I watched the old Force Five version back in the day. My personal feelings were: Grandizer>Starzinger>Getter Robo G/Gaiking(tie)>Danguard Ace

But thinking about it now what I didn't like then (too much plot, too little smashing) might appeal more to me now.
>>
>>14726829
>Starzinger

It was weird how even in the watered down US version they still had the MC being a complete raving lunatic

Apparently in the manga, the robot only appears in the last 2 pages
>>
>>14726847
Well, he is Spess Wukong after all.
>>
>>14724150
What shitposter?
>>
>>14728260

Has the Japanese version been subbed at all? I love sci fi reimaginines of ancient mythology or literature
>>
>>14727718
That's true, but it's used, which lead to some very strange moment when the characters pilot the robot, get kidnapped or save the day without any sign of the actual robot.

The manga is very disapointing even for someone like me who usually like Matsumoto's style, it's too incomplete. I don't know about the anime.
>>
>>14728779
>the characters pilot the robot, get kidnapped or save the day without any sign of the actual robot.
hahaha holy shit Lazy would it have been that fucking hard to have an assistant just draw the damn robot
>>
>>14728800
Well I guess that was somehow a part of a deal with the anime production or something like that. It's still wierd.
>>
>>14728800
I got the impression that he really didn't want to have the robot around in the first place.
>>

7 episodes of the series and the two movies were, although I've only found the movies.

And the next page.

To be fair, it wasn't supposed to be the real Danguard but some kind of a bait. But that's the closest thing to a proper appearance of the robot itself.

The first page I sent was suppose to be the real thing. And the Last page >>14727718
previously posted is the only page we see the robot fully assemble, as we didn't even see part of it before.

Sorry for the crappy quality and translation, I thought there was english scans of it. If not does someone is interested in french scans ? As you can see I can't translate shit, but french may be easier to translate than moonrunes.
>>
>>14729555
That's a shame, the danguard itself isn't really bad looking, it's not really anything special but it's kinda nice.

>>14729536
For once I guess I agree with you, Danguard Ace is not one of his greatest work.
>>
>>14729562
>If not does someone is interested in french scans

I'd like some since I don't think there are any Japanese scans.

How close is the story compared to the anime version?
>>
>>14729577
>danguard itself isn't really bad looking

It looks really good in the Mahoroba movie that'll never be realized.
>>
>>14729603
I will try to scans the first chapters this week end then.

I didn't watch the anime unfortunately. But there is no fights or episodic material in the manga.

>>14729605
Is this a design from Matsumoto ?
>>
>>14729612
Nah, I forgot who was slated to do mechanical designs for the film.

http://ourstarblazers.com/vault/?s=mahoroba&submit=Search

Strangely Leiji seems to be one of the few scifi authors during the mecha boom that almost completely avoided them. Kind of impressive. Imagine if giant robots appeared in Yamato?
>>
>>14729603

The tv series is quite different.
>>
>>14729068
This. It's painful to imagine Lazy trying to draw some robot action scenes.
>>
>>14729523
That's Leiji for ya.
>>
>>14729640
>Imagine if giant robots appeared in Yamato?
Do you mean the series he didn't created or had the final word for anything? Yeah.
>>
>>14729670
I didn't mean it in a bad way.
>>
>>14729677
I've explained this to you before, but Leiji pretty much rewrote the original concept proposed for Yamato.

>Matsumoto: That was quite unexpected. The proposal had already been accepted and Yomiuri TV had decided to air the show. The only concept at the time was “Yamato goes somewhere.” There were no details about why Yamato was going to Iscandar.

> I remember I created most of the basic stories and ideas for episodes, including settings and details of battle scenes. I didn’t give out my ideas grudgingly, because it was a group-work.

>Initially, I was brought on only as Yamato‘s art director, but once production got underway, I became the overall director of the series. They left everything up to me, from the original designs to the final cut, and I kept changing things to suit my whims. In fact, I ended up doing about half of the first series’ storyboards myself.
>>
>>14729694
>My storyboards tended to stray from the written scripts, particularly in the first five episodes. I changed a lot of the dialogue and situations through the storyboards, since they lacked the feeling I wanted to express. Before I realized it, I had re-written complete episodes. Whenever I watched the final footage, though, there was always something that I wish I’d done better. I’m familiar with my weak points, and seeing the finished product at least allowed me to examine them for my own improvement. Some scenes are embarrassing to me now, and they annoy me to no end when I see them.

