Besides, by technicality, SM is the only major series set within the 20th century. Alt., TE, the eventual Euro Front and TDA are post-2000, early 21st century.

How a character looks basically.

A good design is at once eye-catching and memorable, but doesn't stick out and matches the setting and tone of the story. A good design also characterizes, giving the audience a preview of what they'll be getting and enticing their interest. Well designed casts also tend to have a theme running through them, but it is often subtle enough where it won't be screamed in your face. Finally, a well designed cast will each look somewhat unique and match up what in cast members say about them. A semen demon that's in story known for their beauty will have traits to accentuate this and won't share the body or face of a loli or other more humdrum characters (a major problem in anime where the "beautiful" heroine has the same face as every other girl).

I agree. I don't get what /a/ sees in her. They're probably just being contrarian. Beatrix is easily the most evil and detestable character in all of Muv-Luv to me, and that's really saying something when we got guys like the Master and Axemann. A real piece of irredeemable shit, she's less human and more of a monster than the fucking BETA, so I was very pleased to see her die. Axemann may be a tool, but at least he's somewhat human.

Lise isn't that great of a character herself, but at least she has a reason for doing what she does. I still don't like her that much, but I can see why some people would sympathize with her. She's a victim at the end of the day, and before Beatrix and the stasi, she was a pretty nice, sweet girl. People who hate her really do it in vain.

People can't seem to get that the country's demise was guaranteed under stasi rule. The rebels offered a chance of survival, even if extremely slim. East Germany collapsing by the end of the year isn't a point damning them. If anything, the blame lay with the stasi for playing politics and continually shooting themselves in the foot to prolong their rule over the sheep even as the wolves danced among them. They milked and propagated the situation that lead to East Germany standing virtually alone and weakened against the BETA, all so that they could gain, and have absolute power for a year or two more. Beatrix is really just the worse of this murderous corruption. She was ultimately the one in control of Axmann, and likely the one who facilitated his rebellion all so she could use the coup to crown herself queen of East Germany. Okay. I like her, but I can agree to disagree. Part of the fun I find with her is that there are two Lise; her original self and the brainwashed Stasi Acolyte. Two characters in one, "Good" girl and "Bad" girl. I never liked how things turned out with Theo having to kill her for what wasn't her fault to begin with and would have preferred they found a way to recover her and put her skills to good use. Then again after what she went through her death is practically a mercy killing, so its almost a win/win but I'm glad theres a chance for her to be saved in the upcoming VN.

She's a good villain precisely because you want to see her destroyed. Every single breath she takes, act she does, or word she speaks just deepens your visceral hatred of her. She just oozes with malice. I was grinning ear from ear in episode 12 watching her squirm like a cockroach after Theo pinned to her seat.

Her design is also a nice contrast to her inner self. On the outside, her design is sultry, but on the inside, she has all the sensuousness of a vomit caked dead fetus. This mixture of sex appeal and repulsive personality isn't something you see to often in anime.

Ultimately, characters don't have to be deep or complex, they just have to fulfill their role and Beatrix fulfills it with flying colors. She's the love to hate character. Besides, we already have the sympathetic, nuanced, or pragmatic villain slot filled in by Lise and Heinze anyways.
