The EVA units are a big hit or miss, it doesn't help that they're actually giant humanoids with plates of armor and cool helmets.

I'm not a fan of the EVA units, they have cool bits like the whoe entry plug mechanism and the helmets, but all the rest is basically a giant lanklet wearing a bad Toku costume.

If you wanna talk about the ships, helis or tanks though, they're top notch stuff, the vehicles and attention to details like the weapon hanger buildings in Neo Tokio is great, I think that's a really unappreciated part of the Eva series, nost people focus on the units and miss a lot of cool particulars.

I mostly like them, but I have a few issues. First is that there isn't really armor on the arms, just sort of a rubbery coating. I'd like that to be replaced with some plating. Second is that their waists are ridiculously thin, so the point I have trouble believing they could hold the torso up. That's arguably a good thing, it makes them look skeletal and inhuman, but I'd like a bit more bulk there. If there was, though, the upper torso should be enlarged, too. They enlarged the waists in Rebuild and it just makes the Evas look like one big tube, too lanky.

I wasn't a big fan of the show at all but the Mass Production Evangelions are one of my favorite designs of anything /m/. Of all of the eva units they have the best blend of organic and inorganic features and make the perfect example of a biomechanical weapon in fiction.

Sucks that they were only really relevant for about 15 minutes in a movie that droned on for way too long.

The EVAs are pretty cool, and I like how they reflect the character of the pilot in a not too blatant way.
NERV HQ is definitely the real star of the show though. The servos, the launch sequences, the control room with the massive holographic map, that clock that everybody recognises,the EVA restraints, the rifle pods, the massive spaces. I know that sort of thing is par for the course with mecha but they really made a great example of it.

My gripes with the designs of the Eva units are that they all seem to have the same sleek humanoid body shape, but then they have these big doofy shoulder fins because they thought that that was the best solution for a place to keep a knife. Unit-01 goes another step further and has a big unicorn horn and chin for whatever reason. It just seems so counter-intuitive to its own design language and creates a sort of "clash" in what they were going for. The simple human form makes a lot of practical sense and then to just go off on such a tangent from the shoulders up just doesn't make sense with what's going on below that line.

I am honestly convinced Eva fans haven ever seen anything that isn't Eva.

the shoulder fins are more than just knife storage; they had extra batteries, jump jets, those spears in EoE and the F-Type had full blown beam cannons that popped out of its shoulders. in fact the shoulder fins are one of the most important elements of the Evas (along with the broad shoulders in the original TV versions) that automatically distinguished the Evas from every other blocky giant robot out there is well as Toku's humans in rubber suits. they were oddly alien designs with exaggerated proportions that sat perfectly in the uncanny valley between humanoids and robots.

With the right mindset an experienced mecha fan can justify almost any protuberance. With EVA it's especially easy because we have the "AT field", so for decorations which can't be justified any other way you can just say that it's probably there to help project/amplify the AT field. As for the shoulder pylons, they also make a good anchoring point for the restraining bolts

Any story that has fully realized themes present in its narrative. Evangelion has pseudo depth because it is actually a very shallow anime paired with lots of vague imagery.
