This looks much more fun than the SNES game to me. Are there actual crippling gameplay flaws or is it just "muh nostalgia" that makes people say it's bad?

This is the remake of the Sega Genesis game, called Assault Suit Leynos (JP) or Target Earth (US). The Saturn game is Leynos 2.

For whoever played the original, those are the differences:

- Separate buttons for Shield and Lock Firing Angle
- You can now punch enemies
- You can dash forward, and there's a small invincibility window at the start
- Controls on the zero-gravity stages are tighter
- Arcade Mode has a checkpoint system
- Classic Mode tries to remake the original stages, but mostly falls flat. This just means you'll see 12 enemies running after you all firing at once (there was a sprite limit in the original game)
- Shield is infinite in Arcade, finite in Classic
- Not all enemies from the original game appear on Arcade, only on Classic
- Some stages were remade: stage 2 now has you escort a convoy of transports (the original was a transport and some Assault Suits), and stage 7 now has a big section inside the colony that pays homage to stage 1 of Assault Suits Valken
- Some bosses in Arcade Mode have bullet hell patterns
- New final boss
- Fight against Zarter is different, more akin to a puzzle (it sucks)
- You don't automatically get the HG Gun before stage 8 anymore

About the story:
- You can save the guy who originally died on Stage 3, his name is Zousaly
- Lance has a female underling called Arseria
- New final boss, it's an automated system (not a new character or anything)

Has the best "collectables" out of any retro remake though, not a real collectable since you have it since the start though.
You get a shitton of art design sketches and game design sketch with levels layouts and notes, the problem is that due to them being direct scans they're in Japanese.
I can only hope they do the same for Valken, Urushihara' goodness must not go to waste.
