Digimon Adventure

Digimon adventure psp kinda plays the anime straight... well more or less anyway. The only difference is eventually you can unlock warp digivolve for all the chosen instead of just Tai and Matt.

As for the other seasons, I really enjoyed Savers and enjoyed the first two seasons of Xros Wars. If you have the cash, I'd look up Digimon Cyber sleuth as well, it's on PSvita though.

Savers doesn't really get a lot of attention but I gather it's pretty alright.

Xros Wars is absolutely stellar.

Xros Wars: Time Hunters is absolute garbage.

Tri is kind of fun so far.

As someone who follows this series too much here is a rundown of the franchise.

Adventure: holds up great and the subs really make you realize the dub utterly butchered a series with great drama

Adventure 02: we don't speak this evils name. Your nostalgia is wrong, 02 is unwatchable garbage.

Tamers: objectively the best show, what happens when you make a Digimon series directed by the director of lain l. Tons of suffering and fun is had, objectively a great show.

Frontier: Digimon Toku fun, until they reach Cherubimon in which the issuing becomes dog shit and the series drags hard. The climactic fights are pretty good and there's some good moments, but it can be a drag to watch.

Savers: probably the most fun show. Digimon mixed with MIB and involves a literal war of the worlds. This is the one where the MC punches Digimon.

Xros: amazing budget, turned Digimon into a mecha gattai series. The characters are eh and the story isn't amazing, feels the most aimed towards kids but still a fun watch.

Young Hunters: a time filler that literally tries to be Pokemon. If 02 didn't exist it would be there worst. It's shit.

Tri: movies are good so far but slow paced, die-hard fans get tons of fanservice and nods but movie 2 was mostly filler. Plot is kicking in hard by end of 2 and looks like most of 3.

Appmon: soft reboot side series coming out later this year. It's looks like it is gonna be Digimon's version of Rickman.exe.

I recently finished watching 02, and it just felt like a giant waste of time.

The 02 kids don't go through half the shit the Adventure kids went through, leaving them unable to measure up.

Any tension or urgency the show tries to build is severely undercut by the kids being able to come and go to the Digital World whenever they want.

02 is a mess doomed from the start, it was directed by someone who fame got to his head and was surrounded by yes men, the script was written by committee, it was an unneeded sequel, producers kept interfering (one literally have the order that Daisuke was not allowed to develop), and many more. The parallels between the star wars prequels and 02 are rather staggering.

Do you mean that in a "They're going to make the same mistakes" kind of way, or "this element was dumb so we're just pretending it didn't happen so our story works better" way? Either way I'll probably end up watching, already up to ep 10 of Frontier and it's been pretty decent.

So far they are ignoring/retconning a lot of 02 and are planning to explain away big chunks of it as the movies progress. Some degree of 02 seems to be no longer canon but we don't know how much, we do see Daisuke fucking die in a cryptic unexplained flash in the first movie tho.

They were implying getting people used to it but I guess that could be debated by interpretation, 02 did end with both worlds unified and every single person getting a partner though. "Being a chosen child isn't special at all!" Man 02 really set out to undermine Adventure and make the exploits of the original cast unimportant as possible.
