Forgetting the source material behind these game, were Battlecry and Invasion good games?

Battlecry is good, except for any Escort missions, but that's more to blame on the Escort mission format than anything
>>
Battlecry looks good for the time it came out and has some fun gameplay. It's all Sir-Not-Appearing-This-Anime characters too so it doesn't matter plot-wise.
>>
Battlecry was ass because it pretty much only takes place in the post-war arc. I wanted to fight the battles of Saturn and Mars, not the battles of shitty post apocalyptic Earth.

Battlecry is pretty good. People often complain how hard the game is, but as the other anon stated, its really just escort missions that can be a pain. In fact, there's only two that are hair-pulling aggravating: "Cat Scan" is the first dose, but as long as you know when to utilize your anti-air missile drops and keeping an eye out for Zentraedi fighters then its a walk in the park. The follow-up mission "Trial By Fire" on the other hand where you need to escort your recon plane in re-entry is just fucking awful. You're just speeding all over the place doing whatever you can to keep yourself and that goddamn recon plane alive.

The rest of the game is fun. Its got a nice balance on difficulty that makes you feel good when completing otherwise difficult missions, especially with collecting the reward metals.

Invasion was interesting and amusing. the story gets pretty fucked up as it goes along, but its New Generation, so anything taking place in this or the Masters arc is pretty much guaranteed to be screwy anyway. Its an otherwise decent FPS equipped with a lock-on system that requires some skill at aiming for precise and effective shots along with self-replenishing shields and ammunition that kind of make you feel like an enhanced super-soldier as you take on waves of aliens and rogue humans as you make your way across the hell-holed Earth landscape. Its gets relatively repetitive in places, but the game is super cheap to get a hold of, so the price is good for what it is.

I had the gameboy advanced game for this. At least, I think it was robotech, might've been macross. Came with a little figure, and was a fun game. I initially just got it for the cool mini robot figure.

I can agree with this.

Battlecry has some really good moments, mostly the opening arc focusing on the original Macross arc was really fun, and some of the later missions felt rather rewarding. Despite not watching Robotech, I generally got the idea of what was going on.

Now I am aware that Robotech took Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospedia to make up the next two storylines of Robotech, but what exactly went down during Invasion? So the Zentradi are just gone and this new group of Aliens called the Invid start invading? Also you character apparently gets turned into one later on in the story or something?

Robotech: Invasion is funny because its basically a Mospeada first person shooter. Silly considering how obscure Mospeada is. Too bad you can't fly the Legioss in it

Battlecry was great. Even in the relatively closed areas you could weave between buildings or through openings in background debris in fighter mode at top speed (my favorite stage for this was basically a big pit with an aircraft carrier at one end). Vs mode was a lot of fun, too.

Invasion was a decent FPS but kind of wasted the transformation because it was never really useful in any of the areas. You couldn't corner tight enough to circle enemies and there were trees everywhere so basically every time you transformed you had about two seconds of tree-dodging before you were on the other side of the area and had to transform back.

Honestly, though, the only thing that Battlecry had that Artdink's psp games don't have was the sniper mode and those missions were annoying as fuck to me. I'm not really a fan of FPS games, either. The only reason I liked Invasion was because I was a Robotech kid back in 86 and am still a Mospeada fan today. Without that nostalgia, it probably isn't anything special.

Here's the (relatively) short version:
The Zentradi and the SDF-1 were created by the aliens from Southern Cross (they stand in for the Protocultures). The SDF-1 had a secret stash of seeds of the Flower Of Life from Southern Cross hidden inside it.

The wreckage of the ship is buried after the ending of Macross, but during Southern Cross they investigate the burial site and find the flowers blooming. This is why the aliens in Southern Cross came to earth: to harvest this Flower Of Life. At the end of Southern Cross, the site is blown up when someone self-destructs a ship right over it in an attempt to destroy the flowers. This actually scatters the seeds all over earth.

