Is this OVA any good? I watched the first of 4 episodes. It seems to rely heavily on tropes, but the animation is pretty and fluid, and the mech designs are interesting. Does it get better?

Which now I notice that it's pretty much what you said so all I can say is that if I sat through all 4 eps then at least it was consistent.

No. It's a cool premise poorly executed. The robot designs are cool, but every battle comes down the MC doing his one OP attack that isn't even very visually interesting.

Mostly cause of the action and the amazing art/production values.
Story is pretty decent, even if the ending is pretty abrupt

Even if you don't like it much, it's only 4 episodes so you can't say you wasted too much of your time.
For me, I think it's fine for what it is.
