Probably. The story is really not very good, but that's a constant in the Macross universe. On the other hand it has great worldbuilding and mecha designs as well as godly Mikimoto character designs.

Someone said during his panel at AX 2016 he claimed people can consider it canon if they want or somesuch.

I personally was not there and cannot find an online source to verify this, but that's what I heard from someone who was at the con when the subject came up to him.

At the very least, he apparently doesn't truly hate it. He just wasn't involved.

While I don't know if he's ever said as such, he DID kind of blur that line when he chose to lift music from MII to slip into scenes from Macross 7.

Then again, Kawamori's rule of whether or not something counts mostly seems to boil down to 'is it convenient to what I want to do at this time? If yes, I'LL ALLOW IT!' so best not to try and read too much into any of it one way or another.

Eh. It's not so much bad as it is criminally average. The production values are fine, the story is rushed, but no worse than the standard of OVAs for the time period, and the mech designs are actually pretty good, if nothing spectacular.

It's a pretty forgettable OVA overall that mainly just gets treated worse than that because 'NOT MUH MACROSS'.
Taken on its own, it's more another on the long list of mid-level shelf-warmers to come out of the OVA boom.

It's fine, everyone on here hated Frontier when it was airing too.

My only major complaint is one of the characters we all expected to be awesome ended up being something of a wet blanket, and the mid-season finale was followed up by a bunch of really boring info-dump episodes that killed the show's momentum.

However last week's episode was pretty decent, and I'm hoping it'll pull a strong finale out of it's ass like Frontier did.

I liked it. I genuinely consider it one of the better entries in the franchise.

And let's be honest: Macross II did help keep the franchise relevant and float it some 8 years after DYRL came out.

The first cour was great, the second cour is weak but still not a disaster. It's nowhere near as bad as Gargantia, Valvrave or G-Reco. Overall it's still better than most mecha series of the last years.