From another interview:
>Matsumoto: It was a grotesque image of the battleship encased in rock with only the bridge sticking out. It was not romantic at all. So I rethought it from there. I rewrote it to include Starsha of Iscandar and the Cosmo Cleaner D. My credit in the first series was ‘Supervisor,’ but actually I revised the entire concept into an original draft.

>Even the first episode title changed, and it was rewritten four times. I drew about half the storyboards for the 26 episodes. I worked on the composition of scenes and the colors for Yamato. I ended up appointing colors for a lot of things.

The wave motion idea was also his.

>Matsumoto: There’s a chapter in Lightning Ozma [1961] that features a rocket named Space Battleship Yamato. Much later, Yoshinobu Nishizaki started to plan the TV anime series with that name and hired me to supervise the art. I looked at the planning book and said “this is not Yamato, it looks terrible,” and I redesigned it.

>As for the wave-motion theory, my younger brother Susumu was a laboratory student at Kyushu University, and he helped develop it. Of course, the main character Susumu Kodai is named after him. By the way, the main character in Lightspeed Esper [1969] is also named Susumu Kodai. When developing Yamato, the main character’s names started out as Jyuzo Kodai and Susumu Okita.

It's always quite hard to know if the infos on those kind of interview are genuine, time often altered memories, and Matsumoto isn't the most modest man on earth too. He could misremember or simply make it up fact at his own glory (but I doubt that, he is probably overestimating his involvment).
>>
>>14729790
Most of these quotes are from the 70's, mate.
>>
>>14729745
The green guy makes this show hard to watch, iirc.
>>
>>14729812
Okay, so time didn't alter anything. But my point was to not blindly trust statements of individuals, interviews are sometimes gold mines, but like anywhere, there is contradictions.

I am not telling you that Matsumoto didn't influence Yamato in many ways, but that his statements must not be taken as truth, but simply as his point of view of the production at the time, and that's imply mistakes.
>>
>>14729790
>Matsumoto isn't the most modest man on earth too

That's right. I would like to see such claims coming from other members of the staff.
>>
>>14729898
Yes anon, I'm not going to believe the guy that actually worked on it and has a say on the thing but I'm going to believe YOU, the LAZY MATSUMOTO shitposter on a vietnamese tapestry imageboard.
>>
>>14729904
>Nishizaki: It seems like I’m the only one involved with it as a big hit at this time. The man of most distinguished service to the movie is Toshio Masuda. In addition, I cannot forget Leiji Matsumoto, who developed the story and SF settings for TV and Eiichi Yamamoto, who held up the human drama aspect.
>>
>>14729919
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-11-26/leiji-matsumoto-settles-suit-over-plagiarism-claim

Yeah, he's sure not a man full of himself.
>>
>>14729949
Katsumata: When Yamato became an opportunity for me, Mr. Toshio Masuda and Leiji Matsumoto were already directors, so now there are three of us. Mr. Masuda is not involved with the animation, so he supervised the storyboard and will continue with the editing. In the case of Mr. Matsumoto, he worked on everything up to color appointment, but will not participate in the editing. So in my case, you could refer to me as the foreman. (Laughs)
>>
>>14729962
>Interviewer: So you didn’t touch any of the directing?

>Masuda: Leiji Matsumoto took charge of that.

>Interviewer: What was your role in the second film, Farewell to Yamato?

Masuda: I’m a layman when it comes to both anime and SF, so it began with Leiji Matsumoto and the SF writer Aritsune Toyota developing a story for Mr. Nishizaki and me.

^ For Be Forever Yamato
>>
>>14729970
Another Be Forever Yamato interview:

>Interviewer: What point of contact do you have with Leiji Matsumoto?

>Udagawa: Although I’m in charge of all the character design this time, Leiji Matsumoto naturally built the world of Yamato first, so I work hard to maintain the image. But he was not especially concerned with character design this time, so we haven’t had much contact about that. Rather, I kept it in mind to follow the image of The New Voyage after my meetings with Yoshinobu Nishizaki.
>>
>>14729980
>Interviewer: Where did the idea of the Wave-Motion Gun come from?

Nishizaki: An illustration done by Leiji Matsumoto had a firing Wave-Motion Gun. All it took was some preparation. The engine room was its starting point, so we concentrated on how to make an engine room.

And here's an interesting interview:

Wow calm down mate, I'm the guy who posted the crappy pictures. I not saying you should belive me more than Matsumoto, but that you should not belive me or Matsumoto.

Gunbuster's ~250m as mentioned, but there's the city sized Transformers that get pretty damn big, and anything named "Macross" from the 80s and early 90s. (Well, anything named Macross at all really, but the Quarter classes and their ilk are only like 400m or so I think?)
