***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

== ACE PILOT GROUP BUILD ==

Starting September 1st, you have two months to build, customize, and paint a mobile suit of your choice into your own personal design. This can range from just a repainted Zaku to a kitbashed Gundam loaded with any spare rifles and Rocket Launchers you can find. Any suit from any series is fair game, just stick to 1/144 kits and you're good. When you're done feel free to post it in the thread, but also send pics to [email protected] so that all the entries can be judged/posted at once when the group build is over (If you don't want to be judged for the contest just feel free to mention it when you send in your pics).

Prizes include:
>1st Place: Any HG kit under $25 + an Action Base 2
>2nd Place: Any HG kit under $15
>3rd Place: An Action Base 2
(Note: Shipping is to USA and Canada only)

Group build ends on October 31st, get building!

Yes.

Build Mk. II is just the 11 year old Mk. II 2.0 with a booster and slightly different head and chest.
I've heard good things about the Sengoku though.

You *can* print your own (all you really need is the paper, which you can probably find online), but the biggest problem is that most printers can't print white, which limits a lot of what kind of decals you can make
>>
>>14704580

I see. Thanks, I thought that it was pretty much a long shot. I order from samueldecal or other third parties and was just wondering if it could be done independently.

Right now I'm too new to use lacquers so I buy tamiya/vallejo from scalehobbiest because it's cheaper there than on amazon and they generally have what I need in stock.

This is also just a general question, but how often do you guys run out of primer? I feel like I'm just tearing through these spray cans after like one HG. Do you guys buy in bulk or something?
>>
>>14704635
Thank you
>>
>>14704612
Getting new nippers for every 5 kits is kind of overkill...

A knife / blade, I understand, but nippers?
>>
>>14704678

I've started changing out my blade after every 1-2 kits because the quality of xacto blades has seriously, seriously declined.
>>
>>14702184
>Left trigger hand

What kits come with left trigger hands? I love me some dual-wielding.
>>
>>14704699
That's pretty reasonable. 2-3 kits depending on the grade seems to be the limit before rust and nicks set in.
>>
>>14704575
Thank you. I mainly like the Builds' guns, but if they're on a not-very-good frame then I guess I can get something else instead.
>>
>>14704678
I take my nippers seriously

Also I use it as an excuse to go back to GundamPlanet because I love it there
>>
>>14704703
Yeah, my personal limit is 1 per 2 HGs or 1 per MG.
>>
>>14704703

The thing is that I used to change them out every 2-3 kits, but now sometimes I have to change them out every single kit because sometimes the edge just rolls/bends like it's fucking nothing.
>>
>>14704710
Personally, it depends on how much time passes between kits for me. If I'm knocking them out back to back I can get three good builds out of a blade. If there's enough time between the kits for rust to set in, maybe 2 depending on how bad it is. If it's back-to-back MGs I change regardless after the second one.
>>
What the hell are you guys doing to rust your knife blades? They already come pre-oiled and unless you live in the rainforest it takes months for them to even show discoloration for me.

Seriously wtf are you guys doing?
>>
>>14704736
I live in Singapore which has 80-90% humidity.
>>
>>14704736
I build my kits in my basement (no humidity control), my xacto didn't come with a sheathe for the blade, and I tend to leave it laying out when I'm in the middle of a kit (3-4 days for a HG, over a week for a MG).
>>
>>14704701
>Left trigger hand
>What kits come with left trigger hands? I love me some dual-wielding.

>>

>>
So Bandai has been on a roll with the revive and Origin kits, did they hire new engineers or what?
>>
>>14704812
I would assume so. The Origin kits are fucking masterful.

However the lack of MGs makes me a sad boy.
>>
>>14704816

To be fair, the MGs they're putting out this year are two Thunderbolt ver. Kas which were likely very ambitious and expensive. They also put out that Hi-Res Barbatos, two RE1/100s and IBO 1/100s.

Next year there will probably be more MGs.

Is this supposed to be here? My airbrush is cooked and won't spray anything (air flows fine). I've taken it apart and cleaned it multiple times now and can't see any issues so I'm lost. This is all I could find but it might just be something I've never noticed while cleaning before.

Water just bubbles in the cup and it'll rarely splurt. Can't find anywhere where it could be clogged after cleaning it, even using a brush to see if I can find where there may be some dry paint but nothing shows up.

