You know, I have a theory about this show.
The lead writer wanted to make a comedic slice of life anime about a samurai waking up in modern Japan and going to school.
But the studio thought that wouldn't sell and told him to make it a mecha show.

He reluctantly caved and reworked his script to feature the mandated aspects.
But he resents them all the same. Which is why for every 5 or 6 minutes of well choreographed action, we have to pay for with 2 episodes of uneventful teenlife bullshit.
Even during the biggest crisis of the show, he manages to insert 2 episodes where everyone is just spinning their wheels. He even finds an excuse to have the fucking kids go back to school.

I don't have the least doubt that this series would have been much better off without them.

Taking all of this into account, I can buy Kuromukuro's alien invasion story having room for some SoL breaks in the action with his negative and unbearable points. I don't really like the SoL side of the story and the unbearable negative points of this series, I generally find them intolerable, weak, uninteresting, unnecessary, boring and bland, especially compared with the more serious mecha/alien invasion side of the story. But this is mainly due to Yukina and to the characters I like to call the three idiots. Most of the time, they're not funny, they're not amusing, they're not interesting, they're in fact usually annoying. I don't know if they're completely beyond salvaging, but they're certainly not working as good comic relief characters or anything else for me.
Anyway, P.A. Works is well-known for its SoL/"cute girls doing cute things"/''high school girl dramas''/''moeblob high school girls''/ content, so I can understand it wanting to blend mecha/alien invasion with SoL, comedy, cute girls doing cute things, high school girl drama and moeblob high school girls. I think it handled this abusively in the show's first half, but the SoL and the negative and unbearable points of this series are now seeming like unwanted distractions, so I hope we're mostly/entirely free of it for the remainder of this series.

Sasuga PA Works, still managed to slip SoL moments of making movie in this near-finale episode. I didn't flip my table as promised coz they at least still have the decency of not doing it in episode 22 after that big siege. Oh well, at least it's agood medium for Muetta's chara-development and Ouma. Other than that, there's nothing noteworthy in eps 23. I just hope that, at the end of the series, PAW does not succumb to tropes and kill our red-Piccolo in a blaze of glory just because he already felt some fullfilment. That would be totally obvious. Would be a lot more interesting if Zeru can survive the series and continue living on Earth like Piccolo or Martian-Manhunter

I'd say that some of the comedy does deserve a positive mention.
While the fish-out-of-water idea has been done before, they did find new and endearing ways for Ken to deal with the modern world.
Especially when he eventually begins using modern technology.

And I'd add that there are some endearing and fun side characters apart from the high school setting.
