I can imagine the series would be pure crap to watch as it released, though.

Fuck, over a quarter of a year would go on before you'd get to the first episode with actual story.
Binging on it, however, it's perfectly fine and there's also the fact that both Frontier and Delta made extra sure it fit into the universe proper (unlike, G Gundam, its Sunrise competitor at the time) helps a lot.

I used to think that the music was awkwardly forced into Frontier until I watched Delta, and bow I have a much higher opinion of Frontier. That show is a masterpiece elegantly weaving in music compared to Delta.