Have gone through many google suggestions but results stay the same. Am I just going to have to buy a new airbrush?
>>
>>14704786
I don't have access to any to compare now, but I'm pretty sure the backpack connectors are different.
>>
Fuck, guys, I really can't wait for winter this year.

I always hang out in my basement and have a show like Trailer Park Boys on while I'm building my gunpla. I'm wrapped in a blanket with the major source of heat being my space heater set so there's that balance of not too cold without the blanket, but it feels great under the blanket, along with the image of snow from tiny the basement window making me feel so much better.

God, winter is the best season for comfy gunpla building.

I think this thing is gonna be as close to done as it's gonna get. Would have only needed some touch up paint on the back mounted guns, but the freakin peg on the left side snapped off again. At least I managed to make the left hand more snug, and the wiring seems to hold up for the most part. Just need a good stand for this guy (suggestions would be appreciated), solder on some extension wires, and I'm just gonna close the door on this guy.

So what are you guys working on?
I'm trying to put LED's on my kits now, anyone have thoughts/tips for this one?
Anyone tried running their own LED's through HG before? I have Khashatria and two more regular jegans unbuilt and i want to LED them all alongside this Stark. Im messing with it right now. planning to make a diorama build, so if anyone has had experience with trying this, I'd appreciate it.
Sorry for the grainy photo, im sleepy and wanted to post this on here before i crashed for the night
>>
>>14704844
That sounds like some gay shit, anon, but gay shit I'd like to experience
>>
>>14704872
If you're gonna put LEDs in Kshatriya, you're gonna have to get some of those SMDLEDs for the thrusters, since those don't have much room to work with, unless you don't mind the wires showing out the back and the bulb sticking out. I did an LED for the mono eye, where the LED itself is in the torso and the light being fed upwards using fiber optics.
>>
>>14704872
Working on an RG sinanju.
Hopefully it's my last snapshit build.
That depends on how well my next build goes
>>
>>14704897
Thats a great recomendation for those surface LED, but im not quite confident in my soldering to get that fine work done on prepping them. I like your fiber optic cable idea though,
>>
>>14704921
It works well overall. Just make sure you have a small enough drill bit or knife to bore out the eye area. I went a step further and carved out a hole in the top portion of the black chest piece and put a clear red runner piece behind it so when the LED is on, it looks like the psychomu is active. Good luck on your end.

A true hero. I'm hyped for the Lupus and the new Graze and the Tekkadan units (especially since they revealed the option set gives you different faceplates for them) but I'm on the fence on the new G Rebake, having bought two of them the arm articulation is unexpectedly bad and something about him makes him clunkier than the barbie even without the backpack on.
I'm dead meat if runners and manuals show new and improved engineering for it, though.
>>
>>14705108
I had the 1/60 ingram a long time ago. the rubber cowling that went over some of the joints was stiff and a bitch to work with. Otherwise they're solid, if dated kits. Close in size to the taller CCA-era hguc kits

I'd like a helldiver or a brocken if I could get my hands on one.

What did you expect? I made "forms" that aren't official forms, like the Mars Duel and the Armor Purge "forms" that get very limited screen time. What can I say, I love me some Barbies. And the Lupin's still got that V-Fin I do so love. Not sure how I feel about the Type A/Gusion Re-Rebake, but we'll see when the gimmicks and the show produces a moving picture of it. New Graze looks ok, but I've built 6 of them (Crank's, 3 Ritters, Ryusei, and Ein) so I'm a little burnt out on them, but I'll probably buy them too, since I'm a slut for IBO kits.

There's probably gonna be a little more new engineering, since I saw some promo pics showing off the "complete" Inner Frame, and for a HG that's unheard of before IBO. So that might be another reason to get them?

In other news, I also finished his Graze yesterday, and the banner for it, so I got some fun looking shots of the Barbie and it in the episode 3 poses. Gonna dump the 4 images.

Nah, he's got a point. Weathering is supposed to looks layered, and grimy, not like Harambe's counter attack.

Maybe try dry brushing some Browns and blacks on raised corners, or adding a little more colors of the dirt spectrum to areas you think the kit would most likely impact things during every day use?
>>
>>14705301
At least your criticism is constructive. Thank you.

