Orguss (best OP in my opinion) and J-Decker can wait til last. Layzner is a little weird but the OVA makes up for it and the fights are absolutely amazing throughout. Vifam is a bunch of kids trying to survive a space war but has plenty of fun parts in it, and the OP and ED are great to listen to. Shin Mazinger is good, especially if you're interested in Mazinger but can't quite make it through the older series yet (you should try later on though). Dunbine is fantasy and has some TOMINO parts but a great ride. Gorg is one of my personal favorites, it's basically YAS at his most free. King Gainer is tons of fun and super genki tomino as opposed to his Zeta/Victory/Ideon moods, great fights, great characters, great fun even if the story isn't always the priority. Xabungle is also an enjoyable Tomino ride, it's a comedy but it can get serious if it needs to. Orguss is decent, not amazing but there are plenty of things to love about it, and J-Decker is fun but you might need some time to start liking Brave series. If you're not afraid of more super robot-style series then jump right into J-Decker if you want.

It has great animation and music, but an extremely rushed plot that is lopsided and a poor retelling of the original Macross narrative. It really is style over substance: the anime movie.

It does have some of the most detailed animation I've seen in a movie, which makes well worth watching regardless.

All the Macross movies basically expect you to have seen the series and serve as this cherry-on-top thing.

SDF especially. You've just watched one of the worst animation jobs you could possibly expect in a popular franchise done by a team that almost lost an entire episode on a train, had to reanimate an entire episode because it was that insulting and featuring the work of such great names like Gainax when they give ABSOLUTELY no fucks about quality.
Now you can sit back and enjoy a short version that's all just pure music and animation porn.

Macross 7 also had pretty lousy animation and Pure, Dynamite 7 rank as the best ones around.
Frontier broke the tradition somewhat but damn if you can call an Eureka 7 reference performed by a fucking Macross Quarter anything other than mech porn.