In New Generation (when the Invasion game takes place) the Invid/Inbits come to earth to harvest this same Flower Of Life because it's originally native to their (now destroyed) homeworld and it's their only source of food. Also it won't grow anywhere else they've found except for Earth.
>you character apparently gets turned into one
The Invid are experimenting in evolutionary biology (this is actually their whole motive in the original MOSPEADA). In the series, the Regis/Refless evolves some of her drones into human form as an experiment, which she considers a failure because they develop individual minds and reject the collective will of the Inbits (i.e.: her will).

I enjoyed Battlecry. More robot games should do cel-shading.

The GBA game was okay. I poked at it on my GBA flash cart but I don't recall it doing much for me compared to, say, the SPD game. That worked better for me as a generic action license once removed from a moonfranchise.

Thanks for the information, I might actually take a look at Robotech one of these days. While it's three diffrent animes crudely spliced into one another, I am rather curious to see how they managed it.

Very little of Macross or Mospeada actually changed, story-wise. It's mostly just edited-for-TV things like omitting references to alcohol, hangovers, suicide, hallucinogenic cactus juice, that kind of thing. They added a narrator who supplies all the fluff that connects the three series, but nearly all of the original dialogue is unchanged.

For example:
In Robotech, the Flower Of Life is actually used to make the fuel source of the reactors in all the mecha. We are told this by the narrator, but none of the characters even know about it (military secret) so it doesn't alter the plot of Macross in any way. Ignore the narrator and it's just a PG dub.

Southern Cross got the most re-writing of the three. The original series takes place on an alien world that humans have recently colonized only to find out that it is the homeworld of a spacefaring race that no longer occupies their homeworld but still needs resources from it. In Robotech, it's Earth.

MOSPEADA is about the same as Macross in that most of the changes to dialogue were censorship and a few name-swaps. The troops from Mars Fleet and Jupiter Fleet are both referred to as being from "Admiral Hunter's Fleet", Yellow sings one of Minmay's songs, Annie's panties are referred to as "bikini bottoms", that kind of thing. The narrator again mentions things like the Invid needing the Flower Of Life to survive, using humans ass labor to farm the Flower, and so on. Scott/Stick may mention that one a time or two, but for the most part the original dialogue is fully intact. I own both the original and Robotech versions of all three shows and did a marathon of both versions side-by-side on two televisions to note exactly how much had changed from the original dialogue and it really isn't much aside from the narrator.

I do recommend watching it at least once, especially if you're already familiar with the originals, just to see how much the changes are over-exaggerated by those who haven't seen it.

It's managed very poorly. There's a reason why no one has tried doing this again.

Even if I know that the vast majority of people prefers Battlecry I still prefer the inferior 2001 PS2 Macross game, JP only, even if it's actually easier.

that's nice too

The best for me is how they built up that insane Meltrandi bitch in the Queadluun-Rau. She is introduced in the third level as a final boss that you cannot defeat, to which you can only bring her health down halfway as she nearly tears you to pieces and decides to spare you so you can fight her again. By the second time in the middle of the game she just goes all-out as you fight with her in this gigantic sink-hole with city debris everywhere. At first I had such a hard time getting past this point, but eventually I finally got a strategy down and just love how awesome this fight is: Even when I'm at my best she still manages to dwindle my health meter down below the half-way mark, and sometimes I come close to dying. You have to utilize all three of your modes with quick reaction timing. Your racing at her headlong in fighter mode with gunpod blasts and missiles (gunpod is more powerful in fighter mode for some reason), shooting her up in strafed free-fall in battloid mode to dodge most of her wrist vulkans, racing around her and using guardian mode to hide behind solid cover to recharge your arsenal, and then using fighter mode again to gain distance while she is blowing up debris all around you and mocking you. I get some awesome Macross Plus feels out of this.

VF-X2 is pretty great, as long as you remember to enable forward view for that one mission near the end where you're inside the enemy ship. If you don't, you're stuck looking in the direction of the nearest enemy.