Bro no.
>>
>>14705308
Try something more along the lines of what happened on the model's right side of the v-fin. Those little lines, in moderation, can go a long way, and remember, less is more when it comes to weathering. Unless you're doing straight up bullet holes into the cockpit, or actual battle damage like a lost limb, weathering won't really give you too much all around.

Yeah I'm pretty hopeful given the new innerframe, but we'll see. I may fall victim to my weakness later and get the Rebake MkII no matter what just by virtue of how bulky and blocky it is. I know what you mean about Graze burnout though, I have a Ritter and Carta up, and I'm working on Ryusei now. I'm keeping good pace though all things considered- probably because I finished a Lightning Zeta and the difference in engineering was a breath of fresh air.
Think we'll be seeing some kind of Re-Grimgerde later? I'm sad we don't have more Valkyries yet.
Any plans to get the Astaroth/Origin?
Any chance of a group shot of the Barbies in Ginyu force/sentai poses?

Astaroth is actually the next kit on my to-do list. I bought the last 2 Barbies, Crank, and the Astaroth at Otakon (as well as a RG Qanta for my sister and me to make together for the Setsuna display, but we finished that already too), so I'm almost done with that backlog.

My girlfriend built a Nemo and is working on the F type Zaku (she wants to paint it but isn't sure what scheme to go. Pink and blue her favorites, or a more muted white like snow Camo) and I got her the Tieren Taozi for her birthday since her favorite color is pink, and she fell in love with it during our watch of 00.

I still have quite a bit of a backlog outside of that, so I'll prolly be holding off on buying anything until I finish more of my backlog. I really want the Hyaku Revive and the RG Sinanju for my Char collection tho.

I'm sure Chocochar will get a new suit, or at least a revamped Valkyrie. I mean those japs love their Char, so they're not gonna write him off as Durandel again.
Hmmm, maybe I'll lose a few like that when I get home. Right now they're just all lined up, but I could do that and the Weasley Family Photo I've been meaning to do!

I have potentially very dumb question regarding HLJ purchases
I ordered last month some plamo, one of them was Valsione which was listed as Sept Restock item, decided to check availability today, and it is discounted.
And being listed in my open orders as discounted.
That means that I'll never get it now? Or that it being processing as purchase atm?

Amazon has a thing where you can sign up to sell on Amazon and all it costs is 99 cents per sale unless you plan on signing up with Fulfilled by Amazon. It's pretty much the same as selling on ebay only I think you have more visibility on Amazon, but I'm not too sure about these things.

You can try selling on here too, throw up a list and post it for a couple days and you're sure to get some bites.

I'd sell it for a bit less than what HLJ wants, and would include some small things(maybe two HG weapons or some parts from one, a few polycaps too if wanted). Easiest would be going on there, adding it to stock and seeing how much it would cost in total.

What's that kit that everyone here shits on but you just love? The RG Zaku II is honestly one of my favorite even though everyone calls it a hand grenade. I haven't heard much to any bad talk about the RG Zaku. I built the Char, and it's pretty solid. The hoses were a bit tedious, but aside from the fingers, it's not a hand grenade. Now the GP01fb is, quite honestly, a hand grenade, and the Freedom with it's wing bits being held together with 1 micrometer of plastic are pretty hand grenadey, imo. The 00's and MK-II are solid, while the RX-78 is a bit flimsy in the shoulders and hands, but solid everywhere else. I hate he base connection tho. Worst base connection I've ever seen.

if its your first gunpla and you don't have model kit experience I'd suggest HG, since RGs have some unforgivingly small parts and while the 'technology' and quality of the kits is superior to HGs they aren't really noob friendly imo

HGs have much fewer parts and are way more forgiving for first timers, plus cheaper. I'd suggest HGs just to get your feet wet.
>>
>>14707046
They both have the same height anon 1/144. the difference is that RG has more pieces so start with HG if its your first time building one

How do I paint on cameras? Is it like silver as a base then clear color over it? Do I need to do the thing where you paint it black before spraying silver on it?
On MGs where it's clear plastic, can I just directly put clear paint on it without priming?
>>
>>14707046
>HG and RG?
RG is generally more detailed and complex (in terms of the amount of parts each kit has) than HG. Both are 1/144 scale, so it really just comes down to surface detail. HG is now the default grade for kits, they usually are of high quality minus lacking proper full coloration in most kits. So it's up to you - slightly more expensive but really good looking kit vs good looking and generally cheap kit

I'm new to Gunpla, but I have built some model kits in the past. and already have some tools - a side cutter, pair of tweezers, and hobby knife.

