So I was looking at the VF-4 Lightning III and VA-1SS Metal Siren last night and noting how different they look from normal VFs, the fact the Lightning III has a triple fuselage, sounds like it has multiple engines and has mostly internal weapons while the Metal Siren has a 4th transformation a la Gerwalk (it's Gundroid mode) and turns it's nosecone in to a lance and kind of lament the fact they both seemed to radicalize VF development in some form, while subsequent VFs just seemed to make them better, not not different.

Those two kind of broke the "take a plane, make it a mech" mold too, while later VFs hewed more to that line. Which is a bit of a shame. I wish Kawamori had done more with that idea and made further VFs a better mold visually between Terran, Protoculture, Zentradi and whatever enemies tech too. I know they are internally, but they all look very Human, while the VF-4 looked a little foreign.

I'm also kind of curious about the VF4's engines. The entry on the Macross Mecha Manual (http://www.macross2.net/m3/flashback2012/vf-4.htm) mentions that it only accounts for turbine engine thrust when calculating thrust to weight so I'm just curious if the ramjets and dorsal rocket engines give it much thrust or contribute a lot to it's flight? I think it might be the only VF to have ramjets as well, which is a bit of a shame.

Minmay and Hikaru weren't going to end up together, though. The original ending was like in episode 27 without the additional Misa shipping scenes. their relationship was always meant to be Hikaru's unrequited love. It's even in the Ending song.

If you notice in following Macross, the Misa clones are always ending up with Captain or older pilot guys, following the original spirit. Frontier featured two pilot versions of Kaifuns and two Minmays. The problem seemed to have been botching Kaifun.

F has a few songs that are good but the majority of them are pretty bad. I think the good songs trick people into thinking more of Frontier's soundtrack is good than actually is the case.

Frontier was also good at using the songs in the episodes themselves. But when you listen to them outside of the episodes/movies they totally fall flat. Like people dicksuck songs like Niji-Iro Kuma Kuma but that song SUCKS.

Delta's music is not exactly high art but it's something that if it comes up on your playlist you can enjoy it, while Frontier's soundtrack has like 2-3 songs that are great and the rest you skip through.

Yeah she is obviously kill since she had a tidal wave of boiling water smash into her. If the impact didn't kill her she was probably cooked alive. I don't know what you're watching, but I doubt it's the same show.

SDF sets up colonization.
Plus sets up the first coloy and top of the line VFs as well as Ghosts and holographic concerts.
Macross 7 sets up the advanced colony ships, the crew uses the VFs from Plus, introduces musical energy (fold), holograhpic concert in D7.
Macross Frontier has Galaxy using Ghosts, NUNS investignating the fold-music relationship, holographic concerts, adds in fold quartz, idol gear like the holographic clothes or boosters as well as smaller warships, planet eaters.
Macross Delta uses the clothes/boosters, the fleet is fullly equipped with fold quartz, planet eater massacre, Elysium is a better smaller class Macross warship.

And that's not even starting with the many references of bands and events.

Also because if you put them in a jet they'd be useless for their original purpose of calming civilians and suppressing var incidents since their music doesn't carry through current technology (Protoculture seem to have solved that considering the range on Heinz's song) and they'd pass the couple of blocks Arad indicates is the song power's radius in episode one within a second or two at any kind of speed. They'd also be a lot more intimidating to the public since they'd be flying around in jets. Even if they put the VFs in gerwalk or battroid mode and moved at walking pace they'd have a lot less mobility than if they just moved around using gas jets and their own bodies, and that ability to move through streets and buildings, to kip around the place to help civilians on a human scale etc is more important than the speed or firepower advantage a VF would offer. Delta flies them to give a bird's eye view of events and take out overwhelming enemies, but they mostly operated as backup dancers and recon originally by the looks of things, along with being transportation.

The reasons for not adapting to them once it became clear that Windermere was the cause of Var, declared war on the galaxy and showed up to essentially every battle in person making it all about VF battles rather than civilians on foot needing help are less clear, but almost everything about Delta by that point is kind of boring and worthless in my opinion so I'll let someone else try to defend that part.

Probably because it takes time to train them into VF pilots.
Besides, if they were flying VFs, they'll be pretty big targets. On foot, they can take cover using their suroundings and more effectively reach and help civilians, with Delta flying cover for them and probably informing them where to go for the next Var victim as well. With their jetskirts, they are actually pretty mobile.

Walkure is supposed to be dealing with Var, and the people with Var might be in VFs or other robots.
With the hologram drones and such, they can put up holograms to distract the Var victims and prevent them from attacking other people/Walkure, but if they tried the same in a VF, chances are them being in a VF would probably be a bigger distraction than the holograms and might defeat the purpose of the holograms.
Then there's the part where Var victims are going to be on foot like half the time, they might be in a building, in an alley, or anywhere else unaccessable by a VF.

I don't hate it, but I do think it'd be nice to have a secondary character (like Max, Micheal or Chuck) using a Monster, a Destroid or something throughout a show rather than all of them always using VFs. I think it would have been especially simple in Delta since Chuck or some one could have been using a Monster made in to a transport or something to ferry Walkure around rather than the normal plane they do have. They still wouldn't get to do much, but it'd be nice to see all the same.

Canaria was a Monster pilot in Frontier, but she was a tertiary character at best and only showed up on occasion when they wanted to show off that all of SMS was doing something unlike Micheal, Luca, Klan etc. who were closer to Alto and any plot going on.

I can't say as I'm annoyed by it either, since Sheryl dying would have done nothing good for the show. Nor will Freyja. I don't like Freyja's character, but I expect her to survive and don't think her dying would add anything even if they did it.

Arad and Mikumo haven't even interacted much either, and certainly I wouldn't say their role as partners mattered at all. The only time it seemed to matter as a role was in episode one when she rode on his plane during the fight, and even then after episode one I'd have said that Mirage was her partner since she specifically was ditching Mirage to do under cover work. The partners thing just didn't seem at all important - another vestige of the original idea about school competitions I suppose, but rendered unimportant and essentially dropped in the final product.
