Most anime communities outside of /m/ usually are the type of guys who love TTGL yet refuse to touch anything else because in their eyes it's not a mecha anime but instead an anime that happens to have mechs. ANN used to be an okay place until Psycho 101 become a mod, after that he went out of his was to bully anyone with an unpopular opinion under the guise of "spirit of the rules" even when they did nothing rude or even passive aggressive whatsoever. I also once saw him whine at someone right after another moderator did, butting into his job just to tell someone he hates off and deletes posts that were completely following the rules. He is single-handedly the reason I left ANN, I can put up with reviewers that fail at research and people that have no idea what they're talking about, not mods without oversight that are wrong for their position.

There's no ultimate mecha series because it's a whole genre.

People all love Dune, Star trek, Star Wars or Babylon 5 for very different reasons and mecha has quite a few string themes.
Good action is one, super heroism, romance, comedy, real war,...

Just find something you like the idea of and watch... or if you're simply in it for the giant robot action, you can simply ask for a list of popular series, more often than not, they will be just as easy to watch as Eva or TTGL.