Do the RG kits for the Zaku/RX-78-2 have any problems besides the few I've read about in this thread?
>>
>>14707096
My first (only) RG was the Zaku 2 and its solid, my only complaint was the springs and rings for the pipes were fiddly to put together, and sometimes the skirt armor falls off if you move it around too much but it is a really solid kit and was a LOT of fun to build. RX-78-2 is always a good choice because I feel Bandai puts the most effort into what is essentially the flagship kit for them.

For transparent pieces, there's no real point painting them unless it's to change the colour, and even then the results aren't usually great because the paint is clear.
For painting cameras on regular parts, silver to reflect a bit of light, and then clear. Black base is for metallic surfaces to make them look more realistic

After some digging, probably the easiest way to do this would be to buy and ALPS printer, but they've been discontinued, and refurbished ones cost upwards of $400 depending on the model. Not to mention, according to wikipedia, they stopped making ink cartridges for it last year. Other options include Citizen's Printiva series (which also seems to be discontinued and not sold anywhere), and some oki printers (the C711WT being the cheapest as far as I can tell, which starts at $3395).
In short, good luck and hope you have a lot of money to spend.

How's the Thunderbolt Jim? I liked its design the most out of anything in December Sky, and I'd like to make a custom out of it.

From what I hear it's good but the sub-arms are a single unbending piece that I hear is quite delicate.

In my head, my collection is essentially a UC museum, with obviously zeek-sympathetic leanings and some oddities thrown in (IBO/Build fighters shit). Not having these regal suits that were honestly only propaganda pieces anyway in the roster just didn't seem right. Also, I got most of them fairly early in my gunpla madness, before I understood what things like "P-Bandai" and "snapbuilding" really meant. A lot of the MGs in that pile are being reserved for a time when I feel my skill is adequate to at least do them justice, if not pay exquisite tribute. Until then, many HGs and a few RGs have honed and continue to nurture the craft.

Also look up Oil Streaking techniques and look into mud/dirt effects and pigment powders.

And remember the golden rule of weathering.

"Less is More".

The more subtle the weathering, the nicer the overall appearance usually is. Weathering should make a good model look better, not distract from it and be all that you notice.

MGs Exia and 00 Raiser.

Everyone keeps going on about balance issues, shitty ankles and whatnot, but I've had none of those.
There's very stiff articulation in the torso for a reason. Play with that and the heavy weapons/backpack can be posed anyhow you like.
I've actually reposed several of them owned by other modellers, and they all say the same thing: center of gravity is too hard to visualize.

I like them so much, I've been hunting my holy grail kits for years (see pic).
I bought Trans-Am Raiser during a business trip to Japan last June (found it in a warehouse sale in Kodama), whereas Trans-Am Exia got a reprint in August and it just arrived recently.

If you buy something off HLJ and it says that it's Discontinued/Order Stop when you're looking at your warehouse then good job, you got it. The Order Stop is just there to say that you got lucky and managed to get one and that you can't order a second or third of that kit because they filled their order quota. Meanwhile if you order something but it's backordered, you're waiting until whenever they get it in stock.

tl;dr you're getting your Valsione Valsione R kit never ever

Still looks pretty good to me, but for future builds you should use grey panel lines on the white parts and also don't lay on the topcoat too thick and that way you shouldn't have trouble with the panel lines running. I'm not saying that the topcoat looks too thick in your picture though, I think it looks fine, I'm just speaking from personal experience that whenever I've laid the topcoat on too much my panel lines have ran.

Well if you want to finish your models with a matte finish then yeah you are fine. If you were looking for Primer (which I believe is the blue can) then you dun goofed.

If you are asking if the final coat using Mr Hobby Matte looks alright I personally think it looks pretty alright.
>>
>>14709559

>>
>>14709576

I mean you will get a finer spray with an airbrush but honestly I have used that exact same can on 1/144 scale stuff and it works just fine so long as you disassemble into arm legs torso etc, don't spray a total shitload on at once and then make sure you mask off or remove any clear parts you don't to become opaque and matte.
