this retarded... oh wait."

The series does a far better job building up Char and Garma, as well as Ramba Ral. It also does more justice to Jaburo and Operation Odessa. The movies really trim a lot of content.

But Movie 3 is far and large the superior way to experience the final arc of the series.

But I wish they kept "Uchyuu yo" as the track that plays over Amuro's return to the crew instead of "Meguriai". As much as I love "Meguriai". Should've saved it until the credits proper.

I'm watching the series for the first time, after previously watching 0079 a year or so ago.
This line just caught my eye, I always assumed Char was a veteran, but does this just mean the federation only had conventional weapons before the development of the gundam, or was he actually just considered a hotshot newbie with little to no battle experence.

The movies are superior though, there's no need to watch the series.

I watched the series and the movies after that. 0079 was easily one of the worst old anime i've seen, the "comedy" is jarring and the super robot thing is awful.

I don't know why people give ZZ such a bad time(maybe because it came after Zeta) if 0079 does everything worse than it while having garbage animation to boot.

For whatever reason, I just couldn't make it through the TV series for 0079. I "watched" the first five episodes of it but I just kept getting way too close to falling asleep, it was boring as shit. It's not even the fact that it's so old either, i've watched all of Ashita no Joe, Lupin Part 1 &2, and Rose of Versailles and none of them ever came so close to putting me to sleep.

On the other hand, the movie was much more easy to get through. I probably would have just skipped to Zeta if I hadn't watched it, so i'm glad it exists.

Aside from the animation, you have yet to list any real reason. Even then, while yes it is full of QUALITY, that is the weakest reason for something to be better. By that regard SEED is better then a good amount of mecha. ZZ has serious issues in regards to the fact that they wanted to make the show a more light hearted and comedic teenage mecha show but then mid-way it starts becoming more serious, which is very jarring. 79 did have a few comedic moments, sure, but it started with the premise of being a serious work and those moments are few and far between.
Now then, clarify what you mean by "super robot thing"
Plus, do not pretend that ZZ doesn't have any "super robot thing" bullshit, it too had newtype-isms, the MC's imouto got captured by the enemy and is held hostage and used to intimidate him in comedic ways, everything with Chara, Plu gets a lady boner and defects to become Judeau's imouto and has an evil twin, and the neo-zeon forces often are portrayed as incompetent to a comedic extent and do excessively evil stuff without any real purpose other then to make them evil. All of those are more super robot then the stuff in 79.

I vaguely recall seeing the movies on fansub lists, but I thought them putting the series out on LD in the late 90s was, like, a big deal and the series hadn't gotten a home release before that.
