But Devilman is pretty much undeniably /m/. It's borderline mecha on its own, when you consider that it crossed over with Mazinger and also features robot~esque designs like in >>14730112 . Add to that it appeals to most mecha or robot enthusiasts with its action, gore, and Go Nagai of course.

It's just one of those edge cases where enough /m/-content converges to make a technically non-mecha show into an honorary and completely legal /m/ discussion point.

But I don't understand why this is still a partisan issue. Has Devilman ever *not* been considered /m/? If toku can get a mod's pass, surely this and related works can.

I think the design changed along with Nagai's style, which got worse over time. There are exceptions like Shin Violence Jack where Nagai's new style works very well and feels kinda Ishikawa-influenced but generally it got worse. Look at this Devilman, he looks like shit.

Also, I love that they specifically made a figure of the classic manga one. I like the cartoony face along with how slim he is; if you look at >>14731581 it's hard to understand how Devilman was a significant influence on the Eva unit designs, but if you look at the old one it's instantly noticeable.

Devilman isn't /m/ because he's not a machine. It doesn't matter if it crossed with getter or some other /m/anga and if >>14730112 looks robot like to you then try reading later chapters of Bastard!. Toku got a pass because it actually is /m/ (big giant robots piloted by main characters), same goes for first Kamen Riders since their successors use some kind of magic-asspull powers.

How do I into Devilman?
From what I've seen and heard it seems dope. But there's so much stuff, that it's tough to know where to start and what to avoid. It isn't quite as popular as Gundam or something either, so there's not alot of recommendations online to go by.

Read the manga. The canon is Original Manga > Shin Devilman > Devilman Lady > Devilman Saga. Everything else is spin-offs and what-ifs.

As far as art style goes, the original manga is raw as hell. Great stuff.

Takayuki Takeya's redesigns are better than average, and Katsuya Terada drawing Devilman is fantastic, as expected of him. Sentinel's figure is also good.

Yasushi Nirasawa's redesigns (much like his whole oeuvre) are all over the place, ranging from awful (Amon OVA, Akira/Ryo) from pretty damn great (Jinmen, Mao Dante). I'm rather fond of his early Amon/Devilman designs as a mix of his style and Nagai's.

I don't think he was talking about the violence. If you read the whole series and then go back to those fights, it's kinda messed up. In the very first fight you have people going all "Lord Amon, why are you killing us, we're your friends! Amon is going crazy!" or something like that, and in the Sirene fight you kinda feel bad for her, having to fight against a man she loves, and then sacrificing a man who loves her to survive. If you consider that mankind's extinction is inevitable, then Devilman is just a useless bloodthirsty berserker who i weakening his own forces in the battle against God for no reason. Devilman is no hero, at least not until Lady.

This still feels a lot like the standard superhero manga from postwar Japan. Even Kamen Rider is fighting against something he can't stop. And Arashi goes into a journey to kill everyone associated with the bad guys even if they're just living their lives peacefully. That manga is probably worst than Devilman in this aspect. No wonder both series had the same editor. There was just this feeling of uneasiness back then.

And well, Devilman still fights for what he believes it's the right thing. He's a superhero living by his own sense of justice. He wants to protect humans from demons, he sees himself as their savior. And again, is the relationship between Amon and Silene there from the beginning? I don't remember it being mentioned in the old print of the manga, like it was something Nagai thought about later like in those reprints you see Akira's parents being killed when they never mention what happened to them originally. Or those scenes from the past Earth when demons still dominated the planet.

I'm the guy you're replying to; yeah I know there was a general trend of "edgier" leads, even Tezuka was pressured into it by an editor years before Devilman existed. Hell you don't even need to post Arashi, the 00 cyborgs saw themselves as "manufactured killing machines" and not "heroes" from the get-go. There's just... you know, a difference between "Devilman was a simple superhero story until Nagai went nuts with it" and "Devilman was part of a general Japanese trend towards less blatantly heroically-mannered heroes".

I was reading Sabu & Ichi and the part from V1 where Ichi has to kill his master reminded me of the similarly well-executed and not overly dramatic execution of Devilman having to kill Jinmen. I wonder if Nagai starting off under Ishinomori instead of Tezuka may be a part of why he was good at delivering silent, subtler scenes like that because god damn did Tezuka love his words.
